Though their cool, hard surface might seem best suited to Mediterranean climates, tiles have enjoyed wide use as far afield as the Netherlands, and any area subject to heavy foot-traffic could benefit from their easily cleaned faces. Lavishly illustrated with color photographs supplied by Country Floors, a well-known tile importing company, the book emphasizes the traditional "country" look; a brief, less successful foray into modern styles relies heavily on simple geometric patterns. In his introduction, Country Floors owner Norman Karlson tells how his fascination with tiles developed. Seemingly meant as a sourcebook for designers and tile enthusiasts, the volume offers scant information on the proper application of tiles--only instructions for care and maintenance. Installation, it is hinted, should be left to a specialist.

Though her work has often been overshadowed by that of her peers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, Irish designer, lacquer-artist, and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now widely recognized as a designer of great talent and individuality. She first excelled in the exacting craft of lacquer, creating screens, panels, furniture, and objects of technical virtuosity and poetic strength. Eileen Gray then developed an interest in architecture, designing two houses, ?E-1027? (completed 1929) and ?Tempe a Pailla? (completed 1934) in the south of France, which are seminal examples of the spirit of the Modern movement. This book analyses and illustrates the full range of her furniture, interiors, and completed architectural projects. Reprint of the edition of 1993.

During the global postcard craze that peaked around 1900 and continued for several decades thereafter, photographers in Africa grasped the opportunity to serve a lucrative market for images of the continent, both locally and worldwide. Their picture postcards now contribute to understanding political and cultural changes in Africa at the time, as the rise of the new medium coincided with the expansion and consolidation of colonial rule. They also provide a way to reconstruct the life and work of the photographers of European, African and other backgrounds who created these images-which often survive only in postcard form-and in some cases published them as well. The cards were produced for residents and travelers in Africa, as well as for buyers and collectors who had never set foot on the continent. Their depictions of colonial administrations and the exploitation of resources and peoples, as well as images inscribing tribal identities and racial classifications, often reflect the colonizers' worldview. Yet it is also possible to recover the authorship of some of the African women and men who participated in these photographic encounters. For instance, some cards show that members of Africa's elites recognized the power of photographic images to enhance their standing and present their own narratives.

Khardzhiev, though apparently not a painter himself, was an heroic figure in the world of Russian art. Despite official discouragement and prohibitions, he assembled an awesome personal collection of avant-garde Soviet art. He knew the artists personally, and gave them aid and comfort. there are samples of his writing (in English). There are 100 pages of large, high-quality reproductions of drawings and paintings in his collection with notes and bibliography. Most of the works are from the Khardzhiev-Chaga Foundation in Amsterdam,though a few are in private collections, and there are some which Khardzhiev was not allowed to take out of Russia, and were thus previously unknown in the West.
