Xenophanes of Colophon; Fragments. a Text and Translation with a Commentary By J. H. Lesher by: Lesher, J. H.

Xenophanes of Colophon; Fragments. a Text and Translation with a Commentary By J. H. Lesher
by: Lesher, J. H.

Softcover. Toronto, University of Toronto Press, 1st pbk, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 264 pages. Xenophanes of Colophon was a philosophical poet who lived in various cities of the ancient Greek world during the late sixth and early fifth centuries BC. In this book, James Lesher presents the Greek texts of all the surviving fragments of Xenophanes' teachings, with an original English translation on facing pages, along with detailed notes and commentaries and a series of essays on the philosophical questions generated by Xenophanes' remarks. Also included are English translations of all the ancient testimonia relating to Xenophanes' life and teachings, and a discussion of how many of the testimonia pose the impediments to achieving a consistent interpretation of his philosophy. The Xenophanes who emerges in this account fully warrants classification as a philosophical thinker: moral critic and reflective student of nature, critic of popular religious belief and practice, and perhaps the first to challenge claims to knowledge about divine matters and the basic forces at work in nature. As with earlier works in the Pheonix series, this volume aims to make an important portion of Presocratic writing accessible to all those interested in ancient philosophy and the first phase of European natural science. This paperback edition contains an updated bibliography. Clean copy.

The translations are accompanied by contextual introductions and explanatory notes, and a general introduction assesses the importance of Posidonius and his contribution. Kidd in Posidonius Vol. 1 and completes (with Vol. 2 The Commentary) what has become the definitive modern edition. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise, clean.

Limits of Political Theory, The: Oakeshott's Philosophy of Civil Association by: McIntyre, Kenneth B.

Limits of Political Theory, The: Oakeshott's Philosophy of Civil Association
by: McIntyre, Kenneth B.

Hardcover. UK, Imprint Academic, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 208 pages. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. This book examines Oakeshott's political philosophy within the context of his more general conception of philosophical understanding. The book stresses the underlying continuity of his major writings on the subject and takes seriously the implications of understanding the world in terms of modality. The book suggests strongly that Oakeshott's philosophy of political activity cannot be reduced to a branch of conservatism, liberalism, or postmodernism or a theory or set of doctrines which fit neatly into any conventional school, like that of Idealism or Skepticism. Rather, Oakeshott's philosophy of political activity is a provocation to all of the currently dominant schools of political theory and political practice. It questions their presuppositions and exposes as ambiguous, arbitrary, or confused all of the supposed certainties which they take for granted. It does all this by offering profound insights into the character and limits of both political activity and political theory in the modern world.

Christ and Horrors: The Coherence of Christology by: Adams, Marilyn McCord

Christ and Horrors: The Coherence of Christology
by: Adams, Marilyn McCord

Softcover. Cambridge, UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 331 pages including index. Who would the Saviour have to be, what would the Saviour have to do to rescue human beings from the meaning-destroying experiences of their lives? This book offers a systematic Christology that is at once biblical and philosophical. Starting with human radical vulnerability to horrors such as permanent pain, sadistic abuse or genocide, it develops what must be true about Christ if He is the horror-defeater who ultimately resolves all the problems affecting the human condition and Divine-human relations. Distinctive elements of Marilyn McCord Adams' study are her defence of the two-natures theory, of Christ as Inner Teacher and a functional partner in human flourishing, and her arguments in favour of literal bodily resurrection (Christ's and ours) and of a strong doctrine of corporeal Eucharistic presence. The book concludes that Christ is the One in Whom, not only Christian doctrine, but cosmos, church, and the human psyche hold together.

