An Orgy of Playboy's Eldon Dedini
by: Dedini, Eldon

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Eldon Dedini has been one of Playboy's most recognizable full-page gag cartoonists. With a masterful watercolor technique that burlesques a broad range of subjects, from East and West Coast urban and suburban adult-hipster to classical Japanese erotic prints, Dedini's most personal cartoons rely on mythology and legend. They evoke a bucolic sexually-liberated paradise that leaves his readers lingering over the imagery long after the gag registers. The Art of Playboy's Eldon Dedini is the first retrospective collection of his work, and gathers in one volume the most sophisticated, elegant, and funny gag panels of the past six decades.

by: Taylor, Michael R.

Hardcover. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 253 pages, color illustrations. Bibliography and index. Thomas Chimes is one of the most important artists to emerge in Philadelphia since World War II. Tracing the stylistic evolution of Chimes's idiosyncratic art, this book presents a long-overdue survey of his five-decade career: canvases combining landscape imagery with symbols such as crucifixes (late 1950s-mid-1960s); mixed-media constructions set within finely crafted metal boxes (late 1960s-early 1970s); his best-known works, a series of forty-eight intimate sepia-toned panel portraits of nineteenth- and twentieth-century writers and artists that are placed within oversized wood frames (1973-78); and the enigmatic 'white paintings' of the past two decades.

Meanwhile: Milton Caniff - A Biography of Milton Caniff
by: Harvey, R. C.

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 952 pages. Traces Caniffs life from the cradle to the grave, marking the milestones in the development of the comic strip (Steve Canyon, and Terry and the Pirates) that Caniff established. Caniff reshaped the medium and set standards by which all storytelling strips were subsequently judged. Although Caniff adapted to changing fashions, he is best known for innovations such as his impressionistic chiaroscuro drawing style that suggested reality economically with shadow rather than with detail. The book examines the artistic innovations and work routines of a nationally distributed cartoonist whose career was central the development of the artform, marking along the way the milestones in the development of comic strip artistry that Caniff established. by: Opper, Frederick Burr

Hardcover. US, NBM Publishing, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 110 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Opper was already a quite successful cartoonist/illustrator for the prestigious Puck magazine when William Randolph Hearst lured him out to create a comic strip for the New York Journal. While a step down from (relatively) high to low brow, Opper jumped at the chance and out came ?Happy Hooligan" an un-heroized vagrant who ends up very badly at the end of each strip, no matter how much good he might mean. His perennial demise surely went on to inspire Wile E. Coyote or Mr. O, especially as his own cowardice and unworthiness contributes to his hilarious woes. This second entry in ?Forever Nuts' presents a collection of the better early full color Sundays. Clean, tight copy.

The Early Years of Mutt & Jeff (Forever Nuts: Classic Screwball Strips)
by: Fisher/ Jeffrey Lindenblatt (Ed.), Bud

Hardcover. NY, NBM, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Early b&w comic strips. Mutt and Jeff was the first successful daily comic strip; before it, the funnies were Sunday features. It debuted in 1907, however, as A. Mutt, limning the follies of lanky racetrack gambler Augustus Mutt. Diminutive sidekick Jeff appeared the following year to form a partnership that lasted until the strip's overdue demise in 1983. Mutt and Jeff was the first strip to essay weeks-long story lines, such as a trip to Mexico to join Pancho Villa's revolution. Compared to better-remembered strips of the era, Mutt and Jeff was crudely drawn, yet it captured the nation's fancy. Despite its significance in comics history, Mutt and Jeff is scantly regarded today. By the mid-1920s, Fisher handed creative duties over to ghosts to free up time for the playboy lifestyle that the strip's sizable revenues allowed him. Clean copy.

