Peck was friends with N.C.Wyeth and Clifford Ashley and many of the other students from the school. His first illustration was published in 1903 for Leslie's Popular Monthly Magazine. He became a Prolific artist illustrator under Pyles' influence.

He began his formal education by taking correspondence classes through the International Correspondence School. Soon after, the artist took night classes at the Cleveland School of Art where he received a scholarship to complete his formal art studies. He is best known for his Saturday Evening Post covers, and responsible for several of the Don't Talk set of World War II propaganda posters.

Atherton had aspired to be a fine artist, however his first paid jobs were for commercial art firms designing advertisements for corporations such as General Motors, Shell Oil, Container Corporation of America, and Dole. However, by 1936, he returned to the fine arts. His poster for the New York World's Fair of 1939 displayed surrealist elements as observed by the burnt orange background and a blue floating earth. It featured Lady Liberty holding the symbols of the World's Fair, the Trylon and Perisphere, as well as Earth in her lap against an orange background.

His first success was with art rather than writing, however; he was selling ideas for cartoons to the New Yorker magazine, while still a student at Yale. In the end, Stevenson was a prolific poet, writer, illustrator, and cartoonist, publishing more than 100 children's books and contributing 79 covers and 1,988 cartoons to The New Yorker, where he was a cartoonist for over 50 years.