The Correspondence of John Locke: Volume 7: Letters 2665-3286 Covering the Years 1686-1689 (Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke)
by: Locke, John Beer/ E. S. d

Hardcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, 1st, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket. A large part of the correspondence of John Locke is extant. The letters range in date from 1652 to 1704. They constitute the principle authority for Locke's biography, more especially in so far as they show his environment - material, intellectual, and spiritual. They bring together the ordinary course of his life and many of the great issues of his time. Locke had many interests, including medicine, education, discovery and expansion overseas, the foundations of government, and more especially religion, and the conciliation of Christian revelation with the contemporary advances in scientific knowledge and thought. The Enlightenment is coming into being; here its emergence can be watched through the eyes of its great progenitor. This is Volume 7 only of an 8 volume set. 798 pages. The Cambridge History of Seventeenth-Century Philosophy, Volume 1by: Garber, Daniel/ Ayers, Michael

The Cambridge History of Seventeenth-Century Philosophy, Volume 1
by: Garber, Daniel/ Ayers, Michael

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with mild fading to spine, 949 pages. Volume 1 only of a 2-volume set. The Cambridge History of Seventeenth-Century Philosophy offers a uniquely comprehensive and authoritative overview of early-modern philosophy written by an international team of specialists. As with previous Cambridge Histories of Philosophy the subject is treated by topic and theme, and since history does not come packaged in neat bundles, the subject is also treated with great temporal flexibility, incorporating frequent reference to medieval and Renaissance ideas. The basic structure corresponds to the way an educated seventeenth-century European might have organized the domain of philosophy. Thus, the history of science, religious doctrine, and politics feature very prominently. Name on front fly leaf, about 12 pages with light pencil markings. Otherwise clean.

Deleuze and Spinoza: Aura of Expressionism
by: Gillian Howie

Hardcover. UK, Palgrave, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 242 pages. Expressionism, Deleuze's philosophical commentary on Spinoza, is a critically important work because its conclusions provide the foundations for Deleuze's later metaphysical speculations on the nature of power, the body, difference and singularities. Deleuze and Spinoza is the first book to examine Deleuze's philosophical assessment of Spinoza and appraise his arguments concerning the Absolute, the philosophy of mind, epistemology and moral and political philosophy. The author respects and disagrees with Deleuze the philosopher and suggests that his arguments not only lead to eliminativism and an Hobbesian politics but that they also cast a mystifying spell. The Folger Library Edition of the Works of Richard Hooker - Volume Three: Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, Books Vi VII VIII
by: Richard Hooker/ P.G. Stanwood (E

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press , 1st, 1981, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth with gilt lettering and design to spine and front cover. The writings of Richard Hooker are of central interest to those studying English Renaissance thought and literature. In this, the third volume of a much-needed critical edition of the Works of Richard Hooker, are the posthumous books of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. Hooker planned the Laws in eight books, but he died shortly after publication of Book Five. Books Six, Seven, and Eight, which contain his analysis of jurisdiction, episcopacy, and the royal supremacy, are here transcribed from versions that have the most authority. The volume also includes Hooker's autograph notes toward those texts (brought to light by P. G. Stanwood in the course of his research) and the contemporary notes by George Cranmer and Edwin Sandys on a lost draft of Book Six. Mr. Stanwood's introduction lays to rest all doubts about the authenticity of the last three books as we have them, doubts current since publication of Walton's Life of Hooker in 1662.Clean, bright copy.

The Eighteenth-Century Hymn in England by: Davie, Donald

The Eighteenth-Century Hymn in England
by: Davie, Donald

Hardcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright jacket, b&w illustrations, 167 pages. Donald Davie is the foremost literary critics of his generation and one of its leading poets. His career has been marked by a series of challenging critical interventions. The eighteenth century is the great age of the English hymn though these powerful and popular texts have been marginalized in the formation of the conventional literary canon. These are poems which have been put to the text of experience by a wider public than that generally envisaged by literary criticism, and have been kept alive by congregations in every generation. Davie's study of the eighteenth-century hymn and metrical psalm brings to light a body of literature forgotten as poetry: work by Charles Wesley and Christopher Smart, Isaac Watts and William Cowper, together with several poets unjustly neglected, such as the mysterious John Byron.

