Though her work has often been overshadowed by that of her peers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, Irish designer, lacquer-artist, and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now widely recognized as a designer of great talent and individuality. She first excelled in the exacting craft of lacquer, creating screens, panels, furniture, and objects of technical virtuosity and poetic strength. Eileen Gray then developed an interest in architecture, designing two houses, "E-1027" (completed 1929) and "Tempe a Pailla" (completed 1934) in the south of France, which are seminal examples of the spirit of the Modern movement. This book analyses and illustrates the full range of her furniture, interiors, and completed architectural projects. Reprint of the edition of 1993.

This biography focuses on the couple who were at the centre of the Modern British art scene: Cedric Morris (1889-1982) and Arthur Lett-Haines (1894-1978). Both men studied in Paris in the 1920s where they absorbed the work of the French Post Impressionists, Cubists and Surrealists. Later in London, Morris became a sought-after painter of flowers, birds and landscapes, and a friend of Augustus John and Ben Nicholson. Lett was hailed as Britain's first Surrealist. They gave fabulous parties attended by the cream of creative London. Morris and Haines founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Suffolk, attended by Lucian Freud and Maggi Hambling. The atmosphere was described as 'robust and coarse, exquisite and sensitive all at once, also faintly dangerous.' The conversation was sometimes bawdy and bitchy but never boring. Lett-Haines, who ran the school, was a superb cook who swapped recipes with Elizabeth David. Cedric Morris became an award-winning plantsman and poppy iris breeder. He was an acknowledged influence on Beth Chatto, amongst others. like new.

Window-Shopping through the Iron Curtain presents a selection of more than 100 images of shop windows shot by David Hlynsky during four trips taken between 1986 and 1990 to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, East Germany, and Moscow. Using a Hasselblad camera, Hlynsky captured the slow, routine moments of daily life on the streets and in the shop windows of crumbling Communist countries.The resulting images could be still-lifes representing the intersection of a Communist ideology and a consumerist, Capitalist tool-the shop window-with the consumer stuck in the middle. Devoid of overt branding or calculated seduction, the shop windows were typically adorned with traditional yet incongruous symbols of cheer: homey lace curtains, paper flowers, painted butterflies, and pictures of happy children. Some windows were humble in their simple offerings of loaves and tinned fishes; others were zanily artistic, as in the modular display of military shirts in a Moscow storefront; and some illustrated intense professional pride, such as a sign in a Prague beauty salon depicting a pedicurist smiling fiendishly over an imperfect sole. The photographs are accompanied by essays by art historian Martha Langford and cultural studies specialist Jody Berland, as well as Hlynsky's own account of his time as a flaneur in the shopping plazas of the collapsing Soviet empire-"a vast ad-hoc museum of a failing utopia" that in 1989 began to close forever. Though pigeonholed as a regionalist chronicler of the Midwest, many of his finest on-site pictures are of Southern blacks and poor whites. Remembered best are his folksy rural scenes and aggressively three-dimensional murals, but the public tends to forget that he ran through the gamut of modernist styles (he was Jackson Pollock's teacher) and that his brilliant abstract color experiments ally him with the modernist movement. Some of Benton's crowded murals of the 1930s reflect his leftist sympathies, yet critics reviled him as politically conservative. These contradictions are illuminated in this catalogue of a touring exhibition curated by Adams. The text stands on its own as a wholly engaging biography, offering an unbuttoned look at a pugnacious, often reckless, artist who valiantly sought to preserve a rural America that was vanishing before his eyes.
