Focus: The Secret, Sexy, Sometimes Sordid World of Fashion Photographers
by: Gross, Michael

Hardcover. New York, Atria Books, 1st Hardcover, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 416 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Remainder mark to bottom edge of textblock. Otherwise a very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear to dust jacket. Black and white photographs. Tracing the highs and lows of fashion photography from the late 1940s to today, Gross vividly chronicles the fierce rivalries between photographers, fashion editors, and publishers like Conde Nast and Hearst, weaving together candid interviews, never-before-told insider anecdotes and insights born of his three decades of front-row and backstage reporting on modern fashion. An unprecedented look at an eccentric and seductive profession and the men and women who practice it on the treacherous shifting sands of pop and fashion culture, Focus depicts--perhaps most importantly--the rewards and cost, both terribly high, of translating an artist's vision of beauty for an often cold and cruel commercial reality.

Food on the Move: Dining on the Legendary Railway Journeys of the Worldby: Sharon Hudgins

Food on the Move: Dining on the Legendary Railway Journeys of the World
by: Sharon Hudgins

Hardcover. London, Reaktion Books, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 256 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Meals associated with train travel have been an important aspect of railway history for more than a century - from dinners in dining cars to lunches at station buffets to foods purchased from platform vendors. For many travelers, the experience of eating on a railway journey is often a highlight of the trip, a major part of the 'romance of the rails'. Food on the Move focuses on the culinary history of these famous journeys on five continents, from the earliest days of rail travel to the present. The engaging story and vivid illustrations invite readers to discover an array of railway feasts: haute cuisine in the elegant dining carriages of the Orient Express, American steak-and-eggs on the Santa Fe Super Chief, and home-cooked regional foods along the Trans-Siberian tracks. Readers will be tempted to eat their way across Canada's vast interior and Australia's spectacular and colourful Outback; grab an infamous `British railway sandwich' to munch on the Flying Scotsman; snack on spicy samosas on the Darjeeling Himalayan `Toy Train'; dine at high speed on Japan's `Bullet Train'; and sip South African wines in a Blue Train luxury lounge car featuring windows of glass fused with gold dust. Food on the Move focuses on the culinary history of these famous journeys. Clean copy.

Food on the Rails: The Golden Era of Railroad Diningby: Quinzio, Jeri

Food on the Rails: The Golden Era of Railroad Dining
by: Quinzio, Jeri

Hardcover. Lanham MD, Rowman & Littlefield , 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, glossy pictorial boards, 173 pages, b&w illustrations. In roughly one hundred years - from the 1870s to the 1970s - dining on trains began, soared to great heights, and then fell to earth. The founders of the first railroad companies cared more about hauling freight than feeding passengers. The only food available on trains in the mid-nineteenth century was whatever passengers brought aboard in their lunch baskets or managed to pick up at a brief station stop. It was hardly fine dining. Seeing the business possibilities in offering long-distance passengers comforts such as beds, toilets, and meals, George Pullman and other pioneering railroaders like Georges Nagelmackers of Orient Express fame, transformed rail travel. Fine dining and wines became the norm for elite railroad travelers by the turn of the twentieth century. The foods served on railroads - from consomme to turbot to souffle, always accompanied by champagne - equaled that of the finest restaurants, hotels, and steamships. Bright, clean copy.

Form and Fancy: Factories and Factory Buildings by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, 1916-1939by: Skinner, Joan S.

Form and Fancy: Factories and Factory Buildings by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, 1916-1939
by: Skinner, Joan S.

Softcover. Liverpool Univeristy Press, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pages. In 1916 Thomas Wallis founded a new practice, Wallis, Gilbert & Partner, primarily to collaborate with an American company in the design of factories to be constructed of reinforced concrete. Designing factories was not then popular among architects and many manufacturers regarded the employment of an architect a wanton extravagance. Wallis's move could be seen as a reckless gamble, but his and his partners' subsequent achievements suggest that his choice had been well considered; some of the best known inter-war industrial building - Firestone, Hoover, The Gramophone Company, Glaxo Laboratories - were their work. In Form and Fancy, Dr Skinner looks first at the biographical background of Wallis, at the history and organisation of the partnership he founded, and at the many factors that contributed to its reputation in the inter-war years. She then offers a perspective on architectural thought and activity in that period, and of the attitudes and influences on factory design. Designs by the partnership for over one hundred factories and factory buildings have been discovered and at the core of the book is a third chapter which analyses and assesses them. Dr Skinner concludes with an evaluation of the design philosophy of Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, the aim of which was to contribute to the successful pursuit of business by the companies that commissioned them.

