Mediterranean
by: Jodice, Mimmo

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 118 pages with b&w plates. From Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Tunisia, Syria, and Jordan, Jodice's luminous photographs evoke a vision of Mediterranean civilization that is a conflation of history and mythology. Gerda Taro
by: Irme Schaber; Richard Whelan; Kristen Lubben

Hardcover. Gottingen, Steidl/ICP , 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 175 pages. In 1934, after reading John Dos Passos' 1919, Gerda Taro left her home in Stuttgart for Paris. There she met the now legendary photographer Robert Capa, with whom she traveled to Spain at the start of the Civil War. As his lover and photographic partner--and as his manager--she is often credited with launching his career. She was also the first woman photojournalist to enter the heat of battle. The couple worked together until Taro was killed while photographing a crucial clash near Madrid in July 1937, just six days shy of her twenty-sixth birthday. The International Center of Photography holds by far the world's largest collection of Taro's work, including approximately 200 prints as well as original negatives. This selective survey of the ICP's holdings is organized chronologically, and set in context with the inclusion of magazine layouts; it is the first major collection of Gerda Taro's photographs ever published. Clean, bright copy.

Foreword by Ntozake Shange. 91 full-page plates in black-and-white by Robert Mapplethorpe; from the inside of the front cover: "Mapplethorpe's exquisitely printed pictures of both gay and straight males are explicit and erotic. In their use of flattering lights and lavish deep-toned printing, they openly declare their bold belief in the esthetic equality of the male as model. But Mapplethorpe's pictures ironically confirm the Kenneth Clark doctrine: despite their smart, gleaming finish, they hail the body divine in the most traditional manner--with the sexes swapped." The Americans
by: Frank, Robert & Jack Kerouac

Softcover. NY, Pantheon, reprint, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. With an introduction by Jack Kerouac. Robert Frank's The Americans changed the course of twentieth-century photography. In 83 photographs, Frank looked beneath the surface of American life to reveal a people plagued by racism, ill-served by their politicians and rendered numb by a rapidly expanding culture of consumption. Yet he also found novel areas of beauty in simple, overlooked corners of American life. And it was not just Frank's subject matter--cars, jukeboxes and even the road itself that redefined the icons of America; it was also his seemingly intuitive, immediate, off-kilter style, as well as his method of brilliantly linking his photographs together thematically, conceptually, formally and linguistically, that made The Americans so innovative. More of an ode or a poem than a literal document, the book is as powerful and provocative today as it was 75 years ago. This edition was printed in Switzerland by Jean Genoud under the direst supervision of Robert Frank. Clean, bright copy.

Paris: Photographs from a Time That Was
by: David Travis

Hardcover. Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 100 pages. No dust jacket issued. Eugene Atget, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Andre Kertesz, Brassai, Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Doisneau? -some of the greatest photographers of Paris? were relatively unknown when they began their most innovative work. Not yet burdened with conventional career expectations, they found the city the perfect environment in which to invent and develop an entirely new approach to conceiving the photographic image. In the 1920s and 1930s, the generation of photographers after Atget responded not only to the physical city itself but also to a new sensibility of time as a spontaneous act. Masterworks by these now-famous visionaries of the medium are featured in this elegant book of photographs of Paris from the 1850s to the 1950s, drawn from the remarkable collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Brazilian Photographs of Genevieve Naylor, 1940-1942
by: Robert M. Levine

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 156 pages. In the early 1940s as the conflict between the Axis and the Allies spread worldwide, the U.S. State Department turned its attention to Axis influence in Latin America. As head of the Office of Inter-American Affairs, Nelson Rockefeller was charged with cultivating the region's support for the Allies while portraying Brazil and its neighbors as dependable wartime partners. Genevieve Naylor, a photojournalist previously employed by the Associated Press and the WPA, was sent to Brazil in 1940 by Rockefeller's agency to provide photographs that would support its need for propaganda. Often balking at her mundane assignments, an independent-minded Naylor produced something far different and far more rich--a stunning collection of over a thousand photographs that document a rarely seen period in Brazilian history. Accompanied by analysis from Robert M. Levine, this selection of Naylor's photographs offers a unique view of everyday life during one of modern Brazil's least-examined decades. Clean copy.

