Edith Halpert: The Downtown Gallery and the Rose of American Artby: Shaykin, Rebecca

Edith Halpert: The Downtown Gallery and the Rose of American Art
by: Shaykin, Rebecca

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 232 pages. The question "What is American art?" might conjure the hyperrealism of Raphaelle Peale and William Harnett, the bold graphic style of Stuart Davis and Jacob Lawrence, or the Precisionist forms of Charles Sheeler. Little known, however, is that such notions of American art are significantly owed to a Russian Jewish immigrant named Edith Halpert. The founder of the Downtown Gallery in New York, Halpert shaped an identity for American art, declaring that its thrilling heterogeneity and democratic values were what most distinguished it from the European avant-garde. For forty-plus years, Halpert's gallery brought recognition and market success to now-legendary American artists--among them Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O'Keeffe, in addition to the artists mentioned above. She relentlessly championed nonwhite, female, and unknown artists and was a formative advisor in the shaping of many of the nation's most celebrated art museums and collections, from San Francisco to Boston. Not content with those achievements, she also pioneered the appreciation and collecting of American folk art. Richly illustrated with works that passed through her groundbreaking gallery, this book tells the extraordinary and largely overlooked story of her career and legacy. The artists Halpert launched into the American canon are household names--and this book compellingly argues that hers should be, as well. In publisher's shrinkwrap.

Common Man, Mythic Vision: The Paintings on Ben Shahn
by: Chevlowe, Susan

Softcover. NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover exhibition catalog. 194 pages. 32 plates, 32 B&W figures. Pictorial stiff wrapper with very slight wear and soiling to back cover. Frontispiece. Otherwise, a clean, tight copy. Ben Shahn (1898-1969) has long been renowned for his Social Realist paintings of Depression-era America. Equally striking, however, are Shahn's extraordinary later works, which reveal a more introspective style as well as the evolution of a new allegorical and mythical pictorial language. This book combines beautiful reproductions of Shahn's art with essays by leading experts on his life and career to present a groundbreaking survey of his powerful and engaging mature style. The volume is published in conjunction with a major traveling exhibition organized by The Jewish Museum, New York, to commemorate the centenary of Shahn's birth. The book contains more than one hundred illustrations, including thirty-two in color.

Whose Muse?: Art Museums and the Public Trust by: James Cuno et al.

Whose Muse?: Art Museums and the Public Trust
by: James Cuno et al.

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 208 pages, b&w illustrations. During the economic boom of the 1990s, art museums expanded dramatically in size, scope, and ambition. They came to be seen as new civic centers: on the one hand as places of entertainment, leisure, and commerce, on the other as socially therapeutic institutions. But museums were also criticized for everything from elitism to looting or illegally exporting works from other countries, to exhibiting works offensive to the public taste. Whose Muse? brings together five directors of leading American and British art museums who together offer a forward-looking alternative to such prevailing views. While their approaches differ, certain themes recur: As museums have become increasingly complex and costly to manage, and as government support has waned, the temptation is great to follow policies driven not by a mission but by the market. However, the directors concur that public trust can be upheld only if museums continue to see their core mission as building collections that reflect a nation's artistic legacy and providing informed and unfettered access to them. The book, based on a lecture series of the same title held in 2000-2001 by the Harvard Program for Art Museum Directors, also includes an introduction by Cuno and a fascinating --and surprisingly frank-- roundtable discussion among the participating directors. Uncommon in the hardcover, clean copy.

by: Meyer, Karl E.

Hardcover. NY, Atheneum, 1st, 1973, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 353 pages. Museums, dealers, tomb-robbers, police, and scholars form the cast of a story that moves from tropical jungles to Madison Avenue galleries, from a rifled temple to a collector's private museum. A centerpiece of the book is a detailed consideration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's acquisition of the beautiful calyx krater by Euphronios, which the Italian authorities are claiming was taken illicitly from an Etruscan tomb in 1971. 24-page b/w photo section. Creature: Paintings, Drawings, and Reflections
by: Shaun Tan

Hardcover. Levine Querido, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 224 pages. Color illustrations throughout. From the creator of The Arrival, a collection of essays illuminating his thoughts and advice for writers and artists, young and old. Shaun Tan is one of the world's most highly acclaimed narrative artists. His stories and images are loved by countless young and not-so-young readers around the world. Drawing upon 25 years as a picture book and comics creator, painter, and film-maker, Creature explores the central obsession of this visionary artist, from casual doodles to studied oil-paintings. Beyond sketches for acclaimed works such as The Arrival, The Lost Thing, and Tales From Outer Suburbia, this volume collects together for the first time unseen and stand-alone illustrations, each resonant with unwritten tales of their own. Detailed commentary by the artist offers an entertaining insight into the endless allure of imaginary, non-human beings and what they might tell us about our so-called "normal" human selves. Artists, writers, students, dreamers, and anyone interested in the deeper undercurrents of creativity, myth, and visual metaphor will find inspiration in these pages. The Painter's Eye: Notes and Essays on the Pictorial Arts by: James, Henry

