Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 112 pages. The "nasty, negative, misanthropic" comic genius proves he has a sweet side.Cute little kittens, angels, and babies? Flowers, ice cream cones, and German boy bands? Coming from, supposedly, the creepiest and most pessimistic artist of his generation? Yes indeed, there is a "sweeter side" to R. Crumb. These delectable illustrations-whether depicting Bernie the Cat pawing for his master's affection, the timeworn beauty of a French village cul-de-sac, or a quiet night chez Crumb-wonderfully exemplify the many tender moments that have, until now, played second fiddle to the cult icon's more raunchy sketches. Now Crumb harkens back to his humble American beginnings as a Cleveland greeting card illustrator, when his innate knack for the grotesque had to be suppressed for the perennial appeal of "cute." The result is this cheery and blue-skied world, where readers of every conceivable personality type, age group, even sexual persuasion can finally enjoy the artist's momentary lapse from naughty to nice. Color and black-and-white illustrations throughout

In 1935, when the influential New York collector Julien Levy conceived the exhibition Documentary and Anti-Graphic Photographs by Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans & Alvarez Bravo, no one could imagine the eminent place this trio would come to occupy in the avant garde of their time, nor the immense influence they would have on future generations of photographers. Collected here for the first time since the famous 1935 exhibition, this treasure of images by three great masters of twentieth-century photography places us face to face with the history of the medium in the making. The show was one of the first exhibitions Henri Cartier-Bresson ever had, and this book is the last project he considered before his death in 2004.

It was estimated in the 1920s that one out of four homes in America had one of Parrish's make-believe illustrations on the wall, and he remains one of our best-loved illustrators. This unique work, a celebration of "Parrish Blue" water and skies, hued hills, and young women draped in classical garments, is the result of a 1995 traveling exhibit, "Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective." The Cutlers, he an architect and she a gallery owner, were instrumental in working with the Parrish Family Trust to put together that international exhibit to commemorate the artist's 125th birthday. The Cutlers were able to locate numerous items in private collections for the exhibit. Many of the 130 color plates are of these works, never reproduced before, while better-known pieces are lavishly reproduced from the original paintings rather than prints. The Parrish family offered rare photos for the biographical text, which is supplemented with a reminiscence by granddaughter Joanna Maxfield Parrish.

An examination of the pioneering Caribbean and Latin American artists who resided in New York prior to WWII and shaped the American avant-garde Between 1900 and 1942, New York City was the site of extraordinary creative exchange where artists could share ideas in a global context. The swiftly changing urban landscape before and between the World Wars inspired the erosion of artistic boundaries and fostered a new climate of modernist experimentation. Nexus New Yorkfocuses on key artists from the Caribbean and Latin America who entered into dynamic cultural and social dialogues with the American-based avant-garde and participated in the development of a new modern discourse. Featuring both celebrated and little-known figures of this period, including Carlos Enriquez, Alice Neel, Marius de Zayas, Francis Picabia, Joaquin Torres-Garcia,Jose Clemente Orozco, Matta, and Robert Motherwell, contributing authors also discuss the specific environments in which they flourished, including the Art Students League, the Siqueiros Experimental Workshop, and the New School for Social Research. A fascinating look at 20th-century modernism, this book provides the first view of the important encounters between artists of the Americas.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin's work has graced the walls and pages of some of the world's finest galleries and fashion magazines, and if it is surprising that their photographs easily float between these worlds, it is by virtue of their ease in creating imagery that seeks homes in both culturally elite and mainstream outlets. For some of their photographs, such as their portrait of Bjork or campaign for Givenchy, van Lamsweerde and Matadin have worked in collaboration with the art directors M/M (Paris), who have also designed this retrospective that looks back at pretty much everything? that the photographers have been working on for over two decades and that has brought them to the forefront in the fields of both art and fashion. 702 pages. 11 x 11 inches.

Hardcover. Library of American Comics, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Oblong hardcover, 336 pages. In Alley Oop, Hamlin created a unique concept, marrying his fascination with dinosaurs and prehistoric times to a rollicking style of storytelling and drawing that was simultaneously serious, fantastic, and loaded with slapstick. The series was set in the kingdom of Moo and starred Alley Oop, the club-wielding caveman, his girlfriend Ooola, friends Dinny the dinosaur and Foozy (who speaks in rhyme), plus Oop's rival, King Guz, and Guz's Queen Umpateedle. Yet Hamlin knew that the strip's horizons in Moo were limited. So it was, in early 1939, that Alley Oop and Ooola see a mysterious box and, to the utter amazement of Guz and his minions, promptly fade from view, followed by the caption: "Dear Reader: you must now say goodbye to Moo...if you are to follow Alley Oop in this strangest of many strange adventures. --V. T. Hamlin". Oop and Ooola had entered a time machine and were now living in the modern-day 20th Century! Their host was the inventor of the time machine, Dr. Elbert Wonmug! No change of such magnitude had ever occurred in a continuing newspaper strip, and readers responded enthusiastically. With every time period in history available as a backdrop, Alley Oop became even more popular. This volume features Oop's final Moo adventure, followed by his trips to the 20th Century and ancient Greece, where he and Ooola share adventures with brave Ulysses, the lovely Helen of Troy, and the mighty Hercules. V.T. Hamlin would send his characters everywhere and everywhen--but the classic Alley Oop begins with the stories contained in this volume. The book is introduced by Michael T. Price, who first met V. T. Hamlin in the 1960s and remained friendly with him for the rest of the cartoonist's life. Price also composed the musical score for Hip Pocket Theatre's production, Alley Oop.