This Ain't No Disco : New Wave Album Covers
by: McKnight-Trontz, Jennifer

Softcover. NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 256 pages. Why did Frankie say "Relax"? Did anyone really want to hurt Boy George? And why didn't anybody walk in L.A.? This Ain't No Disco can't answer all these head-scratchers, but it does bring the New Wave era back with page after totally awesome page of 300 of the best album covers. This rad collection includes covers from the late 1970s to the mid-'80s and will have true believers of a certain generation totally spazzing. New Wave was defined as much by style, fashion, and graphic design as the music itself witness the ruffled cuffs and heavy makeup of the New Romantics, the skinny ties and peg-pants of the neo-Mods, and the unsettling robotic personae of Devo and Gary Numan. Bursting with wild hairstyles, futuristic typography, pastel shapes, and outlandish clothing, these are the album covers that defined an era and continue to influence music and fashion styles today. A nostalgic trek with a mental soundtrack, This Ain't No Disco will inspire readers to don those rubber bracelets once again and proclaim, "Let's dance this mess around!"

Blazing Combat
by: Goodwin, Archie

Softcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, reprint, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, A comic-book classic with timely resonance: Blazing Combat was an American war-comics magazine published by Warren Publishing from 1965 to 1966. Written and edited by Archie Goodwin , with artwork by such industry notables as Gene Colan , Frank Frazetta , John Severin , Alex Toth , Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Wally Wood , it featured war stories in both contemporary and period settings, unified by a humanistic theme of the personal costs of war, rather than by traditional men's adventure motifs. What proved to be the most controversial were stories set during the then-contemporary Vietnam War; one such story caused key distributors to stop selling the title. Fantagraphics softcover edition of the sold-out 2011 hardcover, magnificently printed and bound, of these stories, superbly reproduced from the original printer's film negatives.

Rudy Burckhardt
by: Lopate, Phillip and Vincent Katz

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. The poet John Ashbery wrote of Rudy Burckhardt in 1980: "Before there was an underground, there was Rudy Burckhardt. The genial, Swiss-born jack-of-all-trades and master of several has remained unsung for so long that he is practically a subterranean monument." Since that time Burckhardt's reputation has steadily grown - as photographer, filmmaker, and painter - beyond Manhattan's downtown community of artists in which he lived and worked. For six decades Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) was a discreet, but enduring, and ultimately important figure in New York's avant-garde art world. Author Phillip Lopate, a long-time friend of the photographer, provides an insightful and thought-provoking homage to the quiet brilliance of a national treasure. And the poet and curator, Vincent Katz, has contributed an essay further elaborating on Burckhardt's photographic achievement. Illustrated with almost three hundred photographs, Rudy Burckhardt presents the remarkable depth and range of the artist's work. The book will fascinate anyone interested in the New York art world and offers a revelation for all those interested in photography.

Maripolarama
by: Anna Sui (Author), Glenn O'Brien (Author, Introduction), Diego Cortez (Author, Afterword)

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 128 pages. During the early 80s, New York's Lower East Side was a hotbed of creative activity. Unknown artists were synthesizing the fertile ground at the legendary New York nightclubs Studio 54, the Mudd Club, Club 57, Palladium, and Danceteria while on their way to international fame and acclaim. Among those emerging were Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Grace Jones, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Vincent Gallo, Anna Sui, Exene Cervenka, Kid Creole, and Diego Cortez. Maripol was part of a collective of artists, graffiti writers, street dancers, and performers who all thrived together in the explosive downtown eccentricity. As an image maker and stylist for Madonna during her "Like a Virgin" days, jewelry designer, art director, and producer Maripol relentlessly documented the movers and shakers of the early 80s scene through the lens of her instant Polaroid SX-70. Collected for the first time in Maripolarama, Maripol's photographs vividly depict the extraordinary personalities that inhabited the "forever" hip, arty Manhattan clubland during the post-punk era when hip hop was in its earliest stages and graffiti covered the landscape. Whether it's Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Basquiat, or Madonna modeling a bright pink wig, Maripolarama provides lively and inspiring insight into a time long gone.
