Hardcover. New York, George Braziller, 1st, 1987, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 44 pages of watercolors. Beautiful large sketchbook illustrating the works of the great Maurice Prendegrast. In association with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where the Lehman Prendegrast collection resides. As new in original slipcase. Half white cloth binding over black leatherette boards. This sketchbook, kept primarily between 1895 and 1897, is an exquisite example of the working technique of a great American artist. In it, Prendergast experiments with pattern, shadow, and foliage, using the beautiful Boston Public Garden as his studio. The 88 pages of watercolors, pen and ink, and pencil drawings focus on the colorfully dressed women and children in the park, with glimpses of Victorian Boston outside. The sketchbook reproduced here in facsimile and handsomely boxed recalls his years of study in Paris, yet foreshadows his bold mature style.
Hardcover. San Diego, Thunder Bay Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 144 pages illustrated in color. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHORS on the half-title page. Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century. In the early 1920s, when his works Garden of Allah and Daybreak were reproduced as art prints, he quickly became one of the best known artists in America with his art images appearing on posters, calendars, magazine covers, and book illustrations. His unmistakable paintings, characterized by "Parrish Blue" water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and exquisite young women in flowing classical robes, are infused with a romantic Eden-like quality so entrancing that reproductions are as enthusiastically received today as the prints were when they first appeared. A wonderful selection of his work with brilliant reproductions. Clean copy.
Hardcover. San Francisco, Pomegranate, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 164 pages. It was estimated in the 1920s that one out of four homes in America had one of Parrish's make-believe illustrations on the wall, and he remains one of our best-loved illustrators. This unique work, a celebration of "Parrish Blue" water and skies, hued hills, and young women draped in classical garments, is the result of a 1995 traveling exhibit, "Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective." The Cutlers, he an architect and she a gallery owner, were instrumental in working with the Parrish Family Trust to put together that international exhibit to commemorate the artist's 125th birthday. The Cutlers were able to locate numerous items in private collections for the exhibit. Many of the 130 color plates are of these works, never reproduced before, while better-known pieces are lavishly reproduced from the original paintings rather than prints. The Parrish family offered rare photos for the biographical text, which is supplemented with a reminiscence by granddaughter Joanna Maxfield Parrish.

When the French designer Christian Dior presented his first collection in Paris in 1947, he changed fashion forever. Dior's "New Look" created a striking, romantic vision of femininity, luxury, and grace, making him-and his last name-famous overnight. One woman informed Dior's vision more than any other: his sister, Catherine, a Resistance fighter, concentration camp survivor, and cultivator of rose gardens who inspired Dior's most beloved fragrance, Miss Dior. Yet the story of Catherine's remarkable life-so different from her famous brother's-has never been told, until now. Drawing on the Dior archives and extensive research, Justine Picardie's Miss Dior is the long-overdue restoration of Catherine Dior's life. The siblings' stories are profoundly intertwined: in Occupied France, as Christian honed his couture skills, Catherine dedicated herself to the Resistance, ultimately being captured by the Gestapo and sent to Ravensbruck, the only Nazi camp solely for women. Seeking to trace Catherine's story as well as her influence on her brother, Picardie traveled to the significant places of Catherine's life, including Les Rhumbs, the Dior family villa with its magnificent gardens; the House of Dior in Paris; and La Colle Noire, Christian's chateau that he bequeathed to his sister. The riveting biography of comedian, director, actor and writer Elaine May, one of America's greatest comic geniuses. May began her career as one-half of the legendary comedy team known as Nichols and May, the duo that revolutionized the comedy sketch. After performing their Broadway smash An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Elaine set out on her own. She toiled unsuccessfully on Broadway for a while, but then headed to Hollywood where she became the director of A New Leaf, The Heartbreak Kid, Mikey and Nicky, and the legendary Ishtar. She was hired as a script doctor on countless films like Heaven Can Wait, Reds, Tootsie, and The Birdcage. In 2019, she returned to Broadway where she won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in The Waverly Gallery. Besides her considerable talent, May is well known for her reclusiveness. On one of the albums she made with Mike Nichols, her bio is this: "Miss May does not exist." Until now. Carrie Courogen has uncovered the Elaine May who does exist. Conducting countless interviews, she has filled in the blanks May has forcibly kept blank for years, creating a fascinating portrait of the way women were mistreated and held back in Hollywood. Miss May Does Not Exist is a remarkable love story about a prickly genius who was never easy to work with, not always easy to love and frequently often punished for those things, despite revolutionizing the way we think about comedy, acting, and what a film or play can be. Softcover. Damiani , 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 124 pages. In 2008, Christopher Niquet, a well-known French stylist, spotted the 1960s supermodel Peggy Moffit in a Beverly Hills restaurant. Never an autograph chaser, he nonetheless felt compelled to ask for hers. This candid moment ignited an obsessive, ongoing quest. Niquet began to reach out to the models he considered quintessential figures in his industry, for their epic beauty and remote auras. Deploying a sleuth's methods to locate these models around the globe, he collected 100 signatures, most of which are framed along with an iconic portrait. "My original purpose was to get beyond the abstract, incorporeal beauty of these icons, and bring back a sense of their physicality. For me, each signature restored a womanly reality to the imaginary being." This book highlights the unique personalities of celebrated or forgotten women from the late 1950s to the 1990s and what they all have in common: the power to awaken creativity in the people who see them. Through generations of cover stories, Models That Matter explores a multi-layered history of feminine beauty, from Jean Shrimpton to Jerry Hall, from Lauren Bacall to Linda Evangelista, from Anita Pallenberg to Naomi Campbell, muses for extraordinary fashion lensmen like Steven Meisel-who wrote the preface-to Irving Penn or Richard Avedon. Softcover. NY, Columbia University Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 264 pages, b&w illustrations. The first book to chart responses in the Muslim Middle East to modernity through an examination of the evolution of the Baha'i faith--a millenarian movement led by the nineteenth-century Iranian prophet Baha'u'llah ("the Glory of God"). This volume illuminates the complexity and ambiguity that characterized the changing relationship of Baha'u'llah and his followers to modernity, considered as a transnational and fluid political and cultural field of contestation. The insights presented here into these responses to modernity illuminate not only the genesis of a new world-religion but also important facets of Middle Eastern-particularly Iranian-social and cultural shifts in the nineteenth century. Drawing on the work of Habermas, Giddens, Touraine and Bryan Turner, among others, Juan R. I. Cole considers some of the ways in which Middle Eastern society was affected by five developments central to modernity: the lessening entanglement of the state with religion, the move from absolutism to democracy, the rise of sovereign nation-states, the advent of nationalism, and the women's movement. This biography disclosed for the first time one of the strangest love stories of the Victorian age, as recorded one of the most remarkable private diaries of the 19th century. During his lifetime Munby was known as a versifier of small but distinctive talents, a barrister concerned primarily with ecclesiastical affairs, and a fashionable bachelor about town. At his death in 1910, Munby bequeathed to Trinity College, Cambridge three deed boxes full of diaries and personal documents. It is largely on the contents of these boxes that this biography is based. For Munby had a lifelong obsession with the whole sub world of female manual workers - colliery women, fishergirls, milkwomen, acrobats- women whose company he furtively pursued, whose photographs he avidly collected, and one of whom, a char woman called Hannah, he secretly married & kept as his unacknowledged wife for a quarter of a century.