Fort Huachuca
by: Price, Ethel Jackson

Softcover. Charleston, SC, Arcadia Publishing, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, b&w photos throughout. At the foot of the Huachuca Mountains, the U.S. Army founded one of the most crucial military posts for American expansion into the southwest frontier. Soldiers had been stationed in the region for decades, but in 1877 Fort Huachuca became the symbolic cornerstone of America's western domain. The Native American word huachuca, meaning "place of thunder," described the sporadic but marvelous electrical storms in the area, but the skies would not be the only thing booming. During the tumultuous campaigns to resolve American and Indian disputes, the U.S. infantry and famed Buffalo Soldiers faced off with Geronimo and his Apache nation in both tense negotiations and bitter combat. As time marched on, the fort developed into a permanent installation with barracks, modern training grounds, and other facilities to accommodate troop rotations and eventually became the innovative Center for Military Intelligence. Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan
by: Toby Jurovics, Carol Johnson, et al.

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 272 pages. The image of the untamed American West persists as one of our country's most enduring cultural myths, and few photographers have captured more compelling images of the frontier than Timothy H. O'Sullivan. Trained under Mathew Brady, O'Sullivan accompanied several government expeditions to the West--most notably with geologist Clarence King in 1867 and cartographer George M. Wheeler in 1871. Along these journeys, O'Sullivan produced many beautiful photographs that exhibit a forthright and rigorous style formed in response to the landscapes he encountered. Faced with challenging terrain and lacking previous photographic examples on which to rely, O'Sullivan created a body of work that was without precedent in its visual and emotional complexities. The first major publication on O'Sullivan in more than thirty years, Framing the West offers a new aesthetic and formal interpretation of O'Sullivan's photographs and assesses his influence on the larger photographic canon. The book features previously unpublished and rarely seen images and serves as a field guide for O'Sullivan's original prints, presenting them for the first time in sequence with the chronology of their production.

Fred Herzog: Modern Color by: Herzog, Fred

Fred Herzog: Modern Color
by: Herzog, Fred

Hardcover. Berlin, Hatje Cantz, reprint, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 319 pages. Text by David Campany, Jeff Wall, Hans-Michael Koetzle. Text in English and German. Fred Herzog is known for his unusual use of color in the 1950s and 1960s, a time when art photography was almost exclusively associated with black and white imagery. The Canadian photographer worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film for over 50 years, and only in the past decade has technology allowed him to make archival pigment prints that match the exceptional color and intensity of the Kodachrome slide. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as a pre-figuration of the New Color photographers of the seventies. This book brings together over 230 images, many never before reproduced, and will feature essays by acclaimed authors David Campany and Hans-Michael Koetzle. Small bunp tp top of front board otherwise very good, clean copy.

Freedom Sounds: Civil Rights Call out to Jazz and Africa by: Ingrid Monson

Freedom Sounds: Civil Rights Call out to Jazz and Africa
by: Ingrid Monson

Softcover. NY, Oxford University Press, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 402 pages, b&w illustrations. An insightful examination of the impact of the Civil Rights Movement and African Independence on jazz in the 1950s and 60s, Freedom Sounds traces the complex relationships among music, politics, aesthetics, and activism through the lens of the hot button racial and economic issues of the time. Ingrid Monson illustrates how the contentious and soul-searching debates in the Civil Rights, African Independence, and Black Power movements shaped aesthetic debates and exerted a moral pressure on musicians to take action. Throughout, her arguments show how jazz musicians' quest for self-determination as artists and human beings also led to fascinating and far reaching musical explorations and a lasting ethos of social critique and transcendence. French Daguerreotypes
by: Buerger, Janet E.

Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. Lavishly illustrated, this volume is the first complete catalog of the French daguerreotype collection of the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House. Janet E. Buerger uses this remarkable collection of images to produce a cultural history of the daguerreotype's most learned following--an elite group of mid-nineteenth-century intellectuals who sought to understand and develop the usefulness, potential, and beauty of this camera image. This varied group, including entrepreneurs, painters, scientists, and historians, enables Buerger to trace the influence of photography into virtually every area of nineteenth-century European intellectual life.
