Chuck Close: A Couple of Ways of Doing Somethingby: Close, Chuck (Artist) Bob Holman , et al.

Chuck Close: A Couple of Ways of Doing Something
by: Close, Chuck (Artist) Bob Holman , et al.

Hardcover. New York, Aperture, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 56 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. A Couple of Ways of Doing Something replicates a deluxe limited-edition portfolio whose initial run was only 75 copies. This clothbound edition preserves the luxurious sensibility of the original with 22 extraordinary oversized daguerreotypes printed in rich tritone. Working with daguerreotype master Jerry Spagnoli to conquer the complexities of this venerable process, which yields images of astonishing detail and gravity, Chuck Close photographed many of the same artist-friends who have made regular appearances in his paintings over the years: Laurie Anderson, Lyle Ashton Harris, Cecily Brown, Gregory Crewdson, Carroll Dunham, Ellen Gallagher, Philip Glass, Bob Holman, Elizabeth Murray, Elizabeth Peyton, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, James Siena, Lorna Simpson, Kiki Smith, James Turrell, Robert Wilson, Terry Winters, Lisa Yuskavage and himself. Each image is complemented by a poem on its subject by Bob Holman, the celebrated and widely published New York School poet who originated and hosted the famous Poetry Slams at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and now runs the Bowery Poetry Club. With the counterpoint of Holman's engaging poetry, the collected work becomes a transfixing group portrait of Close's influential and highly creative circle of friends and colleagues, as well as an exploration of a challenging photographic medium.

Photography in Boston: 1955-1985by: Nagler, Gillian (Editor)/Rachel Rosenfield Lafo

Photography in Boston: 1955-1985
by: Nagler, Gillian (Editor)/Rachel Rosenfield Lafo

Hardcover. US, The MIT Press, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Remainder mark on top page block. Boston played a crucial role in the development of American photography, including criticism, collecting, and curating, in the second half of the twentieth century. This book accompanies a landmark exhibition at the DeCordova Museum that includes such important American artists as Berenice Abbott, Harry Callahan, Paul Caponigro, Marie Cosindas, Harold Edgerton, Nan Goldin, Jerome Liebling, Nicholas Nixon, Barbara Norfleet, Olivia Parker, Rosamond Purcell, Aaron Siskind, and Minor White. The period from 1955 to 1985 reflects photography's acceptance as an art form, the influence of modernism, and the coalescence of a unique constellation of educational institutions, museums, and technological development in the Boston area that directly influenced artistic options for photography. Minor White's arrival at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 to run the Center for Creative Photography and the Polaroid Corporation's innovative support of photographic art suggest how developments built upon one another to create a regional critical mass in photography. The book contains twenty-five color plates, sixty duotones, and essays by A. D. Coleman, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, and Kim Sichel.

Barns of the North Forkby: Spencer, Mary Ann

Barns of the North Fork
by: Spencer, Mary Ann

Hardcover. New York , Quantuck Lane, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages, color photographs. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The North Fork is the roughly sixty-mile-long spit of New York's Long Island that runs from Riverhead to Orient Point. With the fairly well protected Long Island Sound on the North and Peconic Bay on the South, it was a logical place for some of the earliest English immigrants to settle and build barns. It is still home to more working farms than any other part of the island. And from the timber-frame barns of the British farmers of the seventeenth century to the pole barns of the twentieth, the variety is stunning. In a survey sponsored by the Old House Society in Cutchogue, Mary Ann Spencer spent the last few years making a comprehensive inventory and photographing more than six hundred barns on the North Fork. Two hundred of them are still in use, although their fate is by no means certain. Here in their glory (and sometimes less than that) are the most interesting barns, which reveal, among other things, their functional development, their often haphazard fenestration, their soft patina of age, and their fit in the landscape. Spencer's complete survey forms a second part of this book, which provokes feelings of nostalgia and raises our fears for the future of these wonderful structures. More than 150 color photographs.

Prom
by: Mark, Mary Ellen

Hardcover. Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 164 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The high school prom is an American tradition, a rite of passage, and one of the most important rituals of youth in this country. The internationally recognized documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark took on the extraordinary challenge of working with the Polaroid 20x24 Land camera to produce this fascinating look at dozens of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds on this memorable night in their lives. Traveling across the United States to complete the project from 2006 to 2009, Mark photographed prom-goers at thirteen schools from New York City to Charlottesville, Virginia, to Houston to Los Angeles. Mark's husband, the filmmaker Martin Bell, collaborated with her on the project to produce and direct a film, also called Prom, featuring interviews with the students about their lives, dreams, and hopes for the future. A DVD of the film is packaged with the book. The 127 large-format photographs are reproduced in rich detail, and quotations from the student interviews punctuate the book. Some of the students' statements are comical, while others are deeply touching. The result is a captivating and revealing document of American youth at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

by: Freeman, Dean (Artist)

Hardcover. Damiani, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. 200 pages. FunkyTown digs into British photographer Dean Freeman's archive--it goes way beyond Beckham--to gather published and unpublished portraiture, fashion and reportage spanning three decades of youth culture, from the 1980s to the present. His star portrait subjects include Liz Hurley, Sandra Bullock, Rachel Weisz, Dennis Hopper, Harold Pinter and Guy Ritchie. But beyond glamour and stardom, beyond Freeman's understanding of and comfort with the models, pop stars and writers for whom he has been a talent scout and icon-maker, he turns out to be a sensitive observer of people and landscapes in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. On his own time, he has chronicled a richly diverse world with great humanity and wit.

