Air: 24 Hours Jennifer Bartlett
by: Eisenberg, Deborah & Jennifer Bartlett

Hardcover. NY, Harry N. Abrams, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, red cloth covers with an acetate dust jacket. 164 pages with 50 illustrations including 24 plates in full color. Text by Deborah Eisenberg. Jennifer Bartlett creates her most personal paintings, all made between 1991 and 1992. Here, in each work, the unflinching presence of time is carefully, conspicuously monitored by a clock - light gray for day, dark gray for night. But motifs, color combinations, even certain images variously recur throughout the 24 paintings, shaking us up, causing us to realize that even the most seemingly casual, intimate scenes (a child's bedroom, a bathroom, the garden fish pond) are the trappings of much larger concerns.Clean copy.

Portrait: A Life of Thomas Eakins
by: McFeely, William S.

Hardcover. New York, W. W. Norton, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 237 pages, b&w illustrations, 16 color plates. A very clean, tight copy. Thomas Eakins, a native of Philadelphia, painted two worlds: one sure of its valuesthe surgeons, inventors, musicians, and athletes of his timeand another that reflected his own struggles with depression and sexual identity. In this evenhanded account of those struggles, William S. McFeely sheds new light on Eakins's genius and on the evocative melancholy of his portraits, particularly of women, which include many of his remarkable wife, Susan McDowell Eakins. Those deeply perceptive paintings may be the greatest expressions of his art.

Art Nouveau Graphic Masterpieces: 100 Plates from "la Decoration Artistique"
by: Henry Guedy

Hardcover. Mineola NY, Calla Editions, reprint, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Designers, collectors, and Art Nouveau aficionados will treasure this original collection of 100 plates of decorative full-color graphics. These authentic images are reproduced from the now extremely hard-to-find periodical La decoration artistique, which was published in Paris during the decade before World War I. They constitute some of the rarest and best material printed during the Art Nouveau period, and these uncommonly graceful and appealing illustrations are now available in this beautifully designed hardcover edition. The dazzling array of images includes headpieces, typographical banners, and other sinuous designs bursting with parrots and peacocks, vines and flowers, and other natural motifs. Examples include storefront signage for bakeries and cafes; decorative friezes of theatrical masks and grapevines; borders of flowers, books, and birds; stenciled decorations for fire screens; and corner and ceiling ornaments. Rubens: A Porraitby: Oppenheimer, Paul

Rubens: A Porrait
by: Oppenheimer, Paul

Hardcover. NY, Cooper Square Press, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 432 pages. The most popular painter of his day, yet an artist whose reputation has fluctuated among art scholars and critics of the succeeding centuries, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is chiefly remembered today for his large canvases of sensual gardens, religious scenes, and voluptuous "Rubenesque" women. In Oppenheimer's account of his life, Rubens emerges not only as a talented painter but also as an intellectual with a unique conception of beauty that proved very influential and ahead of his time. Oppenheimer explores Rubens' ideas as he tells the story of his life, which included years as a diplomat, and illuminates his response to the humanism of the Renaissance in which he lived.

American Sublime: Landscape Painting in the United States 1820-1880by: Wilton, Andrew; Barringer, Tim

American Sublime: Landscape Painting in the United States 1820-1880
by: Wilton, Andrew; Barringer, Tim

Softcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st pbk, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 282 pages. 113 color plates, 47 in b&w. The painters who came to be known as the Hudson River School - Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Frederic Edwin Church, Jasper Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and others - found inspiration in our young country's natural wonders and were the first to paint many of its still-wild vistas. As America was settled and the wilderness receded, their successors - most notably Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran - carried their quest for the sublime to the Far West, communicating its breathtaking grandeur in brilliant views of Rocky Mountain peaks, roaring waterfalls, and vast canyons. Within a single generation these artists established the dramatic approach to American landscape painting that is celebrated in this stirringly beautiful book. The freshness of their vision, the intensity of their invention, and the energy of their execution were all born of the urgency these artists sensed in the life of America itself. Clean copy. Revoliutsiia! Demonstratsiia!: Soviet Art Put to the Test
by: Matthew S. Witkovsky, Devin Fore, et al.

