Burning Man: Art on Fire
by: Raiser, Jennifer

Hardcover. NY, Race Point Publishing, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 208 pages. Every August, tens of thousands of participants gather to celebrate artistic expression in Nevada's barren Black Rock Desert. This vastly inhospitable location, called the playa, is the site of Burning Man, where, within a 9-mile fence, artists called Burners create a temporary city devoted to art and participation. Braving extreme elements, over two hundred wildly ambitious works of art are created and intended to delight, provoke, involve, or amaze. In 2013, over 68,000 people attended - the highest number ever allowed on the playa. As Burning Man has created new context, new categories of art have emerged since its inception, including Art to Ride, Collaborative Art, and of course, Art to Burn. Burning Man: Art on Fire is an authorized collection of some of the most stunning examples of Burning Man art. Experience the amazing sculptures, art, stories, and interviews from the world's greatest gathering of artists. Get lost in a rich gallery of images showcasing the best examples of playa art with 170 photos. Interviews with the artists reveal not only their motivation to create art specifically for Burning Man, but they also illuminate the dramatic efforts it took to create their pieces. Featuring the incredible photography of long-time Burning Man photographers, Sidney Erthal and Scott London, an introduction from Burning Man founder Larry Harvey, and a foreword from Will Chase, this stunning gift book allows Burners and enthusiasts alike to have a piece of Burning Man with them all year around. A Troublesome Subject: The Art Of Robert Arnesonby: Jonathan Fineberg

A Troublesome Subject: The Art Of Robert Arneson
by: Jonathan Fineberg

Hardcover. Berkeley/Los Angeles, University of California Press, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 270 pages in color and b&w. The first major book to consider the life and work of Robert Arneson, A Troublesome Subject tells the fascinating story of how a high school art teacher transformed himself into an artist of international stature and ambition. Representing the full scope of Arneson's career in a rich survey of color reproductions, this book is at once a study of the trajectory of contemporary culture, the work of Robert Arneson, and the relationship between the two. It shows how Arneson's work articulated the crisis of narcissism that has defined American culture since 1970. Jonathan Fineberg develops his ongoing work toward a psychosocial history of art as he proceeds through Arneson's career-chronicling his early life, the formation of a personal style, and finding a unique subject matter in his famous post-1970 turn to self-portraiture. Jamey Stillings: The Evolution of Ivanpah Solarby: Jamey Stillings , Anne Tucker, et al.

Jamey Stillings: The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar
by: Jamey Stillings , Anne Tucker, et al.

Hardcover. Steidl, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 148 pages. In this new monograph, Jamey Stillings (born 1955) synthesizes environmental interests with his longstanding fascination with the intersections of nature and human activity. In October 2010, Stillings began a three-and-a-half-year aerial exploration over what has become the world's largest concentrated solar power plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in the Mojave Desert of California. From the simple and stark terrain of the preconstruction landscape to the angular forms of the completed solar plant producing 392 megawatts of electricity on 14 square kilometers of public land, Stillings explores dynamic interactions between raw organic forms of nature and those defined by the project's precise geometric lines. Shot from a helicopter during first and last light, Stillings' black-and-white images intrigue with tight abstractions, oblique views of geologic and geometric forms, and broad open views of the dramatic desert basin.

Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics 1928-1930 by: Cliff Sterrett (Author, Cover Design, Artist)

Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics 1928-1930
by: Cliff Sterrett (Author, Cover Design, Artist)

Hardcover. San Diego CA , IDW Publishing, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. Extensive color illustrations by Cliff Sterrett throughout. Clean, unmarked copy. Sterrett whimsically played with every element of his feature, and was blissfully free of self-conciousness or restraint. Like all truly great comedians, he often recruits the reader, and lets them in on the gag as it plays out, while the actual characters are clueless. It's a deceptively complicated comedic gift. Other times its pure slapstick, with the unvarnished roughness and outrageous takes that characterized the period, but it's still out laugh loud funny, and honestly, when's the last time you really laughed at a comic strip? Sterrett stretched the limits of comics with the freedom that accompanied an art form yet to deigned respectable, and he produced one of the most personally stamped features in comic strip history.

Titian Tintoretto Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice by: Frederick Ilchman et al.

Titian Tintoretto Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice
by: Frederick Ilchman et al.

Softcover. Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 315 pages. Color illustrations. For nearly four decades in the sixteenth century, the careers of Venice's three greatest painters-, Titan, Tintoretto and Veronese, overlapped, producing mutual influences and bitter rivalries that changed art history. Venice was then among Europe's richest cities, and its plentiful commissions fostered an exceptionally fertile and innovative climate. In it, the three artists, brilliant, ambitious and fiercely competitive, vied with one another for primacy, employing such new media as oil on canvas, with its unique expressive possibilities, and such new approaches as a personal and identifiable signature style. They also pioneered the use of easel painting, a newly portable format that led to unprecedented fame in their lifetimes. With more than 150 stunning examples by the three masters and their contemporaries, this volume elucidates the technical and aesthetic innovations that helped define the uniquely rich "Venetian style," as well as the social, political and economic context in which it flourished. Essays range from examinations of seminal new techniques to such crucial institutions as state commissions and the patronage system. Most of all, by concentrating on the lives and careers of Venice's three greatest painters, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese paints a vibrant human portrait--one brimming with savage rivalry, one-upmanship, humor and passion. The Downtown Pop Underground takes a kaleidoscopic tour of Manhattan during this era and shows how deeply interconnected all the alternative worlds and personalities were that flourished in the basement theaters, dive bars, concert halls, and dingy tenements within one square mile of each other. Author Kembrew McLeod links the artists, writers, and performers who created change, and while some of them didn't become everyday names, others, like Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, and Debbie Harry, did become icons. Ambitious in scope and scale, the book is fueled by the actual voices of many of the key characters who broke down the entrenched divisions between high and low, gay and straight, and art and commerce -- and changed the cultural landscape of not just the city but the world.

Reason and Folly: The Prints of Francisco Goya by: Heckes, Frank

Reason and Folly: The Prints of Francisco Goya
by: Heckes, Frank

Softcover. Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, profusely illustrated in b&w. The great Francesco Goya was pivotal to the development of European art. His engagement with dreams and fantasy link him to the Romantic era while his skeptical view of society, his questioning of the strictures of the Church and State, reflect Enlightenment attitudes familiar to contemporary viewers. His humane and shocking portrayal and denunciation of war still evokes an understanding and immediate response. This publication looks at the motivations of his art, to shine the light of Reason on human relations, and explores his patrons, his career and the times in which he lived. Clean, bright copy.

Sybil & Cyril: Cutting Through Time by: Jenny Uglow

Sybil & Cyril: Cutting Through Time
by: Jenny Uglow

Softcover. NY, Picador/Farrar Straus Giroux, 1st US, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 398 pages, Illustrated in color and b&w. In 1922, Cyril Power, a fifty-year-old architect, left his family to work with the twenty-four-year-old Sybil Andrews. They would be together for twenty years. Both became famous for their dynamic, modernist linocuts-streamlined, full of movement and brilliant color, summing up the hectic interwar years. Yet at the same time, they looked back to medieval myths and early music, to country ways that were disappearing from sight. Jenny Uglow's Sybil & Cyril: Cutting Through Time traces their struggles and triumphs, conflicts and dreams, following them from Suffolk to London, from the New Forest to Vancouver Island. This is a world of futurists, surrealists, and pioneering abstraction, but also of the buzz of the new, of machines and speed, of shops and sport and dance, shining against the threat of depression and looming shadows of war. Remainder dot to top edge otherwise like new.
