Hardcover. New Castle DE, Oak Knoll, 1st, 2004, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is a full and exceptionally well-researched account of the Press. It begins with a brief survey of Lucien Pissarro's early career in France in order to establish the influences and motivations for his book designs and proceeds to examine Lucien's association with Charles Ricketts, the establishment of the Eragny Press, and the Press' relationship to the publishers Hacon & Ricketts. Eragny was not a commercial publisher, yet profits was an important motivation for the Pissarros. Included here is the first major account for a private press of the costs of production, profits, and marketing and distribution practices. Eragny Press books were promoted and sold in England, the Continent, and the United States. Two of the Eragny Press books were the results of commissions from French bibliophile clubs. This history of the Eragny Press includes a discussion of the influences and artistic theories that are the basis for the Pissarros' books and provides a critical reassessment of their significance within the history of the English Arts and Crafts Private Press movement. About half the book is devoted to an exhaustive and detailed bibliography of all the Eragny Press publications, with critical commentary on each. Accompanying the text and the descriptive bibliography are more than seventy-five reproductions of rare Eragny wood engravings ( by Lucien Pissarro, T. Sturge Moore, and others), title pages, borders and decorated initials, binding papers, and book covers. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is an important book for anyone interested in the history of printing, the Arts and Crafts movement, Impressionism, private presses, the art of wood engraving, and illustrated and fine books.

Alison Jackson has photographed the Queen of England on the toilet, George Bush and Tony Blair chatting in the sauna, Mick Jagger doing gymnastics, and Monica Lewinsky lighting Bill Clinton's cigar. Or has she? The likenesses are uncanny, but of course, her subjects are look-alikes. Her photos demonstrate that while seeing is believing, the truth is another story entirely. In her work, Jackson says, "Likeness becomes real and fantasy touches on the believable. The viewer is suspended in disbelief. I try to highlight the psychological relationship between what we see and what we imagine. This is bound up in our need to look--our voyeurism--and our need to believe." Indeed, by showing "celebrities" ostensibly caught unawares, Jackson's pictures show us what we imagine might go on behind closed doors. Jackson's work causes controversy, because it threatens to cross the line between the private and public life of our contemporary icons. Because we unquestioningly accept the authenticity of the photograph, it would appear that we are being given a glimpse of something confidential, a private moment. It is only upon closer examination that we question the reality of the image, and hopefully this makes us question our unwitting tendency to believe everything we see in the media today.
Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art , 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 304 pages. Roger Fenton (1819-1869) was England's most celebrated and influential photographer during the 1850s, the "golden age" of this radically new medium. Fenton's majestic pictures of cathedrals, country houses, and varied countryside were without peer in England--as were his views of the royal castles and Houses of Parliament that embodied Britain's power. But Fenton's choice of subjects ranged more widely still: he was among the first to photograph the Kremlin and other landmarks of Moscow and Kiev; he was commissioned in 1855 to document the Crimean War, producing early war photographs; and he created theatrical Orientalist costume pictures and a startling series of lush still lifes. Fenton had first studied law and painting, but soon after he took up the camera he was making photographs that were technically superb and highly original in their handling of composition, perspective, atmosphere, and light. Always he strove to demonstrate that photography could equal the art of painting and even surpass it. He was the force behind the founding of the Photographic Society (later the Royal Photographic Society), which worked to advance the profession and encouraged the exhibition of members' works throughout Britain. In a career of a single decade, Fenton did much to transform photography into a medium of powerful expression and visual delight. This exquisitely produced book--the first comprehensive publication on Fenton in almost twenty years--presents eighty-five of the artist's finest photographs and discusses every aspect of his work and his remarkable career.

For years, designers, educators, and community administrators have clamored for a book that will highlight the problems with contemporary playgrounds, tender sorely needed strategies with which to redress them, and stimulate national debate about today's crisis of undervalued public space. Susan Solomon's groundbreaking and marvelously illustrated American Playgrounds is that book. Since the 1970s, Solomon maintains, American playgrounds have degenerated into irrelevance as cultural artifacts and educational tools. Imbedded in Solomon's text is a frank indictment of American attitudes that are stunted by a heavy-handed emphasis on safety that limits the nature of play and the vitality of places for public assembly. During the past decade an elite few American architects, landscape architects, and sculptors, including Stanley Saitowitz, Walter Hood, and Mary Miss, have pioneered the restoration of aesthetic and developmental values to play areas for young people. Solomon appraises these success stories and proposes fresh and urgent remedies that blend excellent design principles, innovative planning, and affordability-a vision for the future of the playground in America. Supplementing her impeccable command of primary and secondary sources with hundreds of hours of interviews with designers and clients, the author confronts a seriously under-developed topic with powerful and complex arguments rich in social history, law, theories of play and childhood, and urbanism. Readers will be inspired-and equipped-to take up the gauntlet of advocacy for superior American playgrounds. Clean copy.

Even before she emerged from the cot in her nursery Beatrix Potter was up against it. With her prodigious memory she recalled being placed under the tyranny of a cross old nurse who introduced her to witches, fairies and the creed of the terrible John Calvin. More sadness followed. She had no siblings of her own age and was brought up virtually in isolation. She was afflicted by two most unpleasant illnesses one of which has not previously been recognized - and she found herself often at odds with her mother. She also had a love affair that ended tragically.

Lucian Freud's paintings are instantly recognizable: often shocking and disturbing, his portraits convey a profound yet compelling sense of discomfort. Freud was twice married and the father of at least a dozen children, and his numerous relationships with women were the subject of much gossip-but the man himself remained a mystery. An intensely private individual (during his lifetime he prevented two planned biographies from being published), Freud's life, as well as his art, invites questions that have had no answer-until now.In Breakfast with Lucian, Geordie Greig, one of a few close friends who regularly had breakfast with the painter during the last years of his life, tells an insider's account-accessible, engaging, revealing-of one of the twentieth century's most fascinating, enigmatic, and controversial artists. Greig, who has studied his subject's work at length, unravels the tangled thread of a life lived on Freud's own uncompromising terms. Based on private conversations in which Freud held forth on everything from first love to gambling debts to the paintings of Velazquez, and informed by interviews with friends, lovers, and some of the artist's children who have never before spoken publicly about their relationships with the painter, this is a deeply personal memoir that is illuminated by a keen appreciation of Freud's art.