Hardcover. Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Hardcover,324 pages. Published on the centenary of the Russian Revolution, this landmark book gathers information from the forefront of current research in early Soviet art, providing a new understanding of where art was presented, who saw it, and how the images incorporated and conveyed Soviet values. More than 350 works are grouped into areas of critical importance for the production, reception, and circulation of early Soviet art: battlegrounds, schools, the press, theaters, homes and storefronts, factories, festivals, and exhibitions. Paintings by El Lissitzky and Liubov Popova are joined by sculptures, costumes and textiles, decorative arts, architectural models, books, magazines, films, and more. Also included are rare and important artifacts, among them a selection of illustrated children's notes by Joseph Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Allilueva, as well as reproductions of key exhibition spaces such as the legendary Obmokhu (Constructivist) exhibition in 1921; Aleksandr Rodchenko's 'Workers' Club in 1925; and a Radio-Orator kiosk for live, projected, and printed propaganda designed by Gustav Klutsis in 1922. Bountifully illustrated, this book offers an unprecedented, cross-disciplinary analysis of two momentous decades of Soviet visual culture.

Kirby: King of Comics
by: Evanier, Mark

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. Color illustrations. Jack Kirby created or co-created some of comic books' most popular characters including Captain America, The X-Men, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, The Mighty Thor, Darkseid, and The New Gods. More significantly, he created much of the visual language for fantasy and adventure comics. There were comics before Kirby, but for the most part their page layout, graphics, and visual dynamic aped what was being done in syndicated newspaper strips. Almost everything that was different about comic books began in the forties on the drawing table of Jack Kirby. This is his story by one who knew him well-the authorized celebration of the one and only "King of Comics" and his groundbreaking work.

Dream States: Puvis de Chavannes, Modernism, and the Fantasy of Franceby: Shaw, Professor Jennifer L.

Dream States: Puvis de Chavannes, Modernism, and the Fantasy of France
by: Shaw, Professor Jennifer L.

Hardcover. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1st, March 1, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 245 pages, illustrated throughout. Clean, bright pages and tight binding. Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) was a towering figure in late nineteenth-century France. The country's greatest public painter, he created murals that decorated museums in Amiens, Rouen, and Lyons as well as major buildings in Paris-most notably the Pantheon, the Sorbonne, and the city hall. Critics from the political right, left, and center, the avant-garde, the Academy, and the state all agreed on the importance of Puvis's murals. Avant-garde artists greatly admired and drew from his work. There was much controversy, however, over the meaning of these murals. This handsomely illustrated book is the first full-length examination of Puvis's murals and their critical reception during the artist's lifetime. Jennifer L. Shaw explains that Puvis's paintings were imagined to embody a vision of France. Although his regional images, allegories of the French heritage, and evocations of the nation as an embracing motherland were all part of a grand tradition of public art, Puvis's painting style was more closely aligned with the avant-garde. Rather than providing a specific narrative or allegory of France, Puvis's murals provoked viewers to experience their own fantasies of Frenchness; rather than using the close brushwork favored by most of his contemporaries, Puvis used large flat areas of color to render his subjects. Shaw persuasively argues that Puvis was the only painter of the period to unite the traditions of public art and modernist form. Her original analysis of Puvis's art underlines his importance to the history of modernism; her examination of the public response to his art illuminates debates about art, subjectivity, and national identity in fin de siecle France.

Boris Mikhailov: The Hasselblad Award 2000
by: Knape, Gunilla

Hardcover. New York, Scalo Verlag , 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 144 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, unmarked copy still in publishers shrink-wrap. Thisbook contains a never-before published series of work from the early 1980s: Mikhailov photographed ''The Dancers'' in his hometown in the Ukraine during a period when the former Soviet Union was a reality, before the appearance of Gorbachov and "perestroika". We observe the open-air dancing scene with great astonishment; seeing older and younger people enjoy themselves in a way that might be contradictory to the images we might have about everyday life in the old Soviet Union. These cheerful images remind us how little women and men need to have a good time. An essay by Russian art critic Boris Groys and an exhaustive interview make this volume a must have for readers and libraries interested in contemporary art and photography. 65 duotone illustrations.

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: Color Sundays Vol. 1 "Call Of The Wild"by: Floyd Gottfredson , David Gerstein, et al.

