Klondike Quest, The: A Photographic Essay 1897-1899by: Berton, Pierre

Klondike Quest, The: A Photographic Essay 1897-1899
by: Berton, Pierre

Hardcover. Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 239 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Black and white pictures throughout. Clean, tight copy. More than 10,000 images reside in public archives and private collections, depicting every aspect of what popular historian Pierre Berton has called "one of the strangest mass movements in history." For this book, Berton selected 200 photographs, some iconic, some touchingly personal, and most previously unpublished. The Klondike Quest brings to life the panoramic drama of the great stampede for gold as seen by the ordinary gold-seeker. The photographs are beautifully reproduced and informatively and colorfully captioned. "One million people, it is said, laid plans to go to the Klondike. One hundred thousand actually set off. And so the Klondike saga is a chronicle of humanity in the mass.... For the next eighteen months, the Yukon interior plateau became a human anthill."

Werner Bischof. 1916 - 1954. His Life and Work. Introduction by Hugo Loetscher. Text by Marco Bischof and Guido Magnaguagno.
by: Bischof, Marco and Ren

Hardcover. New York , Thames & Hudson, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 255 pages, clean hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. B&w photographs throughout by Bischof. His images were influenced by the major photo-movements of his time: the formal concepts of Das Neues Sehen (New Vision), the surrealism of Man Ray, and the documentary tradition of photojournalism. From the 1940s through the early 1950s, he covered World War II, the bombing of Hiroshima, and the Korean War for Life , Paris-Match , and other publications; his most famous series, "Famine in India," appeared in Life in 1951. This first major compilation of Bischof's work is nicely complemented by the text, a joint effort by son Marco and Swiss art historian Magnaguagno that vividly integrates biography and history.

Larry Fink
by: Laurie Dahlberg

Softcover. NY, Phaidon Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, 55 photos. Born in 1941, Larry Fink was a teenager in the 1950s in an America on the cusp of radical social change. Growing up on Long Island in New York, Larry Fink was disinterested in the consumer-driven culture of 1950s' America. A disaffected teenager, his parents transferred him to art school where his career as a photographer began to flourish. His parents were supportive of his interest in the arts, and Fink would later drop out of college to join a circle of artists living in Greenwich Village. Fink spent the 1960s watching and learning from the prominent photographers of the time: Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith, and in many ways, his photographic aesthetic and rebellious spirit encapsulate the dramatic lose of innocence that the US underwent after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. photographic mentor.

Band of Bikers 1962/1972by: Scott Zieher

Band of Bikers 1962/1972
by: Scott Zieher

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 108 pages. In the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan, Scott Zieher discovered a pile of photographs among the effects of a recently deceased tenant. These photographs, presented for the first time in Band of Bikers, offer an intimate portrait of a group of gay bikers in the city and the woods, and a touching snapshot of an entire generation at it's carefree zenith. Newly aware of muscle and biker magazines and their heavy-handed eroticism, photographer and photographed brimwith a subtly vibrant, chromatic pride. The photographs as a whole bring into focus a brief, specific period of relative innocence, when middle-of-the-road Americans more often than not failed to perceive the homoerotic undertones of their most heterosexual of institutions. With conceptual light cast by issues ranging from anonymity in homosexuality and underground motorcycle chic, to vernacular photography's pop-culture ramifications, a warm and generous spirit of camaraderie pervades this subterranean survey. Like a real-world set forScorpio Rising casually captured byan unpretentious extra, presented as Band of Bikers and accompanied by an essay by Zieher, this found cache of old-school, leather party snapshots attains archeological significance.

