Dreams and Shadows: Thomas H. Hotchkiss in Nineteenth-Century Italyby: Novak, Barbara

Dreams and Shadows: Thomas H. Hotchkiss in Nineteenth-Century Italy
by: Novak, Barbara

Softcover. New York, Universe Pub, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 138 pages. Softcover. Color photographs. Light edgewear to wrappers otherwise clean, unmarked copy. Hotchkiss (1833-69), an American painter and intimate of Asher B. Durand and Elihu Vedder, is the quintessential delicate artist who dies, underappreciated, at a young age. The title refers not only to his romantic landscapes but also to his sketchy career. This catalog accompanies an exhibition that opens this fall at the National Academy of Design. Novak, a premier art historian of the Hudson River School, provides a provocative essay on Hotchkiss as the fragile, poetic artist fixated on capturing evocative images of the ancient past. Felker, the exhibition curator, provides an insightful catalog of works arranged by subject matter. Appendixes include an exhibition checklist, a chronology of the artist's life, and transcriptions of selected manuscript material. Recommended for academically oriented art history collections.

by: Jack Kamen, Al Feldstein, Otto Binder

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 236 pages, b&w art throughout. Jack Kamen's stories for The Vault of Horror, Tales From the Crypt, and The Haunt of Fear favored unnerving creepiness over gruesome shock. This volume features 27 Kamen favorites, drawn at the peak of powers, including:"Kamen's Kalamity," our title story, featuring the "true" origin story of the artist himself! Clean copy.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude in the Vogel Collection
by: Donovan, Molly

Hardcover. New York, National Gallery of Art/Harry N. Abrams, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 144 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, tight copy with mniior wear to edges. Color photos throughout. Christo and Jeanne-Claude have created some of the most visually breathtaking works of the twentieth century. From early wrapped objects to monumental outdoor projects such as The Umbrellas, Japan-U.S.A., 1984-91 and Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971-95, the artists have used fabric - wrapped, draped, and folded over, around, and through natural and constructed forms - to transcend the traditional bounds of painting, drawing, sculpture, and architecture. This volume spanning forty years of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's remarkable career accompanies an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art of sixty-one works from the collection of Dorothy and Herbert Voqel, whose relationship with the artists dates to 1971. The wonderful breadth of works presented in color and discussed here includes several early packages, models for large-scale public works, preparatory drawings and collages for projects in urban and rural sites, and photographs of the completed projects.

Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth
by: Ware, Chris

Softcover. New York, Pantheon Graphic Library, reprint, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Non-paginated. Softcover with light edgewear to cover wrapper. Color comics throughout by Chris Ware. Clean, tight copy. This first book from Chicago author Chris Ware is a pleasantly-decorated view at a lonely and emotionally-impaired "everyman" (Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth), who is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. An improvisatory romance which gingerly deports itself between 1890's Chicago and 1980's small town Michigan, the reader is helped along by thousands of colored illustrations and diagrams, which, when read rapidly in sequence, provide a convincing illusion of life and movement. The bulk of the work is supported by fold-out instructions, an index, paper cut-outs, and a brief apology, all of which concrete to form a rich portrait of a man stunted by a paralyzing fear of being disliked.

Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifestoby: Miren Arzalluz

Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto
by: Miren Arzalluz

Hardcover. Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial cloth. Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel is an icon of fashion, and can lay claim to having invented the look of the 20th century. At the height of the Belle Epoque, she stripped women of their corsets and feathers, bobbed their hair, put them in bathing suits and sent them out to get tanned in the sun. She introduced the little black dress; trousers for women; costume jewelry; the exquisitely comfortable suit that became her trademark. Early in the Roaring Twenties, Chanel made the first ever couture perfume - No. 5 - presenting it in the famous little square-cut flagon that, inspired by Picasso and Cubism, became the arch symbol of the Art Deco style. No. 5 remains the most popular scent ever created. This volume, published to accompany a landmark exhibition in Paris, traces the birth and evolution of Chanel's timeless style. Specially commissioned photographs by Julien T. Hamon showcase the clothing, while essays by fashion historians illuminate a period, an event or a theme. Rare archival documents, including portraits of Gabrielle Chanel herself, round out the book. Remainder line on bottom edge otherwise clean copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Holland on Paper: In the Age of Art Nouveauby: Clifford Ackley