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: Color Sundays Vol. 1 "Call Of The Wild"
by: Floyd Gottfredson , David Gerstein, et al.

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 280 pages. The burgeoning popularity of Mickey Mouse on the screen and in the daily newspaper comics made the 1932 addition of a full-color Sunday strip inevitable. The first surprise in this collection of the initial four years of Sunday installments is that in this early color incarnation, Mickey's face was pink rather than white! But, more significantly, each Sunday strip comprised about a dozen panels, not the measly four panels of the dailies, permitting a different pace: gags could be extended longer, and story lines unwound at their leisure. Unlike the dailies, which featured stories that went on for weeks, the Sundays mixed serialized adventures--in this volume, Mickey visits the Wild West, fights a giant in a fairy tale he tells his nephews, and scales a mountain to win a $1,000 prize--with single-episode gag strips, all drawn in a charmingly old-fashioned style. The high-spirited, adventure-seeking mouse in these vintage strips--a far cry from today's bland, domesticated version--makes it clear why Mickey captivated Depression-era America.

NYC Sex: How New York Transformed Sex in Americaby: Grady T. Turner, Martin Duberman, et al.

NYC Sex: How New York Transformed Sex in America
by: Grady T. Turner, Martin Duberman, et al.

Softcover. NY, Scala, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages. The diversity of New York City's people, cultures, religions, and backgrounds make it the indicator of American sexuality. It is black, white, gay, straight, rich, poor, rough, and tender all at once. From Margaret Sanger's dissemination of birth control to the Stonewall riot of 1969, New York City has repeatedly seen its sexual dynamics changed and American and international culture follow suit. Published to coincide with the much-anticipated opening of the Museum of Sex in New York, NYC Sex features conversations between major cultural figures and historians on sexual topics, including Grady T. Turner on "Sodom on the Hudson"; Martin Duberman and Joan Nestle on queers; Timothy J. Gilfoyle, Xaviera Hollander, and Tracy Quan on whores; Karen Finley, Luc Sante, Gene Simmons, and Art Spiegelman on the underground; and Vanessa del Rio, Legs McNeil, and Annie Sprinkle on porn. And what's a book about sex without pictures? In between the steamy conversation, NYC Sex posts photographs by Mapplethorpe, Ferrato and Gatewood; 19th-century drawings and photographs; film stills; posters; magazine pin-ups; and images of sex symbols past and present. It's a treat the whole family can enjoy. NYC Sex is the official book of the inaugural exhibition of the Museum of Sex, which will open in New York in September.

by: Barbara Stok

Softcover. SelfMadeHero, 1st US, 2015, Softcover, 142 pages illustrated in color by Stok. Translated from the Dutch by Laura Watkinson. This graphic biography documents the brief and intense period of creativity Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) spent in Arles, Provence, in southern France. Here van Gogh dreams of setting up an artists' studio--a haven where he and his friends can paint together. But attacks of mental illness leave the painter confused and disoriented. When his friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin refuses to reside permanently at the Yellow House, a distraught van Gogh cuts off part of his own ear. Throughout this period of intense emotion and hardship, Vincent's brother, Theo, stands by him, offering constant and unconditional support. Writer and illustrator Barbara Stok breathes riveting new life into a fascinating episode of art history, creating a vivid portrait of one of the world's most beloved and legendary artists. Sweetly Diabolic Art of Jim Flora, The
by: Chusid, Irwin

Softcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 180 pages. The Sweetly Diabolic Art features paintings, drawings, and sketches from the 1940s through the 1990s, most never previously published or exhibited, as well as more artifacts from Flora's 1940s tenure in the Columbia Records art department and rare newspaper and magazine illustrations spanning several decades. Sweetly Diabolic is also the first printing of an abandoned children's book concept, The X-Ray Eyes of Wallingford Hume. Equally fascinating are original, never-before-published roughs and rejected images from Flora's 1950s and '60s children's books and a gallery of pen and pencil sketches from the 1940s. Sweetly Diabolic also collects, for the first time rarely seen cartoon-science illustrations: the images are augmented by personal vignettes, mementos from the family archives, and a 1984 interview with award-winning graphic designer Robert M. Jones, who offers priceless insights.