David Armstrong: All Day Every Dayby: Armstrong, David

David Armstrong: All Day Every Day
by: Armstrong, David

Hardcover. Scalo, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages, 85 color images. Beauty was never a dirty word for David Armstrong. Untroubled by others' puritan fears of sensuality or by the follies of this or that zeitgeist, Armstrong has long pursued his twin vision of urban romance and bucolic serenity. All Day Every Day presents the artist's landscapes, interiors, and cityscapes, wistful and evocative images that discreetly suggest stories of love and loss, that bespeak the solitary pleasures of a flaneur adrift on urban streets and rural roads. A street corner, the facade of a skyscraper, blossoming trees, a chair in a room on a late afternoon: these are the elusive quotidian promises of happiness that Armstrong so elegantly captures, generously inviting viewers to interweave their own desires and reveries with his intricately languid images. Underlying Armstrong's radical aesthetic, we sense the utopian fervor of a revolt against utilitarianism, dogmatic narrow-mindedness, and the stifling fear of the senses and the body that still pervades our culture.

Congo on the Road
by: Turconi, Angelo

Hardcover. Stichting Kunstboak , 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 240 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Duel language French-English. Angelo Turconi, traveler and photographer in Africa, shares his remarkable images of everyday life in Congo. Congo on the Road is the result of many journeys in this multifaceted country and documents his encounters along the road: the Yaka chief in ceremonial dress, the chief of the Pende and Chokwe in prestigious attire, the Emperor of the Lunda on his throne, a family photo of the Kitawala sect. Turconi's photographs testify of a deep respect for the ones captured by the lens. We experience daily life as it is, with its deprivation and many struggles, nonetheless Angelo Turconi highlights the courage and joy of people and their endless ingenuity and creativity in overcoming obstacles. The beautiful and diverse scenery is as evocative as poetry. It opens the heart and fills it with admiration, memories and - for those that had the chance to experience life in deep central Africa - even nostalgia.

Lost and Found in America
by: Lenny Gottlieb

Hardcover. London, Dewi Lewis, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 160 pages. These photographs--rejects found at a commercial photolab in the States--were taken at the time of the Vietnam War--a pivotal period in American history. Here is the intimacy that danced in the eyes of family photographers as they framed everyday life--as it was in the fall of 1968. The images, predominantly prints from early 126mm point-and-shoot cameras, are an uninterpreted presentation of everyday life. Reflecting both private and public spheres of consciousness, they convey unmediated perspectives of mores, values and icons through what was intended to be personal visual documentation in its most direct form. No dj issued.

Magnum Photos: Georgian Spring-A Magnum Journalby: Wendell Steavenson

Magnum Photos: Georgian Spring-A Magnum Journal
by: Wendell Steavenson

Hardcover. London, Chris Boot, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 252 pages. In this volume, ten Magnum photographers turn their lenses on contemporary Georgia. Situated on the cusp of Russia and Asia, but with a European culture dating back to the 7th century BC, Georgia was forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1922. Its independence was restored in 1991, but it then suffered from civil war and a breakdown of its economic infrastructure. In the last decade, however, despite ongoing tensions in its relations with Russia, Georgia has mounted a spirited comeback. Magnum photographers Antoine d'Agata, Jonas Bendiksen, Thomas Dworzak, Martine Franck, Alex Majoli, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Mark Power and Alec Soth visited the country during spring 2009, each pursuing their own theme (Alec Soth goes in search of the 'most beautiful woman in Georgia', for example). All found themselves enchanted by the Georgian people, something strongly conveyed in their photographs as well as in personal text journals which accompany the images. This well-designed volume also includes a fold-out map, marked with each photographer's journey; a chapter showing the best of Magnum photographers' work over 60 years (including by Magnum's founders Robert Capa from his visit to Georgia with John Steinbeck in 1948 and Henri Cartier-Bresson); and an illuminating introduction by the Paris-based New Yorker writer, and Georgia expert, Wendell Steavenson.

Errand of the Eye, The: Photographs by Rose Mandel
by: Ehrens, Susan

Hardcover. US, Prestel, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 128 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The first publication dedicated to Rose Mandel, a pioneering woman in photography, introduces her remarkable, if often overlooked, body of work to a wider audience. Born in Poland, Rose Mandel immigrated to California in 1942. A love of photography soon brought her into contact with Edward Weston, and then with Ansel Adams and Minor White, both of whom had a strong influence on Mandel's work. Including her important sequence The Errand of the Eye, this book presents the sensitivity and clarity of Mandel's vision. Images from natural and man-made environments, eloquent portraits, and abstract landscapes convey Mandel's delight in the compositions and patterns that can be found anywhere, whether walking along a city street or a country path. These photographs are the result of a highly refined sense of craftsmanship and a complex understanding of psychology and abstract expressionism that caused Mandel to be described as "a painter with a camera." The first monograph on the artist, this volume features an enlightening overview of Mandel's life and work, along with an illustrated chronology and exhibition history.

