Robert Crumb is often credited with single-handedly transforming the comics medium into a place for adult expression, in the process pioneering the underground comic book industry, and transforming the vernacular language of 20th-century America into an instantly recognizable and popular aesthetic. Now, for the first time, Dan Nadel, delivers a "gripping and essential account" (The Boston Globe) of how this complicated artist survived childhood abuse, fame in his twenties, more fame, and came out the other side intact. Braiding biography with "cultural history and criticism...that honors the complexity of [its] subject, even, perhaps particularly, when it gets ugly" (Los Angeles Times), Crumb is the story of a richly complex life at the forefront of both the underground and popular cultures of post-war America. The miniaturist art of gem engraving is the least familiar of the major arts of ancient Greece, yet we know it to have been practiced by the greatest artists. This book presents a comprehensive account of the art in Greek lands from the early Bronze Age down to the Hellenistic period. The gems are related to history and to the artistic achievements in other media of their day, and the subject matter of the scenes engraved upon them is examined and found to hold much that will be new to students of Greek myth and iconography. The development of the Bronze Age studios in the Minoan and Mycenaean world is discussed, and the works of the great period of Classical gem engraving are resolved into their styles and schools, with a special chapter devoted to Greek works within the Persian Empire. Hardcover. Munich/NY, Prestel, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 120 pages. 110 illustrations with 68 in color. From his childhood on, Mallorca was a second home for Joan Miro. His mother was from the island, as did his wife Pilar Juncosa. It became his permanent home in the mid-fifties and he built a large studio there. He died there on the 25th of December 1983 at the age of 90. This book is about the varied themes and techniques of the artist's later works painting, sculpture, and ceramics. It was the clear light of Mallorca which especially fascinated Miro - the poetic blues of the sky and sea. In his sculpture, he was especially inspired by the artistic creativity of the island inhabitants, not to mention the agriculture and precipitous cliffs which give the landscape of Mallorca its unique quality. Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 240 pages. A new account of Cezanne's complex relationship with his wife, who served as the subject of some of his most iconic portraits. Paul Cezanne's (1839-1906) portraits of Hortense Fiquet (1850-1922), his wife and the subject of some of his iconic portraits, rank among the most powerful of their kind in French modernism. Yet, posterity has not been kind to Madame Cezanne. She was called a distraction, blamed for her husband's "lackluster" landscapes, and disdained for her impenetrable expression in the paintings. The reality is more complex, for while Fiquet may not have been the passion of Cezanne's lifetime, she was a willing accomplice, as model, mother of his only son, and unwavering partner against all odds. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 152 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Featuring many rare works and a large- scale, previously forgotten masterwork, this wide-ranging yet intimate book reintroduces readers to one of the most versatile and beloved artists of the post-war era. Romanian-born Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) had one of the most remarkable careers in American art. While renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades, he was equally acclaimed for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures he exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. Through these parallel yet integrated careers, he crafted a rich, playful and constantly evolving visual language. Known to the larger public as the creator of the iconic View of the World from 9th Avenue, Steinberg lamented being most famous as "the man who drew that poster." This beautiful volume goes a long way toward correcting that limited perception. It brings together more than eighty works in a variety of media: collage, drawings, objects, and photographs. It also features Steinberg's astonishing mural, Art Viewers, a gigantic assemblage that was shown on a single occasion in 1966. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.
Hardcover. Munich/NJ, Prestel, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 256 pages. One of the most important German postwar artists, Joseph Beuys is known for his drawings, performance art, activism, and teaching, influencing a generation of younger artists and expanding the concept of what art is. He had an ambitious goal for his art: to transform western culture into a more peaceful, democratic, and creative place. He also considered everyone to be an artist and that art and life should not be viewed separately. This book pulls together all of the avant-garde artist's posters from his entire oeuvre. His earliest posters often announced exhibitions of his own performance art, while later posters expressed his philosophical and political opinions, such as those for Germany's Green Party, which he was a founding member of. This book includes full page illustrations of Beuys' most important posters, essays about Beuys' influence, an extensive biography of the artist and a complete catalogue of all posters created under his guidance. Text in English and German. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Hardcover. Munich/NY, Prestel Publishing, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 304 pages. There are hardly any artists who are as fascinating in terms of their work and personality as Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). By declaring an everyday object a work of art and thereby revolutionizing art history as the inventor of the readymade, he became a forerunner for an entire generation of conceptual artists. To this day, the influence of his works and writings holds immense significance for contemporary art. In addition to the significant Duchamp collection at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the publication also addresses the unique archive of the Swiss artist and Duchamp researcher Serge Stauffer. The 100 questions, addressed by Stauffer to Duchamp in 1960 and shown here for the first time along with Duchamp's answers, provide not only essential insights into Duchamp's artistic thinking but also demonstrate Stauffer's extraordinary research work.
