David Lean: A Biography
by: Brownlow, Kevin

Hardcover. London, Richard Cohen Books, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn, unclipped dust jacket. Monumental biography and critical study, 810 pages, 200+ photographs, 16 pages in color. Kevin Brownlow, a film editor in his own right and author of the seminal silent film trilogy initiated with The Parade's Gone By. . ., brings to Lean's biography an exhaustive knowledge of the art and the industry. The life and its biographer provide a landmark work on the cinema. Emerging from a childhood of nearly Dickensian darkness, David Lean found his great success as a director of the appropriately titled Great Expectations. There followed his legendary black-and-white films of the 1940s and his four-film movie collaboration with Noel Coward. Lean's 1955 film Summertime took him from England to the world of international moviemaking and the stunning series of spectacular color epics that would gain for his work twenty-seven Academy Awards and fifty-six Academy Award nominations. All are classics, including The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and A Passage to India. Ownership name on half-title page, otherwise clean.

Dead Father, The
by: Barthelme, Donald

Hardcover. New York, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1st, 1975, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 177 pages. Black cloth, silver lettering to spine. Top edge cosmetic stain. Slight wear and small tears to dust jacket, minor foxing to top edge, else a very nice, tight copy. At the open we have 22 people, some Biblical while some are clearly not even representative, literally dragging God, not quite dead, through various roads, countryside, and towns in order to reach the plot in which He will be buried. Of course, it does not matter that He is dead when they reach their destination. The novel is one of Barthelme's more powerful tales and, as always, full of humor. One cannot read this without thinking that the Monty Python crew was somewhat influenced by this work, philosophically as well as from a creative standpoint. The one surprising footnote to this work is that it is a rather easy read,

Deathly Still: Pictures of Concentration Camps
by: Dirk Reinartz. Christian Graf von Krockow.

Hardcover. Scalo, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 308 pages. In 1987 Dirk Reinartz set out on his sad itinerary: Dachau, Auschwitz, Ravensbruck, Treblinka. The list goes on. Seven years later he compiled this series of 200 black-and-white photographs of the 24 ruins of the death camps. In 279 chilly, gray photographs taken at 25 different Nazi concentration camps, Reinartz successfully portrays the very purpose--death--of these horrific places. In the photographs, no figure intrudes on the stark emptiness and brutal orderliness of the camps' architecture. The photographs are carefully composed, and their tonal range deliberately compressed, so that there is no brightness in them, only shades of gray. Nor is there any shred of sentiment, only emptiness and silence. In his text, Krockow contrasts the truth of the pictures and the superficial, "amusement park" ambiance that greets actual visitors to the camps today. He meditates as well on the failings of the human mind that allowed the power to kill to go unchecked. Disturbing photographs, thoughtful text. Clean copy.