Rebecca Horn: All These Black Days - Betweenby: Horn, Rebecca

Rebecca Horn: All These Black Days - Between
by: Horn, Rebecca

Hardcover. Scalo, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 160 pages. 89 color illustrations. "Postcard collages and texts by Rebecca Horn sent to Timothy Baum and friends," is the only explanation internationally known artist Rebecca Horn wanted to include in her latest book, probably her most accessible to a larger public. We do not know who Timothy Baum is. We have no idea who her friends are, nor when they received mail from this German artist, living in Berlin and Paris. We do not need to know: what Horn offers us is a revealing and, at the same time, enigmatic collection of her beautiful, often erotic, and most of all poetic, postcards. Horn presents to us a fragmented love story, told in painfully precise snapshots of lust and desire, intimate and precise, yet vague enough to be everyone's love story. By altering existing postcards, painting over them or gluing parts of different images on them, Horn creates collages that mirror life's beautiful and troubling contingencies. In what might be the artist's most personal book, Rebecca Horn presents life as a journey; we look at postcards from this journey from heaven. Or is it hell? In sharing her most intimate, most common emotional states in images and texts, Rebecca Horn creates an almost baroque dialogue between reality and the world of longing.

Tulsa
by: Clark, Larry

Softcover. NY, Grove Press, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 64 pages. When it first appeared in 1971, Larry Clark's groundbreaking book Tulsa sparked immediate controversy across the nation. Its graphic depictions of sex, violence, and drug abuse in the youth culture of Oklahoma were acclaimed by critics for stripping bare the myth that Middle America had been immune to the social convulsions that rocked America in the 1960s. The raw, haunting images taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971 document a youth culture progressively overwhelmed by self-destruction -- and are as moving and disturbing today as when they first appeared.

Sylvia Plachy: Self Portrait With Cows Going Home (Aperture Monograph S)by: Plachy, Sylvia

Sylvia Plachy: Self Portrait With Cows Going Home (Aperture Monograph S)
by: Plachy, Sylvia

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Photographer Plachy proves you can go home again and again in this stunning photographic voyage to her native Hungary. Plachy weaves together contemporary and vintage photographs, mementos and pictures of movie sets (including several from her son Adrien Brody?s Oscar-winning turn in Roman Polanski?s The Pianist). Together, these pieces come together like a puzzle, recreating an Eastern Europe that has weathered dictatorships, two world wars and is now opening up, confusedly, to democracy. The images of stray shadows, apartment buildings studded with bullet holes, and eerie reflections are as evocative as they are subtle. They remind us that great photographs don?t have to rely on shock value to move or disturb. Plachy accents her work with memorable vignettes of her childhood in Communist Hungary as well as of her repeated journeys back east as an adult and an American citizen. One of the most touching of these small stories involves the photographer?s grief-stricken mother, inconsolable after the deaths of her parents in Auschwitz. One day, while her mother stared at a framed photo of her deceased parents, she saw a gold moth land on the glass. "From then on golden butterflies and moths were sacred," writes Plachy. As the book goes on, relative after relative surrounds herself with images to bring back lost loved ones. By the book?s end, we see Plachy herself doing the same thing and realize that through this book she has invited us on a private tour of a lost world, a journey that?s as poignant as it is unforgettable. 22 four-color and 98 duotone images.

A Vanished World by: Roman Vishniac (Author, Photographer), Elie Wiesel (Foreword)

A Vanished World
by: Roman Vishniac (Author, Photographer), Elie Wiesel (Foreword)

Softcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, reprint, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 192 pages. Roman Vishniac's A Vanished World is an extraordinary record of the lives of German and Eastern European Jews in the years immediately preceding the Holocaust. Vishniac, a Russian Jew, began to take photographs of village life during World War I, when Russian Jews who lived near the front were accused of being German spies and were deported to Siberia. He later moved to Germany, where he witnessed the horrible events of Kristallnacht and the anti-Jewish legislation that allowed Hitler to declare his enemies stateless and therefore unworthy of international protection. As we study Vishniac's photographs--a surviving fraction of the more than 16,000 he took--we are aware that we are seeing the faces of those soon to die, witnessing a world that has all but perished. Yet that world, of shops and schools, of busy streets and quiet farms, remains with us if only as a ghostly memory, thanks in part to Vishniac's compassionate eye.