Softcover. Italy, Damiani, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 160 pages. A collection of photographs of Hollywood actors, royalty and other celebrities from the golden age of Italian film--the 1950s and 1960s--arriving in Rome, back when comings and goings were event enough to merit a flash, and when the photographers who are now known as paparazzi could walk right up to the airplane steps. Here those independent lensmen--a profession and a genre born in the era documented here, one on the forefront of new realism and photojournalism--capture the salutes and waves, flamboyant and discreet, of Rome's stars as they descended to earth, seizing the mythical something that they seemed to bring with them from the sky to terra firma. Bystander: A History of Street Photography
by: Joel Meyerowitz / Colin Westerbeck

Softcover. Boston, Bulfinch, 1st pbk, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 446 pages. This landmark book chronicles the development of a kind of photography that is created out of the energy and chance juxtapositions found in everyday life on the street. Street photography is at the heart of what makes photography unique. An unprecedented study that is the first history of this tradition ever published, Bystander explores street photography through a discussion of the medium's masters - Atget, Stieglitz, Strand, Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Kertesz, Evans, Levitt, Frank, Arbus, Winogrand, and many others - and reveals along the way much about the craft and creative process of photography. Profusely illustrated with the work of more than eighty photographers, the book is composed of four parts separated by lively folios of pictures. Each part discusses a different era - from the early days of the medium in nineteenth-century Europe, to America in the late twentieth century - and devotes entire chapters to the key figures of that period. Eugene Atget: Unknown Paris
by: David Harris/Atget

Softcover. NY, The New Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 199 pages. For thirty years, Eugene Atget photographed the historic core of Paris, its buildings and monuments, its ancient streets and civic spaces, its public parks and gardens. With the exception of his earliest photographs, he chose not to represent a particular site by a single, definitive photograph but produced sequences of interrelated images that create a cumulative portrait. A collection of case studies of archetypal urban settings, this book examines Atget's approach to photography. It features 240 of his photographs-nearly all of which have never been published-assembled to display the integral relationship between the photographer's working method and his subject matter, revealing the character of Le Vieux Paris itself. In Search of Remarkable Trees: On Safari in Southern Africa
by: Thomas Pakenham

Hardcover. NY, Walker Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Thomas Pakenham, no stranger to Africa with his award-winning books The Boer War and The Scramble for Africa, nor to remarkable trees with his bestselling Remarkable Trees of the World, combines his two interests on safari in Southern Africa. His particular quarry is the rare, the giant, the very old, the extraordinary, or the simply beautiful-from a giant baobab and a prickly quiver tree in Namibia to a glorious jacaranda in South Africa and sesame bushes attacked by elephants in Botswana. He uncovers trees written about by the great explorers of the past, or associated with magic, folklore, or ritual. The narrative accompanying each image interweaves the stories of Pakenham's own journey-at some moments scaling trees to escape from enraged wildlife, while at others standing in awe before a particular tree, connected by some primitive, atavistic bond-with those of the trees themselves, imbuing each with personality and presence. The result is a beautifully crafted blend of botany and social history, the product of a brilliant photographer, an original mind, and a superlative writer. 208 pages in color. Clean copy. Washington Seen: A Photographic History, 1875-1965
by: Fredric M. Miller and Jr. Gillette Howard F.

Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In Washington Seen Fredric Miller and Howard Gillette bring together nearly four hundred unique photographs from the Gilded Age to the Great Society. Throughout, the focus is not on streets and monuments but on the complex relationships among the people of Washington-men and women, black and white-and the way they worked and lived. Here are Washingtonians at home and at work, at restaurant tables and lunch counters, in schools and churches, dancing the jitterbug and going to the movies, cheering the Redskins, the Senators, and the Homestead Greys. In the accompanying text, Miller and Gillette invite readers to enter into an intimate "conversation with the past," offering insightful commentary on the images of people whose faces cannot fail to captivate. Haiti
by: Bruce Gilden

Hardcover. London, Dewi Lewis Publishing, 1st UK, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket with a small close tear. The corpse of a young man lies in the street, his eyes half open, his face covered with insects. The uncaptioned image is like a jolt of electricity; no words could improve upon it. Ian Thomson's introduction confirms that life has little value in Haiti (cheap for humans, worthless for animals), a once proud nation that has declined into a police state where brutal poverty is the order of the day. Bruce Gilden's largely shocking black-and-white pictures reveal that decline as perhaps never before in a shoot-from-the-hip style of photojournalism. 120 pages. Clean copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Dreamer With a Thousand Thrills: The Rediscovered Photographs of Tom Palumbo
by: Patricia Bosworth (Editor), Tom Palumbo

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, 240 pages. During the 1950s and 60s, Tom Palumbo was part of an influential group of young photographers working for the best fashion magazines in America -Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. Tom perfected his craft under the guidance of legends like Alexey Brodovitch, Carmel Snow, Diana Vreeland, and Alex Liberman. Tom's serene style contrasted with Richard Avedon's jazzed-up images and Lillian Bassman's soft blurred effects. Often Tom's particular layouts provided the balance in an issue. His pictures invariably enhanced the fashions of the 50s, where women were thought of as objects of worship, and beauty was thought of as an ideal. Tom photographed every day, producing unique images like jazz legend Miles Davis laughing. He loved taking pictures of artists like next-door neighbors Comden and Green; the young Mia Farrow and Jane Fonda; novelist Jack Kerouac. Late in life, Tom worked in theatre. But to him there was never much difference in the photographs he took or the plays he directed since both contained drama. Paradox and revelation-these two elements energized Tom Palumbo's life. These rediscovered photographs, celebrated in their time but not seen in decades, are presented here in book form for the first time ever, by award-winning author and Palumbo's widow, Patricia Bosworth. Clean, still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Amandes Ameres: Bitter Almonds, Bittere Mandeln
by: Bustamante, Jean-Marc [Photographer]

Softcover. NY/London, Phaidon Press, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 80 pages, oblong format. Amandes Ameres (Bitter Almonds) is a portfolio of vivid color photographs that are characteristic of photographer and sculptor Jean-Marc Bustamante's photographic tableaux: intense yet contemplative cityscape images of the capital cities from around the globe, from Buenos Aires to Miami to Tel Aviv. A work of art in its own right, Amandes Ameres was launched in June 1997 at the international art event Documenta X in Kassel, Germany. The volume signifies a highly original distillation of Bustamante's subtle outlook, both in its presentation and in the selection of images designed to illustrate the strikingly sculptural, painterly and symphonic aspects of his innovative and sensitive use of the camera. The compilation is cutting-edge in the context of contemporary visual art and how it is presented, displaying a style that is carefully suited to the atmosphere evoked by Bustamante. Clean copy.

Russian Journal 1965-1990
by: Inge Morath /Yevgeny Yevtushenko (Intro.)

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. An acclaimed photographer's images and the words of Russia's foremost writers combine in an intimate record of the contemporary Russian experience: an intractable culture in the throes of irrevocable change. 30 color and 70 black-and-white photographs. This handsome photo album with Morath's own foreword and captions depicts a world to which many Russians in the grip of post-Soviet nostalgia long to return. Morath's Russia is devoid of Soviet excresence: no ugly concrete apartment blocks, Stalinist skyscrapers, or exhortative banners appear. Landscapes and street scenes are poetic and largely deserted. Sidetrips to Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, and Uzbekistan are subsumed under "Russian culture." The people shown are mainly artists and intellectuals, and portraits of embattled dissident writers (Nadezhda Mandelstam and Joseph Brodsky) testify to the moral support Morath and her husband Arthur Miller offered them in the 1960s. The album includes fond letters from Mandelstam and poet Andrei Voznesensky, as well as Olga Andreyev Carlisle's reminiscence of her 1967 trip to the Soviet Union with Morath. Clean copy.