Holland on Paper: In the Age of Art Nouveau
by: Clifford Ackley

Hardcover. Boston, MFA Publications, Museum of Fine Arts, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 256 pages, profusely illustrated. From the 1890s through the turn of the century, there was a flourishing of new, imaginative art and craft throughout Europe that we now know as Art Nouveau. The Netherlands experienced an inventive variant of this art and design phenomenon, but until now it has been largely overshadowed by its counterparts in other countries, especially France. This richly illustrated book is the first in English to celebrate the Dutch contribution to Art Nouveau through a tour of more than 100 works on paper--posters, decorative calendars and illustrated books, as well as prints and drawings. These innovative works of graphic design reveal the progressive Dutch artists' conscious reaction against the past, their inspiration in natural forms and exotic cultures, and their embrace of the principle that art should transform everyday life. They also show how the New Art--Nieuwe Kunst in Dutch--coexisted and sometimes intertwined in the Netherlands with other artistic strands, including persistent realist trends, Symbolism and the emergence of modernism. Included here are early drawings by well-known artists Vincent van Gogh and Bart van der Leck, as well as new discoveries from Jan Toorop, Theo Nieuwenhuis, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, Theo Hoytema, G. W. Dijsselhof and C. A. Lion Cachet. This beautifully illustrated book is the first in English to celebrate the Dutch contribution to Art Nouveau through a tour of over one hundred posters, decorative calendars, and illustrated books, as well as prints and drawings. With text by Clifford S. Ackley, one of the leading specialists on Dutch prints and drawings, Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau provides a fascinating and visually rewarding introduction to a rich and creative artistic era.

Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune: The Complete Sunday Newspaper Strips 1933-1935 (Vol. 1)
by: Norwood, Rick (Editor) and Roy Crane

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 132 pages, illustrated in color by the strip's creator, Roy Crane. No dj issued. Roy Crane created the first American adventure strip: Wash Tubbs. The character Captain Easy spun off into his own Sunday page in 1933, and Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune: The Complete Sunday Newspaper Strips Vol. 1 collects these full-color strips from that point until 1935. In Volume One, Captain Easy visits a lost city, battles pirates, dons a diving suit in search of treasure; everywhere he goes, he finds beautiful women. Captain Easy not only influenced roles for the likes of Hollywood actors such as Cary Grant or Errol Flynn, he influenced virtually every comics hero who followed him - Gil Kane once said "Superman was Captain Easy; Batman was Captain Easy." Crane combined adventure and humor in a Bigfoot cartooning style: according to comic-strip historian Richard Marschall, Crane "develop[ed] expressive techniques and a whole dictionary of conventions and signs for future comic strip artists. Volume One also features some of the best and rarest Roy Crane art, as well as illustrations from his sketchbooks. It will also contain biographical and critical introductions to Crane and his work.

The definitive retrospective of Dan DeCarlo, the great Archie Comics artist -- a fitting tribute to the life and art of one of the world's all-time best cartoonists, lavishly designed and now expanded with nearly 350 illustrations, including rare cartoons and strips, and of course, lots of those fabulous DeCarlo ladies! Dan DeCarlo worked mostly on wholesome all-American features like Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica and My Friend Irma, but he populated these innocent stories with his irresistibly attractive women. His unique blend of hilarious homespun humor and libido-sparking art made DeCarlo's work outshine the competition. Though best known as the definitive Archie Comics artist and creator of Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, DeCarlo also brought his unique style to dozens of other characters including Millie the Model, Big Boy, Batman, and The Simpsons. Fan, friend, and fellow cartoonist Bill Morrison has produced the ultimate book on this remarkable artist, lavishly designed with nearly 350 illustrations. Included are rare World War II-era cartoons, original Humorama pinups, seldom-seen newspaper strips, examples of his justly famous commercial comics work, and of course, lots and lots of those fabulous DeCarlo ladies! Full color and black-and-white illustrations and photographs throughout. First published in 2006 with 40 fewer pages, this is the new, revised and expanded edition. Clean, bright copy.

