The Hello Girls: America's First Women Soldiers
by: Cobbs, Elizabeth

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, 3rd pr., 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 370 pages with index. Photographs, illustrations, notes, index. "This is the story of how America's first women soldiers helped win World War I, earned the vote, and fought the U.S. Army. In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France. They were masters of the latest technology: the telephone switchboard. General John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary forces, demanded female 'wire experts' when he discovered that inexperienced doughboys were unable to keep him connected with troops under fire. Without communications for even an hour, the army would collapse". Clean copy.

1001 Nights
by: Nielsen, Kay, Editor: Daniel, Noel

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 142 pages. In the late 1910s, in a Europe ravaged by World War I, Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen put the finishing touches on his illustrations of A Thousand and One Nights. The results are considered masterpieces of early 20th-century illustration: bursting with sumptuous colors of deep blues, reds, and gold leaf, and evoking all the magic of this legendary collection of Indo-Persian and Arabic folktales, compiled between the 8th and 13th centuries. However, publishers retreated from Nielsen's project in the financially strapped postwar climate, and the publication never happened. A rising star, Nielsen moved on to other work. This world heritage classic's spectacular pen, ink, and watercolor images remained under lock and key for 40 years. Published just once in the 1970s, the illustrations were rescued from oblivion after Nielsen's death in 1957 and are now held by the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in two private collections. This publication is a unique compilation of fine art prints and stunning illustrations reproduced directly from Nielsen's original watercolors--the only complete set of his extraordinary drawings to have survived. The book features descriptions of all of the images and three generously illustrated essays on the making of this series, the origin of Nielsen's unique imagery, and a history of the tales. In addition, it shows many unpublished or rarely seen artworks by Nielsen and intricate black-and-white drawings Nielsen created for the original publication. Text in English, German and French. Hardcover. Milwaukee OR, Dark Horse Books, 3rd pr., 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, oblong pictorial boards, 88 pages in color. Writer-artist Frank Miller and colorist Lynn Varley retell the battle of Thermopylae in the exciting and moving graphic novel 300. Miller and Varley's art is terrific, as always; the combat scenes are especially powerful. The armies of Persia--a vast horde greater than any the world has ever known--are poised to crush Greece, an island of reason and freedom in a sea of madness and tyranny. A BLOODY BUSINESS
by: Dylan Struzan

Hardcover. London, Hard Case Crime, 1st , 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, colorful dust jacket with a retro-style illustration by the author. In 1919, the National Prohibition Act was passed, making it illegal across America to produce, distribute, or sell liquor. With this act, the U.S. Congress also created organized crime as we know it. Italian, Jewish, and Irish mobs sprang up to supply the suddenly illegal commodity to the millions of people still eager to drink it. Men like Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, Dutch Schultz and Bugsy Siegel, Al Capone in Chicago and Nucky Johnson in Atlantic City, waged a brutal war for power in the streets and on the waterfronts. But if you think you already know this story...think again, since you've never seen it through the eyes of one the mobsters who lived it. Called "one of the most significant organized crime figures in the United States" by the U.S. District Attorney, Vincent "Jimmy Blue Eyes" Alo was just 15 years old when Prohibition became law. Over the next decade, Alo would work side by side with Lansky and Luciano as they navigated the brutal underworld of bootlegging, thievery and murder. Alo's later career included prison time and the ultimate Mob tribute: being immortalized as "Johnny Ola" in The Godfather, Part II. Introduced to the 91-year-old Alo living in retirement in Florida, Dylan Struzan based this book on more than 50 hours of recorded testimony--stories Alo had never shared, and that he forbid her to publish until "after I'm gone." Alo died, peacefully, two months short of his 97th birthday. And now his stories--bracing and violent, full of intrigue and betrayal, hunger and hubris--can finally be told. With cover art and 24 interior illustrations by Drew Struzan, one of the most acclaimed movie poster painters of all time. Small remainder dot bottom edge, otherwise like new.

A Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services with Their Names Ages and Places of Residence... Under the Act for Taking the Sixth Census
by: State U.

Hardcover. Baltimore MD, Genealogical Publishing Company, reprint, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, red cloth with gilt lettering. 582 pages - 2 books bound as 1. The body of this consolidated work is a list of 25,000 Revolutionary War pensioners still living in 1840, with their ages and the names of the heads of families with whom they were residing. Based upon the returns of the Sixth Census of the U.S., the arrangement is by state or territory, thereunder by county, and in the case of some counties, by minor subdivision. Thus a good deal about the origins of settlers of each county of the United States, as well as the magnitude of migration into the various areas of the country, can be gleaned from an examination of this work. The Census of Pensioners is here reprinted with the typescript index to the work prepared by the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1965. Clean copy.

A Century of Revolution: Insurgent and Counterinsurgent Violence during Latin Americas Long Cold War
by: Joseph, Gilbert M./Grandin, Greg

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st pbk, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 443 pages. Latin America experienced an epochal cycle of revolutionary upheavals and insurgencies during the twentieth century, from the Mexican Revolution of 1910 through the mobilizations and terror in Central America, the Southern Cone, and the Andes during the 1970s and 1980s. In his introduction to A Century of Revolution, Greg Grandin argues that the dynamics of political violence and terror in Latin America are so recognizable in their enforcement of domination, their generation and maintenance of social exclusion, and their propulsion of historical change, that historians have tended to take them for granted, leaving unexamined important questions regarding their form and meaning. The essays in this groundbreaking collection take up these questions, providing a sociologically and historically nuanced view of the ideological hardening and accelerated polarization that marked Latin America's twentieth century. A City in the Republic : Antebellum New York and the Origins of Machine Politics
by: Bridges, Amy

Hardcover. NY, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket, 210 pages. Provides an account of politics in New York City between the election of Andrew Jackson and the outbreak of the Civil War. Parts of this story are familiar: the Workingmen's Parties and the "Jacksonian revolution," the "ferment of reform" of the 1840s, mass immigration and the Know-Nothing movement, the collapse of the second American party system and the birth of the Republican Party. As in cities and states across the union, local politics in New York bore the imprint of national events. At the same time, New York and other antebellum cities witnessed a distinctively urban political reordering that involved changes in party, government, and ideology. Some pencil marking to about 30 pages at front. Name on front fly leaf.

Sulky races at the Mercer County Fair, church suppers, sorghum making, shooting marbles in the school yard, housing tobacco, loafing at the courthouse-here are 129 beautifully reproduced images of who we were as Kentuckians not so long ago-during the Depression and the early years of World War II.
