Anthony Friedkin: The Gay Essay
by: Julian Cox, Eileen Myles, et al.

Hardcover. Yale University Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 143 pages. An unprecedented look at a moving photographic series that chronicles the gay communities of Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1969 to 1972. For more than forty years, American photographer Anthony Friedkin (b. 1949), creating full-frame black-and-white images, has documented people, cities, and landscapes primarily in his home state of California. During the culturally tumultuous years of 1969 and 1970, Friedkin made a series of photographs that together offer an eloquent and expressive visual chronicle of the gay communities of Los Angeles and San Francisco at the time. This is the first book to explore the series, titled The Gay Essay, in depth, within the broader historical context that gave rise to it. 1969 witnessed the Stonewall riots in New York City and was a turning point in the history of community building and organized political activism among homosexuals in the United States. The Gay Essay provides a singular, intimate record of this crucial moment. Friedkin's portraits, taken in streets, hotels, bars, and dancehalls, demonstrate a sensitivity and an understanding that has imbued the photographs with an enduring resonance. This handsome book features seventy-five full-page plates and is accompanied by engaging essays and a poem by Eileen Myles.

Greg Gorman: Outside the Studio
by: Greg Gorman (Introduction), James Nachtwey (Foreword)

Hardcover. Damiani, 1st, 2015, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still sealed in publisher's shrinkwrap, 156 pages. Outside the Studio is photographer Greg Gorman's tenth monograph. This book takes Gorman (born 1949) outside the reaches of his studio portrait and figure-study work, for which he is best known, and onto the streets of Southeast Asia-uncharted territory for the artist. Traveling initially on behalf of Epson, giving symposiums on fine art digital printing throughout Singapore, Malaysia, China and India, Gorman got a firsthand look at these very different cultures at the very beginning of the digital revolution. The transition from analogue to digital cameras was another new experience for Gorman, who had shot film for more than 30 years. For Gorman, being in the studio with the likes of Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro was second nature, but being thrust in front of strangers in China, Kuala Lampur, India, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam was a new adventure.

Charles Ellis Johnson and the Erotic Mormon Image
by: Mary Campbell

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover 192 pages. On September 25, 1890, the Mormon prophet Wilford Woodruff publicly instructed his followers to abandon polygamy. In doing so, he initiated a process that would fundamentally alter the Latter-day Saints and their faith. Trading the most integral elements of their belief system for national acceptance, the Mormons recreated themselves as model Americans. Mary Campbell tells the story of this remarkable religious transformation in Charles Ellis Johnson and the Erotic Mormon Image. One of the church's favorite photographers, Johnson (1857-1926) spent the 1890s and early 1900s taking pictures of Mormonism's most revered figures and sacred sites. At the same time, he did a brisk business in mail-order erotica, creating and selling stereoviews that he referred to as his "spicy pictures of girls." Situating these images within the religious, artistic, and legal culture of turn-of-the-century America, Campbell reveals the unexpected ways in which they worked to bring the Saints into the nation's mainstream after the scandal of polygamy.

Unseen: London, Paris, New York: Photographs by Wolfgang Suschitzky, Dorothy Bohm and Neil Libbert 1930s-1960s
by: Katy Barron, Zelda Cheatle, et al.

Hardcover. Ben Uri Gallery , 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. The first publication to bring together three major twentieth-century photographers - Wolfgang Suschitzky, Dorothy Bohm and Neil Libbert - presenting their artistic responses to three great world cities across three crucial decades. Today, London, Paris, and New York are so familiar that it is hard for a modern viewer to imagine them afresh without the visual expectations fostered by art, film and advertising in the digital age. Yet when each of these photographers arrived at their respective destinations, they found cities that were strange and new to them and responded by photographing them without prejudice or expectation. The photographs reveal that all three cities were not only places of social division and political tension, but also of beauty and magic. The publication and exhibition includes many works never previously exhibited in the UK, and each series presents an opportunity to view an aspect of the work of a renowned photographer in real depth. Contents: Essay by Katy Barron; Interview with Wolfgang Suschitzy by Zelda Cheatle; Interview with Dorothy Bohm by Michael Berkowitz; Interview with Neil Libbert with Jessica Feather; Biographies. 112 pages.

