Ferruccio Vitale: Landscape Architect of the Country Place Eraby: Schnadelbach, R. Terry

Ferruccio Vitale: Landscape Architect of the Country Place Era
by: Schnadelbach, R. Terry

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 326 pages, illustrated with b&w photographs, several color plates and architectural drawings by Vitale. Foreword by Horace Havemeyer III. Ferruccio Vitale is America's forgotten landscape architect. Though his works like Skylands and Longwood Gardens are well known, his name has been eclipsed by his contemporary, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Yet Vitale's influence on the modern direction of landscape design and his promotion of it as a profession is arguably more significant than Olmsted's. His unique designs and philosophy, which challenged the then-dominant pictorial mode of landscape architecture, influenced generations of followers, and is still felt today. Vitale (1875-1933) developed his rationale designs, based on the principles of composition from the fine arts and architecture, in both civic commissions and, most notably, at the country estates of captains of industry and finance. He introduced an idealized and abstracted type of formal design that created beautiful spaces, structured large sites, and reflected informal and relaxed plant compositions. Ferruccio Vitale tours over 40 of his masterworks, photographed by some of the best landscape photographers of the time, including Samuel Gottscho. It recounts the compelling story of a life in the early twentieth century, influenced by immigrant dreams, social clubs, and professional connections, and its culmination in some of the greatest landscapes of the 20th century.

Fighting for the Farm: Rural America Transformedby: Jane Adams (Ed.)

Fighting for the Farm: Rural America Transformed
by: Jane Adams (Ed.)

Softcover. Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Press, reprint, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 338 pages. In North America industrial agriculture has now virtually displaced diversified family farming. The prevailing system depends heavily on labor supplied by migrants and immigrants, and its reliance on monoculture raises environmental concerns. In this book Jane Adams and contributors--anthropologists and political scientists among them--analyze the political dynamics that have transformed agriculture in the United States and Canada since the 1920s. The contributors demonstrate that people become politically active in arenas that range from the state to public discourse to relations between growers and their contractors or laborers, and that politics is a process that is intimately local as well as global. The farm financial crisis of the 1980s precipitated rapid consolidation of farms and a sharp decline in rural populations. It brought new actors into the political process, including organic farmers and environmentalists. Fighting for the Farm: Rural America Transformed considers the politics of farm policy and the consequences of the increasing alignment of agricultural interests with the global economy. The first section of the book places North American agriculture in the context of the world system; the second, a series of case studies, examines the foundations of current U.S. policy; subsequent sections deal with the political implications for daily life and the politics of the environment.

Fights, The by: Hoff, Charles/Richard Ford

Fights, The
by: Hoff, Charles/Richard Ford

Hardcover. San Francisco , Chronicle Books , 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 127 pages. Hardcover. Extensive b&w photography throughout. Illustrated frontispiece. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Hoff's skill as a photographer is shown plainly throughout this book. He was known for using very little film, which increases an objective appreciation of his skill; he understood boxing and could anticipate moments of significance and arrange them to create technically superb photographs, without making dozens of pictures. The boxers depicted in this volume are now historical figures, but so are these photographs, of which Hoff is perhaps the best example. Live television coverage has changed the nature of boxing photography irrecoverably since the days when Hoff was photographing the sport. This volume is important as a historical document, then, from two angles - firstly as a record of what many perceive as the golden age of boxing, but also as an archive of amazing photography skills which are now impossible for photographers to learn, let alone master. A must for fans of both serious photography and boxing.

Fill'er Up!: The Great American Gas Station
by: Tim Russell

Hardcover. St. Paul MN, Voyageur Press, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 208 pages. The days of full service gas stations are a thing of the past, but it will never be forgotten in the minds of many petroliana enthusiasts. Catchy slogans, architecture and color schemes of the station itself, incentives and giveaways, stamps, and clever advertising from the first few decades of the twentieth century until today's fully stocked convenience stores are covered in this book. The highly detailed text also offers a glimpse of what was happening to the gas stations in Europe and serves wonderfully as a comparison with the gas stations in North America at the time. Vintage photography and advertisements provide a wonderful visual trip back in time to the days of being greeted by a smiling attendant every time you pulled into the gas station. Clenn copy.

Final Victory: FDR's Extraordinary World War II Presidential Campaignby: Stanley Weintraub

Final Victory: FDR's Extraordinary World War II Presidential Campaign
by: Stanley Weintraub

Hardcover. NY, Da Capo Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. When the wartime 1944 presidential election campaign geared up late that spring, Franklin D. Roosevelt had already occupied the White House years longer than any other president. Sensing likely weakness, the Republicans mounted an energetic and expensive campaign, hitting hard at FDR's liberal domestic policies and the war's ongoing cost. Despite gravely deteriorating health, FDR and his feisty running mate, the unexpected Harry Truman, campaigned vigorously against young governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York and old-line Ohio governor John Bricker. Roosevelt's charm and wit, as well as the military successes in Europe and the Pacific, contributed to his sweeping electoral victory. But the hard-fought campaign would soon take its toll on America's only four-term president. Preeminent historian and biographer Stanley Weintraub recaptures FDR's striking "last campaign" and the year's momentous events, from the rainy city streets where Roosevelt, his legs paralyzed by polio since 1922, rode in an open car, to the battlefronts where the commander-in-chief's forces were closing in on Hitler and Hirohito.

