Victor Regnault and the Advance of Photography: The Art of Avoiding Errorsby: Dahlberg, Laurie

Victor Regnault and the Advance of Photography: The Art of Avoiding Errors
by: Dahlberg, Laurie

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. This lavishly illustrated book establishes the towering influence of the scientist Victor Regnault (1810-1878) in the earliest decades of photography, a period of experimentation ripe with artistic, commercial, and scientific possibility. Regnault has a double significance to the early history of photography, as the first leader of the Societe Francaise de Photographie (S.F.P.) and as the maker of more than two hundred calotype (paper negative) portraits and landscapes. His photographic and scientific careers intersected a third field with his appointment in 1852 as director of the Sevres porcelain works. Readers are treated to Regnault's own beguiling pastoral, garden, and forest scenes; striking portraits of the scientists and artists in his circle of friends; quirky images of acoustic experiments; and an insider's view of the Sevres porcelain works. Regnault's richly varied photographs also encompass perhaps the most extensive group of family portraits in early photography, and his romanticized landscapes reflect a moment when the rural outskirts of Paris were being aggressively suburbanized and industrialized.

Victorian News And Newspapersby: Brown, Lucy

Victorian News And Newspapers
by: Brown, Lucy

Hardcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, 1st, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 394 pages includes index. This is a study of the gathering and presentation of news in late 19th-century England, a time when the vote was given to a large section of the working class, when public interest in the British Empire was on the rise, and when technology enabled newspapers to be produced more cheaply, distributed more quickly, and read more widely than ever before. Using manuscript collections and newspaper archives, the author describes the production and readership of newspapers, and the journalists within the industry--how they were recruited, the organization of their work, the ways in which they acquired their information, and their access to people in positions of power. The book moves on to review changes in news presentation in the last decades of Victorian England until the appearance of such papers as the Daily Mail in the 1890s. Clean copy, like new.

Vindications of the reasonableness of Christianity. Edited with introductions, notes, and critical apparatus by Victor Nuovoby: John Locke

Vindications of the reasonableness of Christianity. Edited with introductions, notes, and critical apparatus by Victor Nuovo
by: John Locke

Softcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, reprint, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 400 pages. Clean, bright copy. This volume makes available for the first time critical editions of John Locke's A Vindication and A Second Vindication of the Reasonableness of Christianity, in which Locke defends his interpretation of the New Testament and of the Christian Religion against charges of heterodoxy. These works contribute greatly to our understanding of Locke's Christian commitments, which it is now recognized played an important role in shaping his philosophical opinions; they also demonstrate his sophistication as a biblical scholar, and the breadth of his theological learning. The texts are accompanied by a historical introduction explaining the origin of the works and setting them in context. In addition to a textual introduction and critical apparatus, editorial notes help to clarify the text. The volume also includes a French translation and abridgment by Pierre Coste, a Huguenot scholar, who was patronized by Locke and worked on his translations while residing in Locke's household. This definitive edition is an important contribution to an understanding of the development of modern enlightened Christian attitudes.

Virtue Transformed: Political Argument in England, 1688-1740by: Burtt, Shelley

Virtue Transformed: Political Argument in England, 1688-1740
by: Burtt, Shelley

Hardcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 182 pages. This book offers a detailed study of political argument in early eighteenth-century England, a time in which the politics of virtue were vigorously pursued - and just as vigorously challenged. In tracing the emergence of a privately orientated conception of civic virtue from the period's public discourse, this book not only challenges the received notions of the fortunes of virtue in the early modern era but provides a promising critical perspective on the question of what sort of politics of virtue is possible or desirable today. Visible Saints: The History of a Puritan Idea
by: Morgan, Edmund S.

Hardcover. NY, New York University Press, 2nd pr., 1972, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, orange cloth covers, gilt lettering on spine, 159 pages. While Morgan's literary portfolio shows remarkable diversity, it is studded with works on Puritanism. 'Visible Saints' further solidifies his reputation as a leading authority on this subject. An expanded version of his Anson G. Phelps Lectures of 1962 (presented at New York University), this slender volume focuses on the central issue of church membership. Morgan posits and develops a revisionary main thesis: the practice of basing membership upon a declaration of experiencing saving grace, or 'conversion,' was first put into effect not in England, Holland, or Plymouth, as is commonly related, but in Massachusetts Bay Colony by non-separating Puritans. Characterized by stylistic grace and exegetic finesse, 'Visible Saints' is another scholarly milestone in the 'Millerian Age' of Puritan historiography. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.