Within Reason: A Life of Spinoza by: Gullan-Whur, Margaret

Within Reason: A Life of Spinoza
by: Gullan-Whur, Margaret

Hardcover. NY, St. Martin's Press, 1st, 2000, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 398 pages. The seventeenth-century philosopher Spinoza was expelled from the Jewish community of Amsterdam the age of twenty-four for 'horrendous heresies', and was eventually reviled by all religious authorities for claiming that human beings are parts of a single, unified nature, that God is identical with nature, and that reason, not revelation, supplies the truth of any aspect of God. Undeterred, he made this thesis the basis for a rational crusade against superstition and prejudice. Dr Gullan-Whur's biography, the first for twenty-eight years, shows how Spinoza's central philosophical beliefs developed within the context of his own life. Drawing on very recent scholary research and making detailed reference to primary sources, some not previously explored, the author focuses on the philosopher's attempt to act solely through reason in the face of turbulent personal and national circumstances. This new approach demolishes the myth that Spinoza was a lofty ascetic. It exposes his emotional and sexual vulnerabilit arrogance and misogyny, yet shows his living philosophical experiment to be shrply relevant today. Clean copy.

Gangraena and the Struggle for the English Revolutionby: Ann Hughes

Gangraena and the Struggle for the English Revolution
by: Ann Hughes

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 482 pages. This is the first comprehensive study of Gangraena, an intemperate anti-sectarian polemic written by a London Presbyterian Thomas Edwards and published in three parts in 1646. These books, which bitterly opposed any moves to religious toleration, were the most notorious and widely debated texts in a Revolution in which print was crucial to political moblization. They have been equally important to later scholars who have continued the lively debate over the value of Gangraena as a source for the ideas and movements its author condemned. This study includes a thorough assessment of the usefulness of Edwards' work as a historical source, but goes beyond this to provide a wide-ranging discussion of the importance of Gangraena in its own right as a lively work of propaganda, crucial to Presbyterian campaigning in the mid-1640s. Collected Works Volume I: Scientific Rationality the Human Condition and 20th Century Cosmologies
by: Grunbaum, Adolf

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 280 pages. Adolf Grunbaum is one of the giants of 20th century philosophy of science. This volume is the first of three collecting his most essential and highly influential work. The essays collected in this first volume focus on three related areas. They discuss scientific rationality-the problem of what it takes for a theory to be called scientific, and ask whether it is plausible to draw a clear distinction between science and non-science as was famously proposed by Karl Popper. They delve into the debate between determinism and indeterminism, in both science and in the humanities. Grunbaum defends the position of the Humane Determinist, which then leads to a thorough criticism of the current theological approaches to ethics and morality-where Grunbaum defends an explicit Secular Humanism-as well as of prominent theistic interpretations of twentieth century physical cosmologies. The Limits of Lockean Rights in Propertyby: Sreenivasan, Gopal

The Limits of Lockean Rights in Property
by: Sreenivasan, Gopal

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 162 pages. In this book, Gopal Sreenivasan provides a comprehensive interpretation of Locke's theory of property, and offers a critical assessment of that theory. Locke argued that the appropriation of things as private property does not violate the rights of others, provided that everyone still has access to the materials needed to produce their subsistence. Given that, the actual appropriation of particular things is legitimated by one's labor. Holding Locke's theory to the logic of its own argument, Sreenivasan examines the extent to which it is really serviceable as a defense of private property. He contends that a purified version of this theory - one that adheres consistently to the logic of Locke's argument while excluding considerations extraneous to it - does in fact legitimate a form of private property. This purified theory is defensible in contemporary, secular terms, since nothing to which Locke gives an ineliminable theological foundation belongs to the logical structure of his argument. The resulting regime of private property is both substantially egalitarian and significantly different from the traditional liberal institution of private property. Clean copy.

Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 317 pages. Michael Allen's latest work on the profoundly influential Florentine thinker of the fifteenth century, Marsilio Ficino, will be welcomed by philosophers, literary scholars, and historians of the Renaissance, as well as by classicists. Ficino was responsible for inaugurating, shaping, and disseminating the wide-ranging philosophico-cultural movement known as Renaissance Platonism, and his views on the Sophist, which he saw as Plato's preeminent ontological dialogue, are of signal interest. This dialogue also served Ficino as a vehicle for exploring a number of other humanist, philosophical, and magical preoccupations, including the theme of man the artist and creator.