People who cross onto the sand become a little naked. To this equation of vulnerability, the two photographers add unforgiving strobe lights and a ruthless high resolution camera.

Hans Namuth Portraitsby: Carr, Carolyn Kinder

Hans Namuth Portraits
by: Carr, Carolyn Kinder

Washington. DC, Smithsonian, 1st , 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 75 portraits of artists in black & white and color by Namuth. 166 pages. Accompanied by a biographical essay by Carolyn Kinder Carr, this collection of seventy-five of Hans Namuth's photographic portraits, taken between 1950 and 1989, shows how his friendships with his often reclusive subjects and his determination to capture the essence of each artist's style resulted in revealing portraits of such notable painters as Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Andrew Wyeth, Helen Frankenthaler, and Andy Warhol. Although Namuth identified most closely with the Abstract Expressionists who became famous in the 1950s and early 1960s, his repertoire included a new generation of 1980s artists, among them Julian Schnabel and David Salle. In both his black-and-white and color photographs, Namuth used subtle but telling poses, settings, and details: John Steinbeck appears with his famous dog Charley; Philip Johnson stands jauntily on a staircase in the Museum of Modern Art beside a painting that he donated; Louise Nevelson wears jewelry that echoes the sweeping lines of her wood sculpture.

Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping Fremont's Last Expedition Through the Rockies by: Shlaer, Robert

Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping Fremont's Last Expedition Through the Rockies
by: Shlaer, Robert

Hardcover. Santa Fe NM, Museum of New Mexico Press, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 165 pages. Little is known about the fifth and last western expedition of the celebrated explorer John Charles Frmont. The great effort to survey a transcontinental railway route across the 38th parallel ended short of success in the snows of Utah in 1854 but involved a meticulous photographic documentation-in daguerreotypes-of the route from the Mississippi westward. It was believed that a central railroad across the country would favor abolitionists in the great debate then raging in the country over slavery. Solomon Nunes Carvalho was hired by Frmont to photograph the expedition-the first time a western expeditionary survey had been systematically documented in photographs. Tragically, the daguerreotypes were destroyed by fire, and Fremont's fifth expedition was lost to history. Author and daguerreotypist Robert Shlaer remarkably has reconstructed the expedition in 120 original daguerreotypes. Using Frmont's maps, expedition documents, and Carvalho's diary accounts, Shlaer recreates the lost expedition across America's most breathtaking landscape using photography's first and most venerable method of daguerreotypy.

Sleeping with Ghosts: A Life's Work in Photographyby: MCCULLIN, DON

Sleeping with Ghosts: A Life's Work in Photography
by: MCCULLIN, DON

Hardcover. New York , Aperture Book, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 207 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Light yellowing to edges and light shelf-wear to dust jacket, else a clean, tight copy. This book shows the life's work of one of the most brilliant photojournalists of our time, who raised the status of his craft to that of high art. In his bestselling autobiography, Unreasonable Behavior, Don McCullin told the extraordinary and sometimes harrowing story of how he grew up in north London's gangland and graduated from poverty to stardom as the most daring and self-sacrificing reporter of wars around the world - from Cyprus to Israel, the Congo and Biafra to Vietnam, Pakistan to Cambodia, Beirut to Iraq. But his interests go far beyond the battleground in all its degradation which he has captured so brilliantly. In this book he has collected some 200 of what he considers to be his best pictures. A few have become well-known icons, many have not been seen in a book before. They depict unemployed miners collecting coal from the beach at dawn, down-and-outs in the East End, the homeless in Bradford, but they also reveal a passion for landscape, especially in the mysterious light of India, and a moving contact between human beings in a harsh environment.
