Geisha: A Photographic History, 1872-1912by: Stanley B. Burns/ Elizabeth A. Burns

Geisha: A Photographic History, 1872-1912
by: Stanley B. Burns/ Elizabeth A. Burns

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 119 pages. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY STANLEY BURNS on the title page. Japanese geisha and courtesans intrigue and fascinate Westerners. During the mid-nineteenth century, Japan opened its doors to the world and became an essential destination for travelers. Tourists desired images of landscapes and traditional Japanese culture, which Japanese photographers provided. They created souvenir albums consisting of hand-colored photographs individually chosen by the tourist. Many are so beautifully painted that they challenge modern sensibilities familiar with color photography. The photographic conventions were inspired by the aesthetics of the noted colored woodblock print medium of ukiyo-e and the privately published surimono. These works depicted the "floating world"--courtesans, geisha, and entertainments--which also were intriguing subject matter for tourists. The beautiful, large photos in this volume give a special insight into the old world of geisha. Clean copy.

Genealogical Data from Colonial New York Newspapers: A Consolidation of Articles from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record by: Kenneth Scott (Compiler)

Genealogical Data from Colonial New York Newspapers: A Consolidation of Articles from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record
by: Kenneth Scott (Compiler)

Softcover. Baltimore, Clearfield, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, light gray wrappers, 278 pages. This volume consists of abstracts of genealogical data from four of New York's earliest newspapers--the New-York Gazette (1726-1744) and the New-York Weekly Journal (1733-1751), the two earliest city papers, and the New-York Mercury and the Weekly Mercury (1752-1783). These newspapers were originally produced as weeklies and usually consisted of four pages, with occasional supplementary issues. Their subject matter encompassed essays, treatises, parliamentary proceedings, governors' messages, European and West Indian news, shipping news, incidents culled from other newspapers, and many advertisements. In this volume of abstracts may be found items yielding information concerning marriage, birth, death, age, status, place of residence, and place of origin, covering, in all, the years 1726 through most of 1783. Treatment is not confined to New York, for among individuals mentioned are those from all the other colonies, especially New Jersey (which had no newspaper in the colonial period), New England, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

Genealogies of Barbados Families: From Caribbeana and the Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Societyby: James C. Branow

Genealogies of Barbados Families: From Caribbeana and the Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society
by: James C. Branow

Hardcover. Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, black cloth with gilt lettering, 733 pages. Many of the early settlers of Barbados eventually moved to the mainland of North America and settled in Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas, and other colonies. Records of Barbados families exist in a variety of places and indeed a great many have been written up and published in the turn-of-the-century journal "Caribbeana" and "The Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society". Unfortunately, back issues of these journals are no longer available, and copies can be found today in only a handful of libraries. With this present work, however, genealogists at last have access to both of these publications, for the book contains every article pertaining to family history ever published in these journals. The combined articles, reprinted here in facsimile, range from conventional genealogies and pedigrees to will abstracts and Bible records and refer to some 15,000 persons, all of whom are listed in the index. Besides the genealogies and family records, this compilation also contains a selection of notes on the connections between Barbados and New England families and four invaluable lists of Barbados Quakers.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: The Phenomenology of Spirit by: Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Fredrich / Terry Pinkard (Ed.)

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: The Phenomenology of Spirit
by: Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Fredrich / Terry Pinkard (Ed.)

Softcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st pbk, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 492 pages. Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) is one of the most influential texts in the history of modern philosophy. In it, Hegel proposed an arresting and novel picture of the relation of mind to world and of people to each other. Like Kant before him, Hegel offered up a systematic account of the nature of knowledge, the influence of society and history on claims to knowledge, and the social character of human agency itself. A bold new understanding of what, after Hegel, came to be called 'subjectivity' arose from this work, and it was instrumental in the formation of later philosophies, such as existentialism, Marxism, and American pragmatism, each of which reacted to Hegel's radical claims in different ways. This edition offers a new translation, an introduction, and glossaries to assist readers' understanding of this central text, and will be essential for scholars and students of Hegel. Clean copy.

George Inness in Italy
by: Mitchell, Mark D.

Softcover. US, Yale University Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 60 pages. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. A canonical figure in American painting, George Inness (1825-1894) is widely admired as the pioneer of the landscape aesthetic known as Tonalism, which is distinguished by soft focus and diaphanous layers of paint. This is the first book about the artist's two Italian sojourns (1851-52 and 1870-74) and their formative impact on his work. Italy--its art and its landscape--offered Inness a font of inspiration as he developed his unique artistic vision. This handsome book presents ten oil paintings surveying Inness's Italian subjects dating from 1850 to 1879, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art's recently restored Twilight on the Campagna, which has not been on view since 1952. This was the first of Inness's works completed in Italy, and its reemergence offers a unique opportunity to reconsider the career of a leading American artist.

