This exhibition and monograph propose a selection of works from the 1970s to today which reveal the particular approach of Susan Meiselas toward to the underlying reasons for making photographs, how the image concerns it's subject as much as the photographer and the role that these images can have at different levels in society and particularly in photojournalism. She questions the relationship between the image and the subject in such a way as to include the people portrayed in the image in the process of the making. There is nothing systematic in her approach: each work expresses in a very strong manner that context is vital to the understanding of photography. Therefore her work is specific to the persons portrayed, to the notion of community to which they belong and to the locality of the geographic and political territories that the artist addresses. The way of the showing the work is equally a part of the thought process. How does the spectator behold the artwork? It is often comprised of many parts, made in different media: each "layer" is used to document a level of meaning. For Meiselas one should be able to grasp why the image was taken. Both the subject of the image and the context in which the images are shown are taken into account in the elaboration of each project.

Features the photographic work of Academy Award winning Cinematographer Karl Struss taken when he visited Bermuda in the late 1950s. Mr. Struss first visited Bermuda in 1912. Enchanted with the island, he returned in the fall of 1913 to take more photographs. This led to his appointment in 1914 by the Bermuda Trade Development Board to take photographs for the Island's 1915-16 official tourists' guide, Bermuda: Nature's Fairyland. Mr. Struss did not return to Bermuda for more than 40 years, until the late 1950s when he came with his wife Ethel. His photographs from that trip show Bermuda on the cusp of social and economic change. The original transparencies were taken with Ektachrome colour film on a stereo camera.

Taken in 1936 by Walker Evans as part of his work for the Farm Security Administration, Kitchen Corner was not published until 1960, when it was included in a new edition of Walker Evans and James Agee's classic Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. The 1960 reissue of Evans and Agee's book had an enormous impact on Americans' perceptions of the Depression, creating a memory-image retrospectively through Walker's iconic photographs and Agee's text. In this latest addition to the Afterall One Work series, photographer Olivier Richon examines Kitchen Corner. The photograph is particularly significant, he argues, because it uses a documentary form that privileges detachment, calling attention to overlooked objects and to the architecture of the dispossessed.
