The challenge for graphic designers, however, is to incorporate sexuality into their work in ways that are classy rather than coarse, sensual rather than smutty, provocative rather than pornographic. This arresting volume shows how top graphic designers have leveraged the universal notion of sex to create attention-grabbing yet high-quality artistic work. Covering every medium, from print to the Web, Sex Graphics showcases images that incorporate sex in ways that range from subtle to clever to shocking. Some images hint at the act of sex itself; others flirt with humorous stereotypes. Some exude romantic overtones, and others, erotic ones. Some speak to adults, others to teens.

The enduring cultural phenomenon of comic book heroes was invented in the late 1930s by a talented and hungry group of artists and writers barely out of their teens, flying by the seat of their pants to create something new, exciting, and above all profitable. The iconography and mythology they created flourishes to this day in comic books, video, movies, fine art, advertising, and practically all other media. Supermen! collects the best and the brightest of this first generation, including Jack Cole, Will Eisner, Bill Everett, Lou Fine, Fletcher Hanks, Jack Kirby, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Basil Wolverton. If the reader is expecting to find an All-American group of altruistic do-gooders, he in for quite a jolt. As Jonathan Lethem writes in his Foreword, "A collection like Supermen! works like a reverse-neutron bomb to assumptions about the birth of the superhero image: it tears down the orderly structures of theory and history and leaves the figures standing in full view, staring back at us in all their defiant disorienting particularity, their blazing strangeness." Beautifully designed and produced in full color, Supermen! contains twenty full-length stories, ten full- sized covers, and a generous selection of vintage promotional ads, and is indispensable to anyone interested in the origins of superheroes and the history of the comic book form.

Hardcover. NY, Thames & Hudson Ltd, 1st, 2005, Book: N, Hardcover, 256 pages. In 1936, the founder of Herman Miller Inc, D. J. De Pree, committed Herman Miller to 'modern' furniture, partly because he saw a moral dimension to Gilbert Rohde's clean designs, honest materials and lack of ornamentation. In 1984, a major impetus behind Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick's Equa chair was a desire to give a reasonably priced, comfortable, good-looking chair to everybody in offices - not just the top bosses. These are just two examples of the best work done at Herman Miller. The company is concerned with larger issues of humanity, equality and bettering the world by creating great places to work through design, and has, perhaps more than any other company, revolutionized office systems and furniture in the workplace. This book is the most up-to-date compilation available of the design efforts and results from Herman Miller since its foundation, reflecting its most recent work, activities and products. But it goes beyond simply cataloguing the work of the famous design team; it shows design-related attitudes of HMI and provides examples of the benefits of creative thinking and problem-solving. Written in clear, engaging prose, Herman Miller is a must-read for anyone interested in design.

This book examines the work of Duchamp, Man Ray, and Picabia, three pioneering figures in the history of modernism. It explores the points of convergence and the parallels in their development throughout their careers. Central to this is their response to photography and film, and to the challenges posed to fine art by the development of mass production. Duchamp's paintings of 1911-12 were influenced by the representation of movement in photography, while Picabia's were shaped in part by the belief that the advent of the camera spelled the end of traditional painting. Man Ray used photography first to record his own art works and those of others, but soon saw in it a means of creating images of a status and inventiveness traditionally restricted to fine art. And, as this fully illustrated book shows, humor and eroticism were themes common to the work of all three artists.

In Li'l Abner, Al Capp moved along with everyone else into this age, guiding vbhis immensely popular adventure strip into satire. At the top of his artistic and storytelling form, Capp was more than ready to greet the postwar era. In this book you'll meet Orson Waggon (Orson Welles), boy radio genius, who has a sensational idea: kill somebody during an actual broadcast --a somebody named Abner Yokum. Also in this volume: Timberwolf McHowl, Moonbeam McSwine (who prefers the company of pigs to men) gets a bath; Fleabrain, Lonesome Polecat, Barbara Seville and another wild Sadie Hawkins Day Race. This lovable little creature loved mankind so much that it would sacrifice itself and turn into a ham steak, a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs: whatever its owner desired. Its whiskers made nice toothpicks and its eyes could be recycled as buttons. Most important, a Shmoo could reproduce faster than a rabbit. Thus, if you had one Shmoo, you were set. You didn't need to work at all. Thus did the apparent book for mankind become its curse and the powers that be decreed that all Shmoos must be exterminated. Capp's insightful morality tale was so popular that it spawned an unprecedented merchandising bonanza. Two introductions, by David Schreiner and by science fiction writer Harlan Ellison, are illustrated with various Shmoo toys manufactured. The large back cover photograph shows a selection of Shmoo merchandise in color from the Denis Kitchen collection. Also featured in this volume: Flying Sausages (parody of "Flying Saucers," a term first coined a few months earlier; Fearless Fosdick, Nightmare Alice, Salomey, Adam Lazonga, Moonbeam McSwine, Cousin Weak-Eyes and Marryin' Sam.