Band of Bikers 1962/1972
by: Scott Zieher

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 108 pages. In the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan, Scott Zieher discovered a pile of photographs among the effects of a recently deceased tenant. These photographs, presented for the first time in Band of Bikers, offer an intimate portrait of a group of gay bikers in the city and the woods, and a touching snapshot of an entire generation at it's carefree zenith. Newly aware of muscle and biker magazines and their heavy-handed eroticism, photographer and photographed brimwith a subtly vibrant, chromatic pride. The photographs as a whole bring into focus a brief, specific period of relative innocence, when middle-of-the-road Americans more often than not failed to perceive the homoerotic undertones of their most heterosexual of institutions. With conceptual light cast by issues ranging from anonymity in homosexuality and underground motorcycle chic, to vernacular photography's pop-culture ramifications, a warm and generous spirit of camaraderie pervades this subterranean survey. Like a real-world set forScorpio Rising casually captured byan unpretentious extra, presented as Band of Bikers and accompanied by an essay by Zieher, this found cache of old-school, leather party snapshots attains archeological significance.

Old Paris and Changing New York: Photographs by Eugene Atget and Berenice Abbott
by: Kevin Moore

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 156 pages, no dj issued. An insightful new look at two renowned photographers, their interconnected legacies, and the vital documents of urban transformation that they created. In this comprehensive study, Kevin Moore examines the relationship between Eugene Atget (1857-1927) and Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) and the nuances of their individual photographic projects. Abbott and Atget met in Man Ray's Paris studio in the early 1920s. Atget, then in his sixties, was obsessively recording the streets, gardens, and courtyards of the 19th-century city--old Paris--as modernization transformed it. Abbott acquired much of Atget's work after his death and was a tireless advocate for its value. She later relocated to New York and emulated Atget in her systematic documentation of that city, culminating in the publication of the project Changing New York.

Patti Smith: American Artist
by: Frank Stefanko, Patti Smith, et al.

Softcover. Insight Editions, reprint, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 164 pages. A stunning collection of photographs from Frank Stefanko featuring the Godmother of Punk herself, iconic musician and author Patti Smith. "There I was sitting in a booth at the co-op of Glassboro State College, a bucolic school in the farmlands of South Jersey. . . Suddenly, the double doors of the co-op swung open and standing there in the vacuum created was an incredible apparition, a vision in a white leather coat with long, jet-black hair flowing down her back. She moseyed in like the bad guy walking into a saloon in an old western movie. This was the first time I set eyes on Patti Smith, and I was captivated." So begins Frank Stefanko's wonderfully personal photographic tale of his friendship and artistic collaboration with Patti Smith. Stefanko's photographs and his warm, personal recollections show us an amazing young woman, long before she became Patti Smith, the cultural icon. Through images and words, we follow her search for a unique voice--from the early days of the Chelsea Hotel to spoken word at the St. Mark's Poetry Project to the release of her seminal album, Horses, and so much more.

Soulmaker: The Times of Lewis Hine
by: Nemerov, Alexander

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Between 1908 and 1917, the American photographer and sociologist Lewis Hine (1874-1940) took some of the most memorable pictures of child workers ever made. Traveling around the United States while working for the National Child Labor Committee, he photographed children in textile mills, coal mines, and factories from Vermont and Massachusetts to Georgia, Tennessee, and Missouri. Using his camera as a tool of social activism, Hine had a major influence on the development of documentary photography. But many of his pictures transcend their original purpose. Concentrating on these photographs, Alexander Nemerov reveals the special eeriness of Hine's beautiful and disturbing work as never before. Richly illustrated, the book also includes arresting contemporary photographs by Jason Francisco of the places Hine documented. Clean copy.

Hakan Ludwigson: Balls and Bulldust
by: Hakan Ludwigson

Hardcover. Steidl , 1st, 2015, Hardcover, terra-cotta cloth with pastedown photo on front cover. 264 pages, 170 color illustrations. Balls and Bulldust is a rich collection of images that explores life and work among the cattlemen in the Northern Territory in Australia. It is not another cowboy story, rather one about men and women working very hard, and seeking some kind of solitude and sense of space in the midst of harsh conditions. For some, life in Australia's outback is a life-long routine. The young are attracted by its romanticism, which is-more often than not-shattered by reality's hardships. The red dust covering this vast scrubby landscape and filling the air is prevalent in Ludwigson's images. Days can be blistering hot and temperatures at nights may sometimes fall below zero. People sleep on "swags" on the ground for weeks. The food is drab and the men are in their saddles twelve hours a day mustering herds of cattle, branding and castrating young bulls. Hakan Ludwigson spent three months with the cattlemen of the Australian outback early in his career, and returned to his native Sweden with a body of work that became Balls and Bulldust. Circus Girl
by: Das, Saibal,/ Rae, Nola