Fire Lookouts: The Early Years by: Kemnow, La Vaughn Vanderburg

Fire Lookouts: The Early Years
by: Kemnow, La Vaughn Vanderburg

Softcover. MountAinsWest Publishing, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, green pictorial wraps, 193 pages with b&w photos. The early years in the development of the fire lookout system were fraught with difficult decisions, hard work, and danger. Roads and trails had to be built, materials had to be transported. Building materials and supplies were carried up steep, treacherous mountainsides on the backs of horses, mules, and men. Primitive conditions were met with courage, grit, and determination. The people who built, and the people who staffed these lookouts were often exposed to extremes in weather: heat, blizzards, wind, and lightning. Occasional accidents and illnesses were to be expected and sometimes had tragic consequences. The earliest lookouts consisted of the top of a tree; an alidade mounted on a crude support or on a tripod; or simply a mountain top where an observer scanned the surrounding countryside with a powerful field glass, always on the alert for the slighted wisp of smoke. The historical information in this volume is the culmination of many years of research of original documents by Ron Kemnow. Also included are many historical photographs. Some of the older photographs and picture postcards are of poor quality, but were included for their historical value. This book is not in narrative form, but is a collection of official reports, letters, and news articles, presented as they were originally written.

Hardcover. Baltimore, The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket. 374 pages, b&w photos. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. "At the dawn of the nineteenth century, Saratoga Springs hosted no more than a thousand hardy travelers yearly, Newport floundered in the midst of a fifty-year commercial decline, and Coney Island's beach resembled a wind-swept wilderness. A hundred years later, the number of summer visitors to Saratoga had increased a hundredfold, the antics of high society at Newport transfixed America, and at least five million pleasure seekers visited Coney annually. 'Those who talk of the mushroom growth of our Western cities,' declared an astounded writer for Harper's Weekly in 1878, 'might better spend their wonder and enthusiasm upon our Eastern watering-place.'" -- From the Introduction. Fifty-nine illustrations enliven Sterngass's unique study of the commodification of pleasure that occurred as capitalist values flourished, travel grew more accessible, and leisure time became democratized.

Fitzgerald: Geography of a Revolution by: Bunge, William, Foreword: Heynen, Nik, Foreword: Barnes, Trevor

Fitzgerald: Geography of a Revolution
by: Bunge, William, Foreword: Heynen, Nik, Foreword: Barnes, Trevor

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Schenkman Publishing Company, 1st, 1971, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, oblong format, black cloth with white lettering on spine. 247 pages, b&w photographic illustrations, color folding map tipped-in at front pastedown, rear pictorial endpaper. This on-the-ground study of one square mile in Detroit was written in collaboration with neighborhood residents, many of whom were involved with the famous Detroit Geographical Expedition and Institute. This work, at its core, is dedicated to understanding global phenomena through the intensive study of a small, local place. Beginning with an 1816 encounter between the Ojibwa population and the neighborhood's first surveyor, William Bunge examines the racialized imposition of local landscapes over the course of European American settlement. By 1967 the neighborhood was mostly African American; Black Power was ascendant; and Detroit would experience a major riot. Immersed in the daily life of the area, Bunge encouraged residents to tell their stories and to think about local politics in spatial terms. His desire to undertake a different sort of geography led him to create a work that was nothing like a typical work of social science. The jumble of text, maps, and images makes it a particularly urgent book and a major theoretical contribution to urban geography that is also a startling evocation of street-level Detroit during a turbulent era. Clean copy, no dust jacket.

Flemish Painting, from the 16th to the 18th Century: Relaying Ideas from Erasmus to Diderot
by: Voldere. Florence De & Maxime Hennequet (Contributor) & Daphne Dorel (

Hardcover. Turin, Umberto Allemandi & Co., Revised Ed., 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 320 pages, Illustrated throughout in color. Real 'honest men', the Brueghels took part in the intellectual epic of their day which, from humanism to the spirit of the Enlightenment, brought about a renewal in thought and laid the foundations of Modernity. Through the human adventure of the Brueghel dynasty, progressing from obscure beginnings to recognition by the very greatest, Florence de Voldere introduces us to the genius of these men who created the Flemish aesthetic identity. Voldere takes us through the Renaissance in Flanders in the form of a story in pictures. Through this approach based on a dynamic reading of the paintings, this book shows the crucial role of art at one moment of civilization, and opens up some decidedly novel perspectives for interpreting Flemish art. Clean, like new. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