Philodemus: on Methods of Inference. A Study in Ancient Empiricism by: Philodemus, Philip Howard De Lacey, Estelle Allan De Lacey

Philodemus: on Methods of Inference. A Study in Ancient Empiricism
by: Philodemus, Philip Howard De Lacey, Estelle Allan De Lacey

Hardcover. Philadelphia, American Philological Association, 1st, 1941, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, green cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine, 200 pages. The Greek text with facing translation runs from pages 22-199. The rest of the book is discussions chapters discussing the polemics between Stoic and Epicureans and the ways the Philodemus arguments might be improvements on Early Modern empiricism. Classic scholarly treatise presents a detailed study of the manner in which the problem of method was expressed by the empirically oriented philosophy of the Epicureans and Sceptics, and by their rationalistic opponents, the Stoics. Each of these schools developed a theory of signs, as the basis for both epistemological and logical speculations. Philodemus' treatise is a defense of Epicurean empirical method, and simultaneously an attack on the rival Stoic rationalistic method. This is first English translation of this work. Clean, bright copy.

The Saving Grace of America's Green Jeremiad by: John Gatta

The Saving Grace of America's Green Jeremiad
by: John Gatta

Hardcover. Lanham MD, Lexington Books, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 143 pages. American nature writing characteristically embodies an appreciative, lyrical evocation of the natural world. But often, too, green-disposed authors have been moved to dramatize diverse, anthropogenic perils to environmental health. John Gatta freshly reveals how this dark yet graced and hopeful strain of environmental literature enlarges upon a jeremiad tradition of prophecy inherited from Puritan New England. Across successive historical periods, such expression has assumed a rich variety of American form--as creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction, or film documentary. In the spirit of ancient Hebrew prophecy, jeremiads--unlike diatribes--reach beyond effusions of doom and gloom toward the prospect of change through a conversion of heart. Accordingly, the new climate fiction and much other writing steeped in what Gatta terms this "Green Jeremiad" tradition not only warn of material threats to life's flourishing, but may also look to stir spiritual understanding and renewal. Clean copy.

The Unity of Plato's Sophist: Between the Sophist and the Philosopher (Cambridge Classical Studies)by: Noburu Notomi

The Unity of Plato's Sophist: Between the Sophist and the Philosopher (Cambridge Classical Studies)
by: Noburu Notomi

Hardcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 346 pages. Dr. Notomi presents a new interpretation of one of Plato's most important dialogues, the Sophist, addressing both historical context and philosophical content. He shows how important the issues concerning the sophist (professional teacher and rhetorician in ancient Greece) are to the possibility of philosophy. His new approach to the whole dialogue reveals that Plato struggles with difficult philosophical issues in a single line of inquiry; and that Plato shows, in defining the sophist, his conception of the authentic philosopher. Priscillian of Avila: The Occult and the Charismatic in the Early Church by: Chadwick, Henry

Priscillian of Avila: The Occult and the Charismatic in the Early Church
by: Chadwick, Henry

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, reprint, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 250 pages. Priscillian (died c.385) was a wealthy nobleman of Roman Hispania who promoted a strict form of Christian asceticism. He became bishop of Avila in 380. Certain practices of his followers (such as meeting at country villas instead of attending church) were denounced at the Council of Zaragoza in 380. Tensions between Priscillian and bishops opposed to his views continued, as well as political manoeuvring by both sides. Around 385, Priscillian was charged with sorcery and executed by authority of the Emperor Maximus. The ascetic movement Priscillianism is named after him, and continued in Hispania and Gaul until the late 6th century. Tractates by Priscillian and close followers, which had seemed lost, were discovered in 1885 and published in 1889. Clean, bright copy.

De Iure Belli ac Pacis Libri Tres In Quibus Ius Naturae et Gentium..by: Grotius Hugo/PC. Molhuysen (editor )

De Iure Belli ac Pacis Libri Tres In Quibus Ius Naturae et Gentium..
by: Grotius Hugo/PC. Molhuysen (editor )

Hardcover. Clark NJ, The Lawbook Exchange,, 2005, Hardcover, blue cloth stamped in green with gilt lettering, 752 pages. No dust jacket. Reprint of the standard critical Latin edition of Grotius's magnum opus of 1625, which established the framework of modern international law. Grotius describes the situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines the principles of armed combat. Though based on Christian natural law, Grotius advanced the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis. In this regard he pointed to the future by moving international law in a secular direction. A work of painstaking philological research, this edition is based on the final version edited by the author, which issued posthumously in 1646. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.
