Our Lady of Guadalupe The Origins and Sources of a Mexican National Symbol, 1531-1797by: Stafford Poole

Our Lady of Guadalupe The Origins and Sources of a Mexican National Symbol, 1531-1797
by: Stafford Poole

Softcover. Tucson, University of Arizona Press, 3rd pr., 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 325 pages with index. The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, based on the story of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, an Indian neophyte, at the hill of Tepeyac in December 1531, is one of the most important formative religious and national forces in the history of Mexico. It has variously been interpreted as the source of Mexican national identity, a means of continuity between the Indian past and Spanish domination, a symbol of national liberation, and a way of evangelizing and pacifying the Indians. The aphorism "Mexico was born at Tepeyac" aptly summarizes its importance. In this, the first work ever to examine in depth every historical source of the Guadalupe apparitions, Stafford Poole traces the origins and history of the account, and in the process challenges many commonly accepted assumptions and interpretations. Small corner clip to front fly leaf, otherwise a clean, tight copy.

Out of the Box: The Reinvention of Art: 1965-1975by: Carter Ratcliff

Out of the Box: The Reinvention of Art: 1965-1975
by: Carter Ratcliff

Softcover. Allworth Press, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages. Ranging from earthworks to conceptual art, this illuminating read offers an integrated view of all the significant artistic developments of one crucial decade, the extraordinary explosion that occurred between 1965 and 1975. The author, a leading art critic, focuses a new lens on this radical movement, showing the nuances that defined Minimalism in its various phases, as characterized by the inflected object, the disintegrated object, the ironic object -then the transition from the object to architecture, space, landscape, cityscape, body, performance, and conceptual art. No other account has documented in such detail the scope and impact of this artistic revolution, which the author argues spanned all mediums and pushed every aesthetic possibility of Minimalism to an extreme.

Pacific Standard Time : Los Angeles Art, 1945-1980
by: Rebecca Peabody , Andrew Perchuk, et al.

Hardcover. US, Getty Publications, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 352 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Documents the burgeoning Southern Californian post-war art scene, with several essays following a more or less chronological order, and hundreds of illustrations of artworks, but also of art people (a wonderful 1963 photograph of Marcel Duchamp playing chess with a naked Eve Babitz in front of a replica of his Large Glass in Pasadena, photographs of artists working in their studios, etc). Some names are well known, others less so, but it is the versatility, the creativity and, above all, the richness and depth of this LA art scene that strike the reader-viewer through these richly illustrated pages. The birth of a genuine pop art in California (thanks to some of the most gifted artdealers in the US), of conceptual art, the creation of a new way of making sculpture, all those aspects are tackled in an informative and erudite (sometimes too erudite, though...)text that makes this book a more than valuable addition to the literature on post-war American art.

Painted Prints: The Revelation of Color in Northern Renaissance & Baroque Engravings Etchings & Woodcuts
by: Dackerman, Susan with an essay by Thomas Primeau

Hardcover. Baltimore Museum of Art/Pennsylvania State University Press, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 297 pages. 119 color illustrations and 10 b&w. With an essay by Thomas Primeau. Catalogue entries by Deborah Carton, Susan Dackerman, Richard S. Field, Katherine Crawford Luber, Elizabeth Mansfield, Walter S. Melion, Thomas Primeau and Robert Wheaton. An old master print with color is almost invariably regarded as a suspect object because the color is presumed to be a cosmetic addition made to compensate for deficiencies of design or condition. Painted Prints challenges this deeply entrenched assumption about the material and aesthetic structure of old master prints by showing that in many cases hand coloring is not a dubious supplement to a print but is instead an integral element augmenting its expressive power, beauty, and meaning. Painters of Reality: The Legacy of Leonardo and Caravaggio in Lombardy (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series)by: Andrea Bayer and Mina Gregori

Painters of Reality: The Legacy of Leonardo and Caravaggio in Lombardy (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series)
by: Andrea Bayer and Mina Gregori

Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art , 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 272 pages. Painters of Reality, titled after an exhibition held in Milan more than fifty years ago, is the first study in English of this major aspect of Italian art. It builds on the work of the art historian Roberto Longhi. Reexamining the subject in light of copious subsequent scholarship, the authors of this volume contribute major essays that define and discuss naturalism as it appeared in both Lombard paintings and drawings. There is also a fresh consideration of the North Italian predecessors whose influence is apparent either directly or indirectly, in the paintings of Caravaggio. More detailed discussions of the subject center on the precise elements that constituted Leonardo's "hypernaturalism": the important schools of paintings that arose in Brescia, Bergamo, Cremona, and Milan; and Caravaggio's most notable successors in northern Italy, who kept Lombard realism alive into the eighteenth century. Among the 136 paintings and drawings, many never before seen outside of Italy, are influential drawings by Leonardo and major paintings by Caravaggio. Other acknowledged masters in the history of European art are represented, including Lorenzo Lotto, Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, Giovanni Battista Moroni, and Giacomo Ceruti. Works also appear from significant but less widely known artists such as Sofonisba, Anguissola, Vincenzo Campi, Moretto da Brescia, and Fra' Galgario.

