Extensive research done by photo historian Johan Swinnen resulted in the rediscovery of much hitherto unknown archival material of significant photographic-historical value created by these two strong female photographic pioneers.

Brassai (1899-1984) was the first and is still the most famous photographer to chronicle Paris after dark. Born in Hungary, he came to the French capital in 1924, working first as a journalist and then embracing photography, but it was the Paris of the 1930s that forms the bedrock of his body of work. Though the artist is best known for his seminal photobook The Americans (1959) and his experimental film Pull My Daisy (1959), until this publication, little scholarship existed on the intersection between Frank's work in the disciplines of photography and film. Hold Still, Keep Going fills that void, exploring the influence of film on Frank's photographic work, and the interaction between the still and moving image that has engaged the photographer and experimental filmmaker since the late 1950s. "In 1941 Frank Kessler, a young accountant in Canton, Ohio, was drafted, assigned to an Army Signal Corps unit, and went away to photograph the war in Europe. In 1945, home again with his wife and children, he stored hundreds of those images of blood and battle in his attic. There they stayed until after his death."Then Lee Kessler, Frank's estranged younger brother, sorted through boxes seeking to better know a brother he'd never known very well. A flier who had been shot down and held in a German POW camp, Lee saw Frank's photographs as images of a different side of war, one he never experienced. He was moved by what he saw and recognized their importance. He preserved them for all of us, carefully ordering them into albums and typing the information Frank had written on the backs of the photos. In 1918, August Sander meticulously photographed the defeated citizenry of Germany who needed photo identification cards for the occupying forces. By 1929 he had photographed all classes and types of people. During this time, Sander came under the influence of modern art and its intellectual practitioners whom he befriended in Cologne. Through his discussions with them he came to understand the importance of his portrait work and was encouraged to continue. He produced the first volume of an extended series he hoped would provide an exhaustive catalogue, but in the 1930s his work fell into disfavor and was banned by the Nazis.
