Seeing Mexico Photographed: The Work of Horne, Casasola, Modotti, and Alvarez Bravo
by: Leonard Folgarait

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. This engrossing book presents the photographs of four historically engaged artists and explains what they reveal about the highly dramatic revolutionary and post-revolutionary period in Mexico from 1910 to 1935. The works of these photographers--American Walter H. Horne, Italian Tina Modotti, and Mexicans Agustin Victor Casasola and Manuel Alvarez Bravo--are discussed not just as windows onto events but as artworks that offer both objective reporting and stylized expression. The twenty-five years covered in the book encompass some of the most convulsive developments in Mexico, from the violence and cataclysmic changes wrought by the Mexican Revolution to the immense struggles to forge a new nation and a new government. During this period, the work of the four photographers--two primarily documentary, one propagandistic, and one artistic and personal--enabled Mexicans to understand the forces that had brought their nation to armed conflict and social transformation.

Selected Philosophical Papers of Robert Boyle
by: Boyle, Robert, Editor: Stewart, M. A.

Softcover. Indianapolis, Hackett Publishing, 2nd pr., 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 256 pages. "The availability of a paperback version of Boyle's philosophical writings selected by M. A. Stewart will be a real service to teachers, students, and scholars with seventeenth-century interests. The editor has shown excellent judgment in bringing together many of the most important works and printing them, for the most part, in unabridged form. The texts have been edited responsibly with emphasis on readability. . . . Of special interest in connection with Locke and with the reception of Descarte's Corpuscularianism, to students of the Scientific Revolution and of the history of mechanical philosophy, and to those interested in the relations among science, philosophy, and religion. In fact, given the imperfections in and unavailability of the eighteenth-century editions of Boyle's works, this collection will benefit a wide variety of seventeenth-century scholars."

Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan (SIGNED COPY)by: Elizabeth A. Burns; Stanley B. Burns

Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan (SIGNED COPY)
by: Elizabeth A. Burns; Stanley B. Burns

Softcover. NY, Burns Archive Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 106 pages, color plates throughout. SIGNED/INSCRIBED BY STANLEY BURNS on the title page. Japan, an island nation isolated until the mid-nineteenth century, opened its doors to foreign photographers in the 1860s. These photographers presented a visual cultural kaleidoscope of Japanese life to an eager outside world. The 160 photographs in this volume are curated from tourist albums and presented in the typical sequence. The modern reader will experience Meiji Japan in the way of a nineteenth century armchair traveler. While photographers in other countries were marketing sepia-toned prints, photographers in Japan took advantage of local artists and had their prints exquisitely painted. As with all hand-rendered artworks, quality varied; many photographs were executed so well as to challenge modern color photography. Photographers were limited by government restrictions and many scenes were set in studios rather than in real life. Despite the limitations, tourists visiting the country could purchase albums filled with colorful renditions of Japan's peoples and places. The carefully staged and approved photographs promoted an idealized and romanticized vision of Meiji Japan. Modernization and industrialization changed the country dramatically and the last vestiges of the disappearing feudal culture are captured by the camera. These intriguing photographs are beautiful multi-media artworks representing a vanished world. Clean copy.

Sex Press: The Sexual Revolution in the Underground Press, 1963-1979
by: Vincent Berniere and Mariel Primois

Softcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 240 pages. From 1965 to 1975, an array of journals, magazines, fanzines, and underground presses were the voice of a dramatic sexual revolution. In Europe and the United States, this "sex press" consisted of publications such as Other Scenes, Yellow Dog, Actuel, Suck, The Body, and Screw--some of which were fully dedicated to sex, while others also engaged with the time's most riveting topical issues, including politics, human rights, war, women's rights, and gay and lesbian rights. Showcasing art from the most revolutionary publications of the era, the book traces the exuberant sexual liberation of the 1960s and then moves into the mid-1970s, with its more codified form of pornography. Illustrated by a vivid collection of full-page facsimiles, Sex Press offers a compelling visual tour through an extraordinary period of experimentation, creativity, and sexual freedom.

by: Gleijeses, Piero

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 430 pages, b&w illustrations. The most thorough account yet available of a revolution that saw the first true agrarian reform in Central America, this book is also a penetrating analysis of the tragic destruction of that revolution. In no other Central American country was U.S. intervention so decisive and so ruinous, charges Piero Gleijeses. Yet he shows that the intervention can be blamed on no single "convenient villain." "Extensively researched and written with conviction and passion, this study analyzes the history and downfall of what seems in retrospect to have been Guatemala's best government, the short-lived regime of Jacobo Arbenz, overthrown in 1954, by a CIA-orchestrated coup." Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Sheying: Shades of China 1850-1900by: Worswick, Clark

Sheying: Shades of China 1850-1900
by: Worswick, Clark

Hardcover. China, Turner Photo, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 171 pages. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. Duotone vintage photographs throughout, bibliography. The Quing Dynasty, which spanned three centuries, from 1644 to 1911, was the last ruling dynasty of China. Before the collapse of the empire ended 2,000 years of Imperialism and ushered in a time of political and economic strife, artists and artisans turned out rich paintings, porcelain plates, vases and photographs--the last having arrived in the country in the 1840s. This publication presents a key selection of photographs of the Southern Chinese coast taken by both Chinese and European photographers. It touches on the cultural exchange between the Chinese and those Western photographers who began to explore the country, like Milton M. Miller, William Saunders and John Thomson. Miller, during a short period in the 1860s, set up a photo studio in Hong Kong and introduced portraiture in the formal Western style of the time to the Chinese upper-middle classes.