Painting as an Art: The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts 1984by: Wollheim, Richard

Painting as an Art: The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts 1984
by: Wollheim, Richard

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, In Painting as an Art, which began as the 1984 Andrew Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., philosopher Richard Wollheim transcended the boundaries and habits of both philosophy and art history to produce a large, encompassing vision of viewing art. Wollheim had three great passions--philosophy, psychology, art--and his work attempted to unify them into a theory of the experience of art. He believed that unlocking the meaning of a painting involved retrieving, almost reenacting, the creative activity that produced it.In order to fully appreciate a work of art, Wollheim argued, critics must bring to the understanding of a work of art a much richer conception of human psychology than they have in the past: "Many [critics] . . . make do with a psychology that, if they tried to live their lives by it, would leave them at the end of an ordinary day without lovers, friends, or any insight into how this came about." Many reviewers have remarked on the insightfulness of the book's final chapter, in which Wollheim contended that certain paintings by Titian, Bellini, de Kooning, and others represent the painters' attempts to project fantasies about the human body onto the canvas. Light fading to dj spine. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Painting in Latin America, 1550-1820: From Conquest to Independence
by: Alcala, Luisa Elena

Hardcover. New Haven, CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 480 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Very clean, unmarked copy still in shrink wrap. 378 color and 10 black & white illustrations. Tight copy. While European art forms were widely disseminated, copied, and adapted throughout Latin America, colonial painting is not a derivative extension of Europe. The ongoing debate over what to call it-mestizo, hybrid, creole, indo-hispanic, tequitqui-testifies to a fundamental yet unresolved question of identity. Comparing and contrasting the Viceroyalties of New Spain, with its center in modern-day Mexico, and Peru, the authors explore the very different ways the two regions responded to the influence of the Europeans and their art. A wide range of art and artists are considered, some for the first time.

Pan American Clippers: The Golden Age of Flying Boats
by: James Trautman

Hardcover. Boston Mills Press , 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. For a world coming out of economic depression in the 1930s, the Pan American Airways Clipper "flying boats" symbolized elegance and luxury, adventure and romance. Illustrated with rare period photographs, vintage travel posters, magazine ads and colorful company brochures, this fascinating book covers every aspect of the fabulous era of Pan American's graceful clippers. Like their maritime namesakes, the Clippers used the oceans to form a vast global network of travel routes. Pan Am founder Juan Trippe was a visionary who saw the importance of international travel to a changing world. His Clippers would play a key role in the evolution of transoceanic flight, setting time and distance records over the Atlantic and Pacific, providing airmail delivery between countries, and eventually serving the Allies as troop and cargo transports during World War II. A major appeal is the 200 color images and 100 historical black-and-white photographs. Clean copy.

Papers of John Adams - Series III - General Correspondence and Other Papers of the Adams Statesmen - Volume 3 - May 1775-January 1776
by: Robert Taylor (Editor) Gregg

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Belknap Press/Harvard, 1st, 1979, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 417 pages. As the American colonies grew more restive, and a break with the mother country ceased to be unthinkable, John Adams was forced to spend less and less time with his beloved family. Although burdened by ever-expanding responsibilities in the Second Continental Congress, he found time for an amazing amount of correspondence. The majority of his letters were written to secure the facts that would enable this duty-ridden man to decide and act effectively on the issues being debated. Military affairs, a source of never-ending concern, provide some of the most fascinating subjects, including several accounts of the Battle of Bunker Hill, assessments of various high-ranking officers, and complaints about the behavior of the riflemen sent from three states southward to aid the Massachusetts troops. Paris sens dessus-dessous (Marville photographies 1852-1870)by: Mellot, Philippe

Paris sens dessus-dessous (Marville photographies 1852-1870)
by: Mellot, Philippe

Hardcover. Paris, Editions de Lodi, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, glossy boards in a matching bright dust jacket. Large format, 484 pages, FRENCH TEXT. A collection of over 500 historical photos of old Paris printed in sepia tone. Around 1832 Parisian-born Charles-Francois Bossu (1813-1879) shed his unfortunate last name (bossu means hunchback in French) and adopted the pseudonym Marville. After achieving moderate success as an illustrator of books and magazines, Marville shifted course in 1850 and took up photography, a medium that had been introduced 11 years earlier. His poetic urban views, detailed architectural studies, and picturesque landscapes quickly garnered praise.By the end of the 1850s, Marville had established a reputation as an accomplished and versatile photographer. From 1862, as official photographer for the city of Paris, he documented aspects of the radical modernization program that had been launched by Emperor Napoleon III and his chief urban planner, Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann. In this capacity, Marville photographed the city's oldest quarters, and especially the narrow, winding streets slated for demolition. Even as he recorded the disappearance of Old Paris, Marville turned his camera on the new city that had begun to emerge. Many of his photographs celebrate its glamour and comforts, while other views of the city's desolate outskirts attest to the unsettling social and physical changes wrought by rapid modernization. Taken as a whole, Marville's photographs of Paris stand as one of the earliest and most powerful explorations of urban transformation on a grand scale. Clean, bright copy.