A great send-up of '50s youth culture and Elvis Presley parody (Daisy Mae almost marries Elvis!) Li'l Abner eats mud mushrooms and becomes the size of a blimp. The Lizard of Ooze menaces Manhattan in a spoof of '50s monster movies. And Fearless Fosdick goes to Paris. Moonbeam McSwine catches Tiny Yokum in the annual Sadie Hawkins Day Race. Also in this volume: Lower Slobbovia, Senator Jack S. Phogbound, Lonesome Polecat and Hairless Joe. Plus a surprise appearance by Phil Silvers (TV's Sgt. Bilko). And don't miss the very entertaining introduction by James Vance which focuses on "cartoonist feuds," a special form of publicity stunt mastered by Capp, pitting himself publicly against such fellow creators as Will Eisner (The Spirit), Allen Saunders (Mary Worth) and Milton Caniff (Steve Canyon). Harvey Kurtzman ultimately parodied the feud schtick in a "Hey Look!" strip reprinted here. [See the Volume 17 introduction for Capp's thinly-disguised attack on fellow cartoonist Ham Fisher.] Heavily ghosted during this period by Frank Frazetta.

A key figure in the history of British Pop Art, Blake is one of the most influential and original artists working in Britain today. Central to Blake's work since the 1950s has been his fascination with popular culture, ranging from music to Hollywood icons and wrestling stars. Perhaps his most famous engagement with Pop came with his design for the cover of The Beatles' album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. With this and other works he helped create a specifically British pop aesthetic that defined an era. A prolific artist, he has utilised a variety of media including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and printmaking; this study focuses principally on his two-dimensional works and provides the first thorough survey of his paintings from the 1950s through to the present. It will include major icons of twentieth-century art, such as Self-Portrait with badges (1961), and Have a Nice Day, Mr Hockney (1981-3), but will also feature many lesser-known works including his recent, major work The Marcel Duchamp World Series.

Hardcover. Black Dog Publishing, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 189 pages. Blasphemy: Art that Offends is a prescient examination of the perpetually troubled, often explosive relationship between religion, politics and art. This book draws on a rich wealth of visual material, tracing both the history of blasphemy as a concept and re-positioning the term in the twenty-first century. Questions of censorship and freedom of expression are today extremely volatile, a fact evinced by the recent international backlash against the Danish newspaper Islamic caricatures and the murder of the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh following the release of his notorious Submission. Blasphemy: Art that Offends provides a vital vantage point from which to view the complicated, compelling interrelations between religion, politics and the visual arts.
Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 287 pages. Pictorial boards, no dust jacket issued. This beautifully illustrated book-the definitive volume on American sculptor Mark di Suvero-features more than two hundred images of his most important works, interspersed with short texts by the artist and by other writers who have inspired his art-making practice, plus a contribution by Francois Barre. Humanist in approach and populist in sensibility, di Suvero's sculpture is accessible, inviting, and inclusive. Praised in particular for his monumental assemblages incorporating steel and wood, di Suvero emerged as a superstar in the 1960s. He was the first living artist to show his sculpture at the Tuileries Gardens, Paris, and the first honored with three major exhibitions at Storm King Art Center. His distinctive, bold pieces can be found in museums and public collections all over the world, and he continues to be the subject of numerous exhibitions both in the United States and in Europe. Mark di Suvero: Dreambook is a celebration of his artistic oeuvre and of his long, distinguished career.
Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 580 pages. 1960-1954: Design Goes Pop. This volume concentrates on the architecture and design of the first half of the 1960s, characterized by the coexistence of a number of different styles. The aftermath of the International style and Good Design were still noticeable whereas Organic Design, which had developed in parallel since the late 1940s, gradually lost its influence. From the early 1960s onwards, a new force took its place, geared toward Pop Art and popular culture, leading to Pop Design. This trend is particularly recognizable in interior design, where a variety of new synthetics and foam plastics replaced traditional materials such as metal, glass or wood, pointing the way to completely new designs. Volume V documents this with examples of designs by Ray and Charles Eames, Verner Panton, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, and Joe Colombo. On the architectural side, the impressive buildings of Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Angelo Mangiarotti, James Stirling, and others./// Hardcover, 580 pages. 1960-1954: Design Goes Pop.
