"I don't have two lives," Annie Leibovitz writes in the Introduction to this collection of her work from 1990--2005. "This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it." Portraits of well-known figures-Johnny Cash, Nicole Kidman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Keith Richards, Michael Jordan, Joan Didion, R2-D2, Patti Smith, Nelson Mandela, Jack Nicholson, William Burroughs, George W. Bush with members of his Cabinet-appear alongside pictures of Leibovitz's family and friends, reportage from the siege of Sarajevo in the early Nineties, and landscapes made even more indelible through Leibovitz's discerning eye. The images form a narrative rich in contrasts and continuities: The photographer has a long relationship that ends with illness and death. She chronicles the celebrations and heartbreaks of her large and robust family. She has children of her own. All the while she is working, and the public work resonates with the themes of her life.

Since 2001, Candacy A. Taylor (a former waitress herself) has traveled more than 26,000 miles throughout the United States collecting stories of these "lifers," as many waitresses aged fifty or over playfully call themselves. She interviewed fifty-seven waitresses in thirty-eight towns and cities. Their compelling stories are complemented and enhanced by Taylor's striking color photographs of the waitresses at work.Taylor expected that the waitresses she'd meet would feel overworked and underappreciated, but was surprised and delighted to find that the opposite was true. The proud, capable waitresses Taylor interviewed loved their jobs and, even if given the opportunity, "wouldn't do anything else." Nearly all the waitresses said that the physical labor of waitressing helped them to age more gracefully and that the daily contact with customers and coworkers kept them socially engaged. Lifers generally make more money from serving regular customers with whom they forge bonds over decades and their seniority earns them respect from their coworkers and managers. Taylor's sensitive and respectful portrayal of career waitresses who have turned their jobs into a rewarding lifetime pursuit turns Counter Culture into an invaluable portrait of the continued importance of community in our changing society.

In the early 1950s, Berlin-born photographer Jurgen Schadeberg captured Nelson Mandela, (then a young attorney), singer Miriam Makeba and the nightlife in Sophiatown, a dynamic black neighborhood in Johannesburg. Revealing the poverty endemic to the majority of South Africa's black population became Schadeberg's chief focus. He arrived there in 1950, at the advent of apartheid, to work for Drum, the first magazine for black readers. In 1964, when Drum was banned, Schadeberg left South Africa for Europe and the United States, creating a body of portraits unique in their ability to cut across race, class and social standing. In 1994, Schadeberg created an iconic image of Nelson Mandela, by then the first black President of South Africa, standing at the window of his former prison cell on Robben Island, where he had been detained on charges of conspiracy from 1964-1982. Schadeberg, whose work has been highly influential to younger artists, now lives and works near Paris. This substantial volume collects 250 images from across his career.

Art icon Jeff Koons lying on a giant plastic ball, Richard Serra disappearing into one of his vast steel sculptures, "king of theater" Claus Peymann sporting a cardboard crown ever since shooting his portrait of painter A.R. Penck in 1994, Oliver Mark (born 1963) has photographed countless artists, actors, politicians and other celebrities. Sometimes concentrating only on the subject against the most minimal setting possible, sometimes placing them in front of an artful background, Mark presents the rich and famous in constantly new and consistently trenchant ways, bringing their less apparent characteristics to light and casting them in disorienting circumstances. Other of Mark's subjects included here are Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, George Lucas, Sir Ridley Scott, Jenny Holzer, Mia Farrow, Norbert Tadeusz, Kenny Scharf, Georg Baselitz, David Chipperfield, Luc Tuymans, Cate Blanchett, Balthus and Sir Peter Ustinov. Besides Mark's most successful portraits, this volume also contains some of his most beautiful fashion photographs and other stills, many of which have appeared in several well-known magazines. Texts by Margit J. Mayer, Christoph Amend, Christian Boros and others round off this entertaining "best-of" collection.

The paintings, murals, and graphics of Ben Shahn (1898-1969) have made him one of the most heralded American artists of the twentieth century, but during the 1930s he was also among the nation's premier photographers. Much of his photographic work was sponsored by the New Deal's Farm Security Administration, where his colleagues included Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans.Ben Shahn's American Scene: Photographs, 1938 presents one hundred superb photographs from his most ambitious FSA project, a survey of small-town life in the Depression. John Raeburn's accompanying text illuminates the thematic and formal significance of individual photographs and reveals how, taken together, they address key cultural and political issues of the years leading up to World War II. Shahn's photographs highlight conflicts between traditional values and the newer ones introduced by modernity as represented by the movies, chain stores, and the tantalizing allure of consumer goods, and they are particularly rich in observation about the changes brought about by Americans' universal reliance on the automobile. They also explore the small town's standing as the nation's symbol of democratic community and expose the discriminatory social and racial practices that subverted this ideal in 1930s America.