Paris Under the Occupationby: Gilles Perrault

Paris Under the Occupation
by: Gilles Perrault

Hardcover. NY, Vendome Press, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 208 pages. Best-selling French author Perrault provides moving personal reminiscences of his childhood in occupied Paris. The brief but eloquent narrative is accompanied by hundreds of previously unpublished photos from French and German archives, collected and cataloged by Parisian art historian Azema. Together, text and photos present a graphic portrait of everyday life, recording daily human struggles to find food and fuel, the psychological warfare waged by the occupiers, and the methods of German economic exploitation. As artists, the authors place special emphasis on the arts under the occupation and document the heroism of the writers' resistance. In sum, they show how Paris "kept alive a sense of the enemy."

Paris: Photographs from a Time That Wasby: David Travis

Paris: Photographs from a Time That Was
by: David Travis

Hardcover. Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 100 pages. No dust jacket issued. Eugene Atget, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Andre Kertesz, Brassai, Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Doisneau? -some of the greatest photographers of Paris? were relatively unknown when they began their most innovative work. Not yet burdened with conventional career expectations, they found the city the perfect environment in which to invent and develop an entirely new approach to conceiving the photographic image. In the 1920s and 1930s, the generation of photographers after Atget responded not only to the physical city itself but also to a new sensibility of time as a spontaneous act. Masterworks by these now-famous visionaries of the medium are featured in this elegant book of photographs of Paris from the 1850s to the 1950s, drawn from the remarkable collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Passage to Congo, A: Photographs by Doctor Emile Muller 1923-1938by: Loos, Pierre, Pierre Buch and Emile Muller

Passage to Congo, A: Photographs by Doctor Emile Muller 1923-1938
by: Loos, Pierre, Pierre Buch and Emile Muller

Hardcover. Milan, 5 Continents, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 142 pages, b&w photographs taken by Muller. Illustrated boards, no dust jacket issued. A Passage to Congo is a collection of photographs taken by Doctor mile Muller (1891-1976) in the Congo provinces of the Kasa< and Katanga, territories of the Chokwe, Luba, Bashibushong and Basalampasu tribes. For these people, he was not the boss, but he who cured, who gave relief, who listened. He could move easily between the tribes without having to tackle the reticence that has denatured so many ethnic photographs. The privileged witnesses of esoteric ceremonies that are rarely photographed, his images are precious from an ethnographic and historical point of view, and reveal a fine aesthetic sense and profound humanity. Veritable living masks, as in the remarkable portraits of young Chokwe girls, astonishing initiation rites, scenes of divination, wild rhythmic dances responding to the beat of the large slotted drums, sculptural bodies decorated with tattoos and refined headgear recall the beauty and riches of these cultures, now lost in the modern world.

Passing the Time in Ballymenoneby: Henry Glassie

Passing the Time in Ballymenone
by: Henry Glassie

Softcover. Bloomington IN, Indiana University Press, reprint, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 852 pages. The life and art, the folklore, history, and common work of a rural community in Northern Ireland-through the eyes and pen of gifted folklorist Henry Glassie. Glassie regards the people of Ballymenone with respect and affection, allowing them to describe their ideas, life-ways, and values on their own terms, not his. Recognizing that theirs is a mindset and lifestyle that must be seen as an integrated whole, Glassie studies everything about Ballymenone from traditional songs to entertainment to religious beliefs to architecture, liberally quoting from the people who welcomed him into their homes over his extended stays. Some of his insights are pure brilliance, such as recognizing the way the poets and storytellers of a rural Irish district have adapted ancient Gaelic metrics to the English they use today. You will learn more about Ireland and its people in this one book than in a host of others. Clean copy.

Patriots and Redeemers in Japan: Motives in the Meiji Restoration by: Wilson, George M.

Patriots and Redeemers in Japan: Motives in the Meiji Restoration
by: Wilson, George M.

Softcover. Chicago, University of Chicago , 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 201 pages. In this concise but ambitious historiographical essay, Wilson argues for an approach to the Meiji Restoration that emphasizes multiple lines of motive and action. The four groups under discussion: 1. The loyalists -wanted to redeem the national image and thought themselves patriots. 2.The old guard -the samurai loyal to the shogunate. 3. The common people who only wanted stability. Some favored one side or the other and some just wanted change. 4. The foreigners -most sided with the Shogunate for economic stability. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.