Hardcover. London/Calcutta, Seagull Books , 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Circuses provide surreal, fantastic entertainment. At times magical and at others chilling, the circus is a world of magic and spectacle for the viewer, but for the performer, a career in the circus often brings with it a nomadic, lonely life. In Circus Girl, photographer Saibal Das captures beautiful and unusual images of circus girls, photographs which evokes this sense of darkness and resignation that underlies the otherworldly feats they perform under the big top. For instance, in one photograph, a circus girl whose act involves a lioness is seen sitting in front of a mirror putting on her makeup. The lioness that she usually whips in the ring stands behind her, her paw touching the girl's shoulder affectionately. But both wear a solemn look. In another, the girl sits on her props, staring silently at the snack packets strewn on the ground. The giant marquee is empty. Internationally renowned mime Nola Rae provides a haunting accompanying text that poetically comments on the transient wanderings of the circus performers who often yearn for a conventional family life while donning their costumes and taking hold of the trapeze. Rae gives voice to the circus girls, articulating the thoughts too often hidden by the brilliant illusion of stage lights.

The First World War: Unseen Glass Plate Photographs of the Western Front by Carl De Keyzer
by: Carl De Keyzer/David Van Reybrouck

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press , 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 280 pages. Preface by Geoff Dyer. Essay by David Van Reybrouck. Includes 20 color plates and 80 halftones. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. The First World War presents a startlingly different perspective, one based on rare glass plate photographs, that reveals the war with previously unseen, even uncanny, clarity. Scanned from the original plates, with scratches and other flaws expertly removed, these oversized reproductions offer a wealth of unusual moments, including scenes of men in training, pictures of African colonial troops on the Western front, landscapes of astonishing destruction, and postmortem portraits of Belgian soldiers killed in action. Readers previously familiar with only black-and-white or sepia-toned prints of the hostilities will be riveted by the book's many authentic color photographs, products of the early autochrome method. From children playing war games to a wrenching deathbed visit, these images are extraordinary not only for their subject matter, but also for the wide range of emotions they evoke.

Hardcover. NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrinkwrap. Autochromes--plates made from a pioneering color photography process--are too light sensitive to exhibit, and as such one of the world's greatest collections has been hidden from view until now. Offering unprecedented access to the V&A's collection of autochromes--one of the greatest collections of early color photography in the world--Color Mania presents the pioneering photographic process in its full, vibrant, and painterly beauty. Fragile and light sensitive, autochromes cannot be displayed in public, and so this volume provides a rare and breathtaking opportunity to view them true to size. Newly photographed specially for this book, the V&A's abundant collection of autochromes is brought to the public for the very first time. Organized thematically and with sections focusing on the photographers who engaged with the process, Color Mania is built upon the latest scholarship and research by curator Catlin Langford and includes insights into how these extraordinary photographs are being preserved for future generations.

The Early American Daguerreotype: Cross-Currents in Art and Technology
by: Sarah Kate Gillespie

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. The daguerreotype, invented in France, came to America in 1839. By 1851, this early photographic method had been improved by American daguerreotypists to such a degree that it was often referred to as "the American process." The daguerreotype-now perhaps mostly associated with stiffly posed portraits of serious-visaged nineteenth-century personages-was an extremely detailed photographic image, produced though a complicated process involving a copper plate, light-sensitive chemicals, and mercury fumes. It was, as Sarah Kate Gillespie shows in this generously illustrated history, something wholly and remarkably new: a product of science and innovative technology that resulted in a visual object. It was a hybrid, with roots in both fine art and science, and it interacted in reciprocally formative ways with fine art, science, and technology. Gillespie maps the evolution of the daguerreotype, as medium and as profession, from its introduction to the ascendancy of the "American process," tracing its relationship to other fields and the professionalization of those fields. She does so by recounting the activities of a series of American daguerreotypists, including fine artists, scientists, and mechanical tinkerers. She describes, for example, experiments undertaken by Samuel F. B. Morse as he made the transition from artist to inventor; how artists made use of the daguerreotype, both borrowing conventions from fine art and establishing new ones for a new medium; the use of the daguerreotype in various sciences, particularly astronomy; and technological innovators who drew on their work in the mechanical arts.