George Marshall: A Biographyby: Debi Unger / Irwin Unger /Stanley Hirshson

George Marshall: A Biography
by: Debi Unger / Irwin Unger /Stanley Hirshson

Hardcover. NY, Harper, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. A major historical biography of George C. Marshall--the general who ran the U.S. campaign during the Second World War, the Secretary of State who oversaw the successful rebuilding of post-war Europe, and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize--and the first to offer a complete picture of his life. While Eisenhower Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, MacArthur, Nimitz, and Leahy waged battles in Europe and the Pacific, one military leader actually ran World War II for America, overseeing personnel and logistics: Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1945, George C. Marshall. This interpretive biography of George C. Marshall follows his life from his childhood in Western Pennsylvania and his military training at the Virginia Military Institute to his role during and after World War II and his death in 1959 at the age of seventy-eight. It brings to light the virtuous historical role models who inspired him, including George Washington and Robert E. Lee, and his relationships with the Washington political establishment, military brass, and foreign leaders, from Harry Truman to Chiang Kai-shek. It explores Marshall's successes and failures during World War II, and his contributions through two critical years of the emerging Cold War--including the transformative Marshall Plan, which saved Western Europe from Soviet domination, and the failed attempt to unite China's nationalists and communists.

Hardcover. Richmond, Va., Candela Books, 1st, 2010, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, 100 pages. Hardcover. Extensive b&w photography throughout. Tipped in plate on front cover. Small stain to front cover, otherwise clean, tight copy. Working primarily from the 1940s through the early 1960s, the American photographer Gita Lenz (1910-2011) made documents of New York street life that won her early recognition and inclusion in two group shows curated by Edward Steichen for The Museum of Modern Art, a three-person show at the Brooklyn Museum and numerous articles and features in photography magazines of the time. Equally given to inflecting her portraiture with hints of social realism one on hand, and surrealism on the other, and also influenced by her close friend Aaron Siskind, Lenz produced abstract compositions, city still lifes, surreal still lifes and intimate portraits. She receded from view in the 1960s as financial demands impeded her practice, but in 2002, a chance meeting with photographer Gordon Stettinius led to the retrieval of this small but charming body of work, and the publication of this superbly printed first monograph.

Hardcover. London, Routledge, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 198 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Focusing on the house and museum and its considerable collections of architectural fragments, models, drawings folios and publications, this book is about thirteen Lincoln's Inn Fields in London, England, built in the early 1800s by the renowned eighteenth-century architect Sir John Soane. The book maps the influences, references, connections, extensions, and productions at play in Soane's house-museum. The house, still a public museum, was highly original in its period, and it continues to influence and impress architects and historians alike. Today's visitor is confronted by a dense, complex series of spaces, a strange aCCU1mulation of rooms, objects and effects. This book examines the ways in which Soane enlisted light, shadow, color, fiction and narrative, vistas, spatial complexity, the fragment, and the mirror to produce a spectacular space. God in the Age of Science?: A Critique of Religious Reasonby: Philipse, Herman

God in the Age of Science?: A Critique of Religious Reason
by: Philipse, Herman

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. God in the Age of Science? is a critical examination of strategies for the philosophical defence of religious belief. The main options may be presented as the end nodes of a decision tree for religious believers. The faithful can interpret a creedal statement (e.g. "God exists") either as a truth claim, or otherwise. If it is a truth claim, they can either be warranted to endorse it without evidence, or not. Finally, if evidence is needed, should its evidential support be assessed by the same logical criteria that we use in evaluating evidence in science, or not? Each of these options has been defended by prominent analytic philosophers of religion. In part I Herman Philipse assesses these options and argues that the most promising for believers who want to be justified in accepting their creed in our scientific age is the Bayesian cumulative case strategy developed by Richard Swinburne. Parts II and III are devoted to an in-depth analysis of this case for theism. Using a "strategy of subsidiary arguments," Philipse concludes (1) that theism cannot be stated meaningfully; (2) that if theism were meaningful, it would have no predictive power concerning existing evidence, so that Bayesian arguments cannot get started; and (3) that if the Bayesian cumulative case strategy did work, one should conclude that atheism is more probable than theism. Philipse provides a careful, rigorous, and original critique of theism in the world today. Clean copy.
