Expelled from the Motherland The Government of President Jose Antonio Agirre in Exile, 1937-1960
by: Irujo, Xabier

Hardcover. Reno, Center for Basque Studies, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 333 pages, b&w photos. Black illustrated boards, no dust jacket. Light bumping to corners, else a clean, tight copy. his story--that of the government-in-exile of Lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre and the multitudes of other Basques who were forced by war and oppression to flee their homeland--has not been written in English before and is rather unknown to the Basque, Spanish, and French historiography. Drawing on primary sources; archival documentation; and interviews with many Basque political exiles, resistance members, and former prisoners of labor camps Professor Xabier Irujo tells a gripping story of the Basque autonomous government, conceived during the beginnings of a bloody civil war, forced to organize a mass exile and then overtaken by necessity to feed and clothe its exiled population. Following this initial period, the exiled Basques were then confronted by World War and forced again into flight, this time mainly to the Americas. Never giving up their opposition to the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the government continued its struggle during forty long years of existence, through wars hot and cold as well as countless political developments. While tracing the history of Lehendakari Agirre, this book is more the story of all of the Basques who were forced into exile, and it serves as a testimony to their unwavering determination to return to their homeland. In addition, the book contains an extensive biographical index of many of the heretofore unknown exile activists: writers, politicians, soldiers, intellectuals, but even more so, Basque patriots.

Eye to I: An Autobiography of a Photographer
by: Blumenfeld, Erwin

Hardcover. London, Thames and Hudson, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 384 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, tight copy with black and white photographs throughout. Light wear ton dust jacket. The life of Erwin Blumenfeld, one of the century's best-known photographers, was by no means conventional. By turns acerbic, self-mocking, playful, even absurd, his autobiography is a compelling, virtuoso account of an extraordinary man. All his subjects--his Jewish family, the Germans, the Vichy French, his models, New York publishers--are dealt equal measures of wit, mockery, and merciless irony. He spares himself least of all. Born in turn-of-the-century Berlin, Blumenfeld was drafted to serve in the First World War, first as an ambulance driver (although he couldn't drive) and then as a bookkeeper in a field brothel, and he was awarded the Iron Cross for giving his sergeant French lessons. Between the wars he was part of an avant-garde circle that included such artists as Else Lasker-Schler, George Grosz, and members of the Dada movement. During the Second World War, Blumenfeld was interned in a series of French camps but eventually arrived in New York, where he found work with Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, producing many of their most memorable covers and becoming fashion's highest-paid photographer. From the creator of some of the most striking and influential photographs ever taken, Blumenfeld's autobiography--published here in English for the first time--is a biting and iconoclastic take on the century, and the insightful, gripping story of an exceptional life. Remainder line to bottom edge.

Faith and the Good Thing
by: Johnson, Charles

Hardcover. New York, Viking Press, 1st, 1974, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 196 pages. Publisher's release and photo of author laid in. Foxing to top edge. Spine slightly cocked. Else a very clean, tight copy. The author's first work of fiction and his second book to be published (the first being a philosophical work published 1988 under the title "Being and Race: Black Writing Since 1970"). Writing of this debut Novel in the New York Times, Anne Gotlieb stated "This is a strange and often wonderful hybrid -- an ebullient philosophical novel in the form of a folktale-cum-black girl's odyssey. It is a book bubbling like a conjure woman's kettle with African lore, preserved intact in the half-magical, half-demeaning world of Hatten County, Georgia."

Falasha Anthology: The Black Jews of Ethiopia
by: Wolf Leslau

Softcover. NY, Schocken Books, reprint, 1969, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 222 pages, b&w illustrations. The Falashas, who are the most isolated and most ancient Jewish community extant, have preserved their own religious writings through the centuries. No one knows for certain how Judaism reached this part of Africa. They observe the Sabbath as indicated in the Torah, eat only kosher food, pray in straw-roofed synagogues, and use only unleavened bread during the seven days of Passover. This book offers a cross section of their sacred literature, translated for the first time into English from Ethiopic sources. In addition, the translator provides a detailed description of the life and mores of the Falashas, based on his personal experience and observation during a prolonged stay in their community. Clean copy.