Before Marilyn: The Blue Book Modeling Years
by: Astrid Franse and Michelle Morgan

Softcover. Gloucestershire UK, History Press, 1st pbk, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 237 pages. Before Marilyn tells the story of Marilyn Monroe's modeling career, during which time she was signed to the famous Blue Book Agency in Hollywood. The head of the agency, Miss Emmeline Snively, saw potential in the young woman and kept detailed records and correspondence throughout their professional relationship and beyond. On the day of Monroe's funeral, Snively gave an interview from her office, talking about the girl she had discovered, before announcing, rather dramatically, that she was closing the lid on her Marilyn Monroe archive that day - to 'lock it away forever'. This archive was purchased by Astrid Franse, and together with bestselling Marilyn Monroe biographer Michelle Morgan they draw on this collection of never-before-seen documents, letters and much, much more. Before Marilyn explores an aspect of Monroe's life that has never been fully revealed - by charting every modelling job she did, and illustrating the text with rare and unpublished photographs of the young model and her mentor.

Lewis Carroll's Photography and Modern Childhood
by: Diane Waggoner

Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 264 pages, still in publisher's shrinkwrap. Lewis Carroll began photographing children in the mid-nineteenth century, at a time when the young medium of photography was opening up new possibilities for visual representation and the notion of childhood itself was in transition. In this lavishly illustrated book, Diane Waggoner offers the first comprehensive account of Carroll as a photographer of modern childhood, exploring how his photographs of children gave visual form to emerging conceptions of childhood in the Victorian age. Situating Carroll's photography within the broader context of Victorian visual and social culture, Waggoner shows how he drew on images of childhood in painting and other media, and engaged with the visual language of the Victorian theater, fancy dress, and Pre-Raphaelitism. She provides the first in-depth analysis of Carroll's photographing of boys, which she examines in the context of boys' education and reveals to be a significant part of his photographic career. Waggoner draws on a wealth of rare archival material, demonstrating how Carroll established new aesthetic norms for images of girls, engaged with evolving definitions of masculinity, and pushed the idea of childhood to the limit with his use of dress and nude images

CUBA: singing with bright tears
by: Virginia Beahan; Contributor Jon Lee Anderson/Pico Iyer

Hardcover. Pound Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Photographing the intersection between culture and nature for over 25 years, Virginia Beahan creates luminous and finely detailed images with an 8x10 view camera that describe the complexities of this relationship in diverse geographic settings. Her eight-year project in the waning years of Fidel Castro's revolutionary Cuba resulted in a major 2009 monograph entitled CUBA singing with bright tears. The images depict a country both tragic and beautiful, struggling beneath the weight of history. Larger-than-life images of revolutionary heroes Che Guevara and Jose Marti populate the island. The Bay of Pigs is sublime and treacherous; an atmospheric body of water rimmed with jagged black coral is the same unwelcoming shore that greeted invading CIA-trained Cuban exiles over forty-seven years ago. On a billboard, Fidel Castro reminds us that the US might invade again, and if so, he "will die fighting." Virginia Beahan's work falls within the tradition of great American photographers such as Walker Evans and Robert Adams. Her luminous and detailed large-format photographs reveal a landscape imbued with nuanced stories of culture shaped by geography and human action. Cuba's long and complicated relationship with the United States is part of this unfolding drama. Clean, bright copy.

Softcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 144 pages. In the tradition of the great photographic populists Alfred Eisenstaedt and Dorothea Lange, Horace Bristol used his camera to record the human, intimate moments in the grand sweep of history. Bristol's American view included the best and the worst of this century, from poignant images of the urban poor and migrant farm workers during the Depression to the battle scenes of World War II and compelling portraits of post-war Japan and Southeast Asia. This volume presents over one hundred twenty exquisitely reproduced duotone images by Bristol, ranging from his early San Francisco photographs to his last work, taken in Southeast Asia. Combining aesthetic purity with human interest, Horace Bristol's pioneering photography is imbued with an accuracy, strength of composition, and humility that is as striking today as it was groundbreaking in its time.
