Endless Novelties of Extraordinary Interest: The Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger and the Birth of Modern Oceanography
by: Macdougall, Doug

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A gripping tale of exploration aboard H.M.S. Challenger, an expedition that laid the foundations for modern oceanography. From late 1872 to 1876, H.M.S. Challenger explored the world's oceans. Conducting deep sea soundings, dredging the ocean floor, recording temperatures, observing weather, and collecting biological samples, the expedition laid the foundations for modern oceanography. Following the ship's naturalists and their discoveries, earth scientist Doug Macdougall engagingly tells a story of Victorian-era adventure and ties these early explorations to the growth of modern scientific fields. In this lively story of discovery, hardship, and humor, Macdougall examines the work of the expedition's scientists, especially the naturalist Henry Moseley, who rigorously categorized the flora and fauna of the islands the ship visited, and the legacy of John Murray, considered the father of modern oceanography. Macdougall explores not just the expedition itself but also the iconic place that H.M.S. Challenger has achieved in the annals of ocean exploration and science.

Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany
by: Charles Portis/Jay Jennings (Editor)

Hardcover. Little Rock AK, Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 358 pages. For those who care about literature or simply love a good laugh (or both), Charles Portis has long been one of America's most admired novelists. His 1968 novel True Grit is fixed in the contemporary canon, and four more have been hailed as comic masterpieces. Now, for the first time, his other writings--journalism, travel stories, short fiction, memoir, and even a play--have been brought together in Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany, his first new book in more than twenty years. All the familiar Portis elements are here: picaresque adventures, deadpan humor, an expert eye for detail and keen ear for the spoken word, and encounters with oddball characters both real and imagined. The collection encompasses the breadth of his fifty-year writing career, from his gripping reportage of the civil rights movement for the New York Herald Tribune to a comic short story about the demise of journalism in the 21st century. New to even the most ardent fan is his three-act play, Delray's New Moon, performed onstage in 1996 and published here for the first time.

Even the Rhinos Were Nymphos: Best Nonfiction
by: Friedman, Bruce Jay

Hardcover. Chicago, University Of Chicago Press, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 236 pages. A butler school in Houston, a livestock auction in Little Rock, a home for "frozen guys" in California, JFK's humidor in Manhattan--all are jumping off points for Friedman's baleful and sharply satirical scrutiny of American life and behavior in the second half of the twentieth century. Travel with Friedman from Harlem to Hollywood, from Port-au-Prince to Etta's Eat Shop in Chicago. In these pieces, which were published in literary and mass-circulation magazines from the 1960s to the 1990s, you'll meet such luminaries as Castro and Clinton, Natalie Wood and Clint Eastwood, and even Friedman's friends Irwin Shaw, Nelson Algren, and Mario Puzo. Friedman is a master of the essay, whether the subject is crime reporting ("Lessons of the Street"), Hollywood shenanigans ("My Life among the Stars"), or his outrageous adventures as the editor of pulp magazines (the classic "Even the Rhinos Were Nymphos"). We could sing his praises as a journalist, humorist, and social critic. But, as Buckley tells us, being Bruce Jay Friedman is enough. Clean copy.

Faith, Hope and Love
by: Mark Holborn and Edward Powis Jones

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 124 pages. Faith, Hope and Love, the first comprehensive examination of the life's work of Edward Powis Jones, details a remarkable artistic journey that begins as an accomplished American painter living in Paris in the shadow of the Second World War and concludes as that of an exceptional and surprising photographer whose work has no precedent. Jones employed all the disparate art mediums of his era and produced a life's work that is startlingly cohesive. After developing a passion for printmaking, he produced sculptures in bronze, wax, plaster, and papier-mache. By the time of his death in New York in 1998, Jones had been treating photographic emulsion as painter's gesso for more than a decade and had become fascinated by the potential of the photocopier. His enormous artistic output springs both from an abiding affection for his family and from a deep sense of loss, with roots in the early death of his parents. Beneath the surface of his work lies something disconcerting, if not menacing. Jones' conversion to Catholicism is reflected in etchings of the Stations of the Cross and paintings depicting the Crucifixion. Yet despite the focus on mortality, especially his own, his work also displays great joy and humor.

Fearless Fosdick: The Hole Story
by: Capp, Al

Softcover. Kitchen Sink Press, 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages. "Fearless Fosdick", a ruthless parody of Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy", was one of Al Capp's many brilliant creations within his comic strip masterpiece "Li'l Abner". It was also one of the funniest things ever to appear in the funny pages. Fosdick, a skinny, hatchet-jawed detective who is frequently riddled with enormous bullet holes (hence the title of this book), is the ideal of Abner Yokum and every red-blooded American boy, and stars in their favorite comic strip, within the "Abner" strip itself. Fosdick endures a world of corruption and his seventeen-year engagement to the beastly Prudence Pimpleton in order to slaughter members of the criminal underword for twenty-two-fifty a week. This handsome paperback from Capp's faithful re-publisher Denis Kitchen picks up where an earlier volume left off, collecting a handful of Fosdick stories (and one about Fosdick's fictional creator, Lester Gooch) from the late fifties and early sixties, as well as a few of Fosdick's "Wildroot Cream Oil" ads from the period. Dave Shreiner's commentary is, as always, insightful and intelligent.

Feather Trails: A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds
by: Osborn, Sophie A. H.

Hardcover. White River Junction VT, Chelsea Green Publishing , 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 367 pages. In Feather Trails, wildlife biologist and birder Sophie A. H. Osborn reveals how the harmful environmental choices we've made--including pesticide use, the introduction of invasive species, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction--have decimated Peregrine Falcons, Hawaiian Crows, and California Condors. In the Rocky Mountains, the cloud forests of Hawaii, and the Grand Canyon, Sophie and her colleagues work day-to-day to try to reintroduce these birds to the wild, even when it seems that the odds are steeply stacked against their survival. With humor and suspense, Feather Trails introduces us to the fascinating behaviors and unique personalities of Sophie's avian charges and shows that what endangers them ultimately threatens all life on our planet.
