Paper Dreams: The Art & Artists of Disney Storyboardsby: Canemaker, John

Paper Dreams: The Art & Artists of Disney Storyboards
by: Canemaker, John

Hardcover. NY, Hyperion, 2nd Ed., 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. Canemaker's second volume on Disney animation (his first was Before the Animation Begins, pub. 11/15/96) covers new territory. Focusing on the birth and progression of the storyboard method, the noted animator/historian explores both the history and the personalities of the Disney storyboard department. He takes readers from the early Disney days (when Walt created the storyboard to add depth and substance to the animated shorts the early studio produced) to today (when ever-changing teams of story specialists gather material and prepare sequence drawings before artists flesh out those Disney masterpieces). Along the way, Canemaker reveals the human effort required to bring an animated film to life and throws in juicy tidbits garnered from his interviews with animation pioneers. Lavish illustrations accompany the text. Recommended for larger public libraries and essential for collections in film and animation history.

R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collectionby: Crumb, R.

R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection
by: Crumb, R.

Hardcover. New York, W. W. Norton & Company, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hard cover in slipcasse. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. A landmark work that pays splendid homage to a forgotten era of seminal American music. Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her album Cheap Thrills. It was an invitation the budding artist couldn't resist, especially since he had been fascinated with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country, and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a teen. This early collaboration proved so successful that Crumb went on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb's artistic interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s. Including such classics as Truckin' My Blues Away, Harmonica Blues, and Please Warm My Weiner, Crumb's opus also features more recent covers done for CDs. R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection is a must-have for any lover of graphics and old-time music. 450 four-color illustrations

Danger Is My Businessby: Lee Server

Danger Is My Business
by: Lee Server

Softcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 144 pages. An illustrated history of the fabulous pulp magazines from 1896 to 1953. After tracing the birth of the pulps back to the 1882 launching of Golden Argosy magazine, printed on pulpwood pages, Server organizes his unwieldy subject into categories of pulps: adventure, romance and sex, horror and fantasy, private eye, weird menace, science fiction. Each receives a lively capsule history that covers trends, reader (and sometimes, as in the case of the ``Spicys,'' government) response, and writers' bios--which, though sketchy (Hammett's Hollywood experience gets one sentence), resurrect a number of relatively obscure but seminal and fascinating figures, like Conan- creator Robert E. Howard, who shot himself dead at age 30 on the day his mother died, and Frederick Faust (a.k.a. Max Brand), who sometimes wrote around the clock, piling up two or three million words a year. Server attributes the pulps' demise to, among other factors, the advent of TV, paperbacks, and comic books, and he winds up with a note on pulp-collecting. For all of the author's savvy, though, it's above all the eye- popping illustrations (100 color, 57 b&w) that will have readers beaming. Magazine covers (some lurid, some of eerie beauty), sample pages of text and ads (``Raise Giant Frogs'')--the pulps come alive once again here, in all their eccentric glory.

Telling Stories: Philip Guston's Later Works
by: Kaufmann, David

Softcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 118 pages, illustrations in color. Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. In Telling Stories, David Kaufmann focuses on Philip Guston's controversial figurative paintings of the late 1960s and 1970s. He looks at the early critical reception of these works to see what the artist was actually doing and, at another level, to investigate the odd alchemy of artists and their audiences. Grounding his historical approach in careful readings of the paintings, Kaufmann pays close attention to Guston's intense and complicated relationship to Judaism. At the same time, by situating Guston in the context of the fashions of the New York art world, Kaufmann provides unique insight into the workings of that world at the moment when the strictures of artistic modernism began to fade.

Cola Madness: A Rock'n'Roll Sci-fi Tale of Environmental Disaster by: Panter, Gary

Cola Madness: A Rock'n'Roll Sci-fi Tale of Environmental Disaster
by: Panter, Gary

Hardcover. NY, Funny Garbage Press, 1st, 2001, Hardcover, 212 pages. Legendary underground cartoonist Panter's comics are typically anarchic and fun, but they also delve deeper. First produced in 1983, Cola Madness is published here in book form for the first time. The work stars Jimbo, Panter's enduring punk everyman, sharing billing with a cast of idiosyncratic characters including Bob War; his calamitous brother, Uncle Garcia, a smart-talking dinosaur and beleaguered guardian in a bathrobe; and Kokomo, a native in an unspecified tropical land colonized by oil companies. Posited as the hallucinatory fever dream of Kokomo, Panter's farce follows Jimbo's misadventures as he tries to get a Moka Cola at the local Jack-in-the-McTacos, the whole zany affair culminating in an absurd, scatological climax at an automated fast food restaurant. Panter delivers a visionary response to contemporary American life viewed through the wrong end of some cosmic telescope. This delightfully inane story offers a selection of Panter's themes: humanity's troubled relationship with nature and technology; the tension between restraint and the uncontrollable urge; family relationships; and Jimbo's endearing, comical self-doubt. Panter's black and white "ratty line" drawing style offers great economy while suggesting a broad range of graphic style from art brut to bathroom graffiti, and calls to mind the works of legendary cartoonists Jack Kirby and Osamu Tezuka.

Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture, 1878-1976
by: Philippe Garner

Hardcover. Taschen, reprint, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. Though her work has often been overshadowed by that of her peers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, Irish designer, lacquer-artist, and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now widely recognized as a designer of great talent and individuality. She first excelled in the exacting craft of lacquer, creating screens, panels, furniture, and objects of technical virtuosity and poetic strength. Eileen Gray then developed an interest in architecture, designing two houses, ?E-1027? (completed 1929) and ?Tempe a Pailla? (completed 1934) in the south of France, which are seminal examples of the spirit of the Modern movement. This book analyses and illustrates the full range of her furniture, interiors, and completed architectural projects. Reprint of the edition of 1993.

Hardcover. St. Petersburg, Palace Editions, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, pages. A book more about art than a book of art. He knew the artists personally, and gave them aid and comfort. there are samples of his writing (in English). There are 100 pages of large, high-quality reproductions of drawings and paintings in his collection with notes and bibliography. Most of the works are from the Khardzhiev-Chaga Foundation in Amsterdam, though a few are in private collections, and there are some which Khardzhiev was not allowed to take out of Russia, and were thus previously unknown in the West.