London Calling:Bacon, Freud, Kossoff, Andrews, Auerbach, and Kitajby: Crippa, Elena, Lampert, Catherine

London Calling:Bacon, Freud, Kossoff, Andrews, Auerbach, and Kitaj
by: Crippa, Elena, Lampert, Catherine

Hardcover. Loa Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 136 pages. Offering a fresh account of developments that have since characterized postwar British painting, this catalogue focuses on Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, R. B. Kitaj, and Leon Kossoff-- artists who worked in close proximity as they were developing new forms of realism. If for many years their efforts seemed to clash with dominant tendencies, reassessment in recent decades has afforded their work a central position in a richer and more complex understanding of postwar British art and culture. Rigorous and gorgeously illustrated, the essays reflect on the parallel yet diverse trajectories of these artists, their friendships and mutual admiration, and the divergence of their practice from the discourse of high modernism. The authors seek to dispel the notion of their work as a uniquely British endeavor by highlighting the artists' international outlook and ongoing dialogue with contemporary European and American painters as well as masters from previous generations.

by: B. H. Friedman

Hardcover. NY, McGraw-Hill, 1st, 1972, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a price-clipped dust jacket with light wear, 293 pages, b&w illustrations. Nowhere is the complex and destructive painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) revealed with more compassion and insight than in this exemplary biography. Friedman, a friend of Pollock's and active in the art world, shows him to be a brilliant man tormented by his relationship to his family; an artist who worked hard through years of poverty to achieve his controversial painting technique; the first American painter to gain an international reputation for himself and for what has been variously called Action Painting or Abstract Expressionism; and a man who struggled with alcohol and the tension between gentleness and violence. Childe Hassam: Impressionist
by: Warren Adelson and Jay E. Cantor/ William Gerdts

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Small paper scar on front fly leaf where tape pull left dime-size white spot. Otherwise like new. 256 pages. Childe Hassam's impressive career as one of America's foremost Impressionists is celebrated and illuminated in this dazzlingly beautiful volume. No other American Impressionist ever surpassed the quality and variety of Hassam's output as a painter and draftsman. Equally talented in oils, watercolors, and prints, he explored rain-swept city scenes, glorious gardens, exquisite women, and stirring flag-lined streets. Many of these irresistible pictures are hidden in private collections and are rarely, if ever, accessible to the public; others are on view at major museums across the country, from the Metropolitan Museum to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. By approaching Childe Hassam (1859-1935) from different angles, the three authors reveal this multitalented artist's many facets and uncover previously unknown aspects of his life and work. The authoritative essays are illustrated with a brilliant array of color illustrations that represent all of Hassam's styles, from Barbizon-inspired Tonalism to Impressionism to Post-Impressionism. The book concludes with an invaluable illustrated chronology and an annotated bibliography.

Rebecca Horn: Concert for Buchenwald by: Horn, Rebecca

Rebecca Horn: Concert for Buchenwald
by: Horn, Rebecca

Hardcover. Zurich, Scalo, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 104 pages. In 1999, acclaimed German multimedia artist Rebecca Horn created Concert for Buchenwald, a large-scale, two-part installation in Weimar/Germany commemorating the horrors of genocide and emigration. This darkly intense work evokes both the shoah and the mass murders in former Yugoslavia. The first part of the installation is set in an abandoned train depot. Its walls are lined with glass panes behind whose shiny surfaces you can make out layer upon layer of ashes. Running alongside one of the walls, railroad tracks are blocked up by densely entangled heaps of various stringed instruments, reminiscent of the piles of corpses that were discovered in Buchenwald. The second part of Concert for Buchenwald is installed in Schloss Ettersburg, an 18th century palatial residence. Here, the humming sound of panicked bees is audible from hives suspended from the ceiling of an opulent ballroom, and suggests memories of expulsion and escape. This book includes several essays that explore various aspects and interpretations of Horn's installation, as well as her own notes tracing the origins of the installation's prominent metaphors. Essays by Doris von Drahten, Boris Groys, Rebecca Horn, Bernd Kauffmann, and Martin Mosebach. Clean copy.
