As a photographer for Life magazine from 1936 to 1959, John Phillips witnessed his share of troubles. He also found himself in the company of such illustrious leaders as FDR, Churchill, Stalin, and Tito during his prodigious travels across the world. Phillips, who died in 1996, was with the magazine from its inception, and his work helped to cement the publication's reputation for capturing unforgettable moments and images. Though plenty of lighter moments grace these pages, many of the included photographs are devoted to exposing one of the most turbulent periods of the 20th century, giving the book a historic sense of tragedy that can still be felt 50 years later.

John Sullivan, "can only dream of what this seaside resort was like for those who visited in the early 1900s." With Old Ocean City, Sullivan brings back those long-ago summers through the words and photographs of the Walker family of Washington, D.C. Avid photographers as well as sports enthusiasts, the Walkers preserved their Ocean City summers in hundreds of snapshots. And the Walkers' son, Robert, kept a detailed record of those days in a small leather-bound journal, titled My Vacation, in which he wrote almost daily from 1912 to 1916. In Old Ocean City, Sullivan mixes his own commentary and explanatory captions with excerpts from Robert Walker's journal and more than one hundred family photographs (discovered in 1994, Sullivan notes, in a sweltering attic in Berlin, Maryland). Views of handsome beach architecture and grass-covered dunes suggest an Ocean City almost unimaginable today. Rare photographs and accounts of shorebird hunting (banned in 1918 to protect sandpipers, plover, herons, and other species) are an arresting contrast to more familiar scenes of boating, fishing, and beachcombing. We see the Walker children growing up-and Ocean City growing up around them. The result is a surprising look at a place "far different than our memories would recall." Sullivan includes a time line of Ocean City history and Walker family visits, starting with the formation of the Atlantic Hotel Company in 1868 (the company's stockholders chose the name Ocean City at their 1875 meeting in Salisbury) and ending with the Walkers' sale of their beloved cottage in 1950.

The Film Museum of Berlin contains 25,000 objects and 18,000 images related to Dietrich, and this book is like a museum exhibition held expressly for Dietrich lovers. Albert Renger-Patzsch, together with August Sander and Karl Blossfeldt, was one of the undisputed pioneers of twentieth-century German photography. Indeed, what Sander achieved in portrait photography and Blossfeldt in plant photography, Renger-Patzsch achieved in his renderings of objects and the material world. As a protagonist of the movement that came to be known as Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), he wanted to record, phenomenologically as it were, the exact appearance of objects -- their form, material, and surface. Thus he rejected any kind of artistic claim for himself. Believing that the photographer should strive to capture the "essence of the object," he called for documentation rather than art.

His photographs from that trip show Bermuda on the cusp of social and economic change.The original transparencies were taken with Ektachrome colour film on a stereo camera.

At times magical and at others chilling, the circus is a world of magic and spectacle for the viewer, but for the performer, a career in the circus often brings with it a nomadic, lonely life. In Circus Girl, photographer Saibal Das captures beautiful and unusual images of circus girls, photographs which evokes this sense of darkness and resignation that underlies the otherworldly feats they perform under the big top. For instance, in one photograph, a circus girl whose act involves a lioness is seen sitting in front of a mirror putting on her makeup. The lioness that she usually whips in the ring stands behind her, her paw touching the girl's shoulder affectionately. But both wear a solemn look. In another, the girl sits on her props, staring silently at the snack packets strewn on the ground. The giant marquee is empty. Internationally renowned mime Nola Rae provides a haunting accompanying text that poetically comments on the transient wanderings of the circus performers who often yearn for a conventional family life while donning their costumes and taking hold of the trapeze. Rae gives voice to the circus girls, articulating the thoughts too often hidden by the brilliant illusion of stage lights.

Although best known for large liners and capital ships, between 1914 and 1920, the Clydebank shipyard of John Brown & Sons built a vast range of vessels. This volume features 200 photos depicting in unprecedented detail every aspect of the yard's output, from the liner Aquitania in 1914 to the cruiser Enterprise, completed in 1920. While ships are the main focus of the book, the photos also chronicle the impact of the war on working conditions in the yard, most noticeably in the introduction of women in large numbers to the workforce. This is one of the most gorgeous collections of classic B&W Hollywood pictures published in a long time. Actually, "Hollywood" isn't exactly accurate, as the late Edward Quinn did most of his work in Europe; most of the photos were taken at Cannes (including, of course, the Cannes Film Festival) or on the Riviera in the 1950's and early 1960's. The book is a huge hardbound with most of the photos in full-page format, and the publishers cleverly printed the captions on a separate pullout (in multiple languages, withal!) so as not to take space away from the pictures.

Essays by leading authorities on the artist's work accompany a stunning collection of nearly two hundred photographs by modernist American photographer Charles Sheeler, offering a landmark retrospective of of the work of the influential master of twentieth-century photography. Sheeler visited Europe in 1929 and an important part of this trip was to photograph Chartres Cathedral, he called it "...one of the outstanding experiences of a lifetime". The book includes thirteen beautiful shots of the Cathedral and they look remarkably like his photos of the Ford Motor Rouge River blast furnaces and other exterior bits of the industrial plant which he took in 1927. After 1929 Sheeler concentrated on his paintings. The photos in the book for this period: 1929 to 1939, include house interiors and several for his Power series. One of these, the wheels of a Hudson steam loco was the basis of his famous super realist 1939 painting 'Rolling Power'. The images in the book are taken from Lane Collection, of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, who own the Sheeler photographic estate and the book was originally published in conjunction with exhibitions in 2003/4.