The Painter's Eye: Notes and Essays on the Pictorial Arts
by: James, Henry

Hardcover. Madison WI, University of Wisconsin Press, reprint, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, brown cloth with white lettering on spine. 276 pages. Between 1868 and 1897 Henry James wrote a number of short essays and reviews of artists and art collections; these essays were published in magazines such as "Atlantic Monthly" and "Harper's Weekly" and in newspapers such as the "New York Tribune". They included James' comments on Ruskin, Turner, Whistler, Sargent, and the Impressionists, among many others. Thirty of these essays were collected and first published in a modern edition in 1956, accompanied by John Sweeney's introduction which sketched James' interests in the visual arts over a period of years, focusing on the ways in which painting and painters entered his work as subjects. Susan Griffin's new foreword places James' observations in a contemporary context. Some of the novelist's judgements will seem wrong to today's readers: he was very critical of the Impressionists, for example, but all of these essays bear the stamp of James' critical intelligence, and they tell us a great deal about his development as a writer during those years. Bight, clean copy.

Margaret Bourke- White: moments in history
by: Quimby, Sean

Hardcover. New York, D.A.P.//La Fabrica , 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. America's first female war correspondent, Margaret Bourke-White was also something of a media star, with the portrait of her decked out in flying gear, camera in hand, about to set off on a bombing raid, being a favorite pin-up among U.S. forces. Focusing on the work Bourke-White made in the 1930s and 40s in Czechoslovakia, Germany, Italy, the Soviet Union and the U.K., Moments in History presents 150 classic photographs alongside revelatory extracts from letters and publications in periodicals. Bourke-White traveled to the USSR when the first Five-Year Plan was being implemented; she documented the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, and the Allied bombing of Germany. In the summer of 1945 she was commissioned by Life to make a photographic record of the destroyed German cities. She was present at the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp and the Leipzig-Thekla forced labor camp. She recorded the partition of India and the Korean War, and one of her most famous pictures of this period is "Gandhi," which shows the subject at his spinning wheel. Also included in the catalogue are some of the word-picture sequences Bourke-White did for Fortune and Life, as well as extracts from her correspondence with personalities from the worlds of politics and culture, such as Winston Churchill and Georgia O'Keeffe. Bourke-White wanted to be the "eyes of the age," and her pictures testify to (as she put it) her "unquenchable desire to be present when history is being made."

Canemaker's second volume on Disney animation (his first was Before the Animation Begins, pub. 11/15/96) covers new territory. Focusing on the birth and progression of the storyboard method, the noted animator/historian explores both the history and the personalities of the Disney storyboard department. He takes readers from the early Disney days (when Walt created the storyboard to add depth and substance to the animated shorts the early studio produced) to today (when ever-changing teams of story specialists gather material and prepare sequence drawings before artists flesh out those Disney masterpieces). Along the way, Canemaker reveals the human effort required to bring an animated film to life and throws in juicy tidbits garnered from his interviews with animation pioneers. Lavish illustrations accompany the text. Recommended for larger public libraries and essential for collections in film and animation history.

Roy Thomas Presents Rulah Jungle Goddess Vol. 2 by: Thomas, Roy

Roy Thomas Presents Rulah Jungle Goddess Vol. 2
by: Thomas, Roy

Hardcover. London, PS publishers, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with no dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to covers. Color and Black and white pictures throughout. Rulah first appeared in Zoot Comics #7 back in June 1947 and she's generally regarded as being the brainchild of Matt Baker and, some time later, Jack Kamen and Ghastly Graham Ingels. Collects Rulah #17-27, August 1948 to June 1949. These are typical Good Girl stories of simplistic morality and mega-violence, with a bit of erotic sizzle. Rulah defends people's rights and fights evil. But she was a bit different than the standard "Good Girl Art" stuff of that era. Most of her stories feature a bad girl so there are a lot of catfights.

Alex Katz: Small Paintingsby: Alex Katz

Alex Katz: Small Paintings
by: Alex Katz

Hardcover. Kansas City, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art , 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, exhibition catalog, unpaginated. New York artist Alex Katz is best known for his eye-catching, large-scale portraits, figures, and landscapes, but in the mid-1950s he painted intimate works, originating the style that would become the hallmark of his mature work. By the early 1960s, he established a procedure of making small sketches using oil paint on Masonite board, which he would enlarge and modify, then make into paper cartoons to transfer to the canvas. He produces one or more small sketches for every large painting. Although Katz considers the large works to be his major productions, small-scale paintings are the underpinning of his work, revealing his initial passion for a subject--a love at first sight before it has fully matured. While his big paintings are akin to a public performance, the small paintings are rehearsals that reveal not only how he works but more importantly why he is interested in a particular subject. This volume focuses on the achievement and significance of Katz's small paintings.
