Despite Prohibition, the '20s was the decade of jazz, flappers and hip flasks. While some took their vote and joined the Woman's Christian Temperance Movement, others, well, took liberties. Compiled here for the first time are more than 200 publicity stills and photos of some of America's first "It" girls--the silent film-era starlets who paved the way for the cacophony of Monroes and Madonnas to follow. When rare and striking portraits of these women surfaced on the internet in 1995, author Robert Hudovernik began researching their source. What he discovered was the work of one of the first "star makers" identified most with the Ziegfeld Follies, Alfred Cheney Johnston. Johnston, a member of New York's famous Algonquin Round Table who photographed such celebrities as Mary Pickford, Fanny Brice, the Gish Sisters, and Louise Brooks, fell out of the spotlight with the demise of the revue. Haunts is the second book in a trilogy that began with Trying to Dance, in which Engstrom writes, "I'm always looking for presence. Whenever I try, my doubts get unmasked..." These doubts and questions are prevalent in Haunts as well, but in this volume Engstrom focuses more on public spaces and life in the streets. At the center of these pictures is a strong feeling of being in an endless present tense. The confrontation between "now" and the photographer's memories is inevitable. He doesn't try to separate emotions from objectivity: his images embody their questions.

Mary Ellen Mark fell in love with the Indian circus in 1969, during her first trip to India. As she watched a huge hippopotamus walk around the ring with its mouth wide open, wearing a pink tutu, she was struck by the beauty and innocence of the show. She returned to India many times, and in 1989 and 1990 she devoted six months to photographing eighteen circuses, following them around the continent by train, plane, van, and auto-rickshaw. Secretive, highly competitive, and each a closed, self-sufficient society, the circuses embody what Mark calls "a poetry and a craziness that are still uncorrupted, and honest, and pure." During the 1950s and 60s, Tom Palumbo was part of an influential group of young photographers working for the best fashion magazines in America -Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. Tom perfected his craft under the guidance of legends like Alexey Brodovitch, Carmel Snow, Diana Vreeland, and Alex Liberman. Tom's serene style contrasted with Richard Avedon's jazzed-up images and Lillian Bassman's soft blurred effects. Often Tom's particular layouts provided the balance in an issue. Sanford Roth (d. 1962) quit an executive position in 1946 to pursue photography in Paris. His wife's anecdotal essay recalls their experiences photographing figures in the arts, including Colette, Picasso, Cocteau, and Stravinsky. Roth later became photographer to the film industry and made portraits of James Dean, Ava Gardner, and dozens of others. His photographs, which appeared in Life , Paris-Match , etc., are photojournalistic and new to today's audience.
