Carrie Catt: Feminist Politician
by: Fowler, Robert Booth

Hardcover. Boston, Northeastern University, 1st, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover. Light wear and rubbing to dust jacket, spine slightly sunned. Fowler attempts to restore to Catt her central role in the suffragist movement in the United States and in the founding of the League of Women Voters. Although the first three chapters do recount her life, the author himself notes that this is not a conventional biography. Rather, the work aims primarily at an analysis of Catt as a political leader and political visionary.

Carrie Mae Weems: A Great Turn in the Possible
by: Carrie Mae Weems

Hardcover. NY, Distributed Art Publishers (DAP), 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with silver lettering. One of the most influential American artists working today, Carrie Mae Weems has investigated narratives around family, race, gender, sexism, class and the consequences of power for more than 40 years. Her complex oeuvre-always ahead of its time, and profoundly formative for younger generations of artists-has employed photography (for which she is best known), fabric, text, audio, digital images, installation and video. Writing in the New York Times, Holland Cotter succinctly described Weems as "a superb image maker and a moral force, focused and irrepressible." This volume, spanning four decades of work, is the most thorough survey yet published. It includes Weems' earliest series, such as Family Pictures and Stories, for which she photographed her relatives and close friends; the legendary Kitchen Table Series, in which she posed in a domestic setting; and other critically acclaimed works and series such as Ain't Jokin', Colored People, From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried, Not Manet's Type, The Jefferson Suite, Monuments, Roaming, Museums, Constructing History (A Class Ponders the Future), Slow Fade to Black and the Obama Project, among many others. Contextualizing these pieces are essays by LaCharles Ward and Fred Moten and a chronology by Raul Munoz. The book also includes a visual essay by Weems that presents a personal selection of her own works from the artist's perspective. In publisher's shrinkwrap.

Cartesian Linguistics: A Chapter in the History of Rationalist Thought
by: Chomsky, Noam

Hardcover. NY, Harper & Row, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 119 pages. A book on linguistics by Noam Chomsky, written with the purpose of deepening 'our understanding of the nature of language and the mental processes and structures that underlie its use and acquisition'. Chomsky wished to shed light on these underlying structures of the human language, and subsequently whether one can infer the nature of an organism from its language. Cartesian linguistics refers to a form of linguistics developed during the time of RenE Descartes, a prominent 17th century philosopher whose ideas continue to influence modern philosophy. In Cartesian Linguistics, Chomsky traces the development of linguistic theory from Descartes to Wilhelm von Humboldt, that is, from the period of the Enlightenment directly up to Romanticism. The central doctrine of Cartesian linguistics maintains that the general features of grammatical structure are common to all languages and reflect certain fundamental properties of the mind. by: Robert Zorn

Hardcover. NY, Overlook Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 317 pages. For seventy-five years, the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's infant son has gone unsolved. Evidence, opinion, and logic have discredited the notion that Bruno Richard Hauptmann --electrocuted in 1936 --acted alone. In this meticulous and authoritative account of the crime, the trial, and the times of the Lindbergh kidnapping, Robert Zorn clears away decades of ungrounded speculation surrounding the case. Inspired by his father's relationship with the actual accomplices --including the mastermind --he presents the clearest ever picture of a criminal partnership, which would shake every class and culture of American society. Using personal possessions and documents, never-before seen photographs, new forensic evidence, and extensive research, Robert Zorn has written a shocking and captivating account of the crime and the original "Trial of the Century." Thin black remainder line on bottom edge otherwise a clean, bright copy.