Millionaires, Mansions, and Motor Yachts: An Era of Opulenceby: Ross MacTaggart

Millionaires, Mansions, and Motor Yachts: An Era of Opulence
by: Ross MacTaggart

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. Through a lively text and 250 stunning duotone images (most never previously published), Millionaires, Mansions, and Motor Yachts re-creates an era of opulence and extravagance that today seems incredible. Dominating this volume are the mansions and yachts of Alfred and Jessie du Pont. Equally larger-than-life personalities include Thomas Lawson, his expansive estate, Dreamwold, and yachts such as Dreamer; empire builder John Spreckels's 227-foot Venetia; Emily Cadwalader, who commissioned a vessel destined for world renown as a U.S. presidential yacht, before checkmating this achievement by ordering the largest private yacht ever built, the 407-foot Savarona; Eugene Tompkins, the "Napoleon of Theater Managers"; George Fabyan; Harry Darlington; and William Rands. Enfolded in this volume's fascinating pages are not only the wealthy individuals who shaped this era but also curmudgeonly writer/yachtsman Thomas Fleming Day, photographer Nathaniel Stebbins, and the designers and builders who created the splendid yachts that here return to life.

Larry Fink
by: Laurie Dahlberg

Softcover. NY, Phaidon Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, 55 photos. Born in 1941, Larry Fink was a teenager in the 1950s in an America on the cusp of radical social change. Growing up on Long Island in New York, Larry Fink was disinterested in the consumer-driven culture of 1950s' America. A disaffected teenager, his parents transferred him to art school where his career as a photographer began to flourish. His parents were supportive of his interest in the arts, and Fink would later drop out of college to join a circle of artists living in Greenwich Village. Fink spent the 1960s watching and learning from the prominent photographers of the time: Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith, and in many ways, his photographic aesthetic and rebellious spirit encapsulate the dramatic lose of innocence that the US underwent after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. photographic mentor.

Shadows of War: A German Soldier's Lost Photographs of World War IIby: Petra Bopp, Willi Rose , et al.

Shadows of War: A German Soldier's Lost Photographs of World War II
by: Petra Bopp, Willi Rose , et al.

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Shadows of War presents an astonishing collection of previously unpublished, unknown photographs of life at the front lines in the German war machine during World War II, taken by a common foot soldier. The work of a gifted amateur, Willi Rose's images present a powerful vision of a largely suppressed aspect of the war. These fractured glimpses of the world at war, from quotidian tasks and moments of leisure to scenes of death and destruction, reveal one man's experience of the epic flow of history. A miller in the years before World War II, Rose was drafted into the German army in October 1939 and served as a motorbike messenger on the front, first in France and then in Russia. He was wounded twice and was later captured by the Polish army, eventually returning home in June 1946. Throughout his military service, Rose sent home photographs that he took of the action, mostly along the Eastern Front. Discovered by his widow after his death, these images form a unique photographic document of one soldier's war.

The Theatrical World of Angus McBean: Photographs from the Harvard University Theatre Collectionby: Fredric Woodbridge Wilson and Richard Traubner

The Theatrical World of Angus McBean: Photographs from the Harvard University Theatre Collection
by: Fredric Woodbridge Wilson and Richard Traubner

Hardcover. Boston, David R. Godine, 1st, 2009, Hardcover, 192 pages. The photography of Angus McBean encompasses more than three decades of the history of British theater. His work includes most of the memorable productions of the Old Vic Company and of what is now the Royal Shakespeare Company; opera productions at Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; ballet and operetta at Sadler's Wells; and West End productions of plays and musicals both old and new -- hundreds of productions in all. He was the favorite photographer of Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, and Edith Evans, and he photographed countless plays starring John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, and Alec Guinness, not to mention younger stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor. In fact, McBean photographed virtually every great actor of his era, perhaps the most brilliant years in the annals of British theater. His studio was active and eclectic; among his patrons were not only actors, singers, and dancers, but also playwrights, producers, composers, artists, and writers. In his early career, McBean had been a pioneer of surrealist photography, with a highly popular series of "surrealized" portraits that appeared in The Sketch, and, later, of montage and multiple-exposure photography in a long-running series for The Tatler. In 1969, McBean approached Harvard University to initiate the sale of his collection, and in the following year his archive of glass plate negatives, index prints, and programs, together with the copyrights, became a part of the Harvard Theatre Collection, where it remains the most often-requested collection of visual material. The photographs in this book, selected and captioned by the archive's curator, Fredric Woodbridge Wilson, have been carefully reproduced from the original negatives.

by: James Ridgeway and Sylvia Plachy

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. Sylvia Plachy, a photographer for the Village Voice, and James Ridgeway, a reporter for the same publication, have delved into the depths of the pornography trade to explore and explain both its allure and its vulgarity. There is a sense of shock value in exposing the most lurid of fantasies--a man who has his dominatrix mummify him in concrete--that is tempered with theories as to how such an industry could have evolved. We also get to meet for ourselves those in the trade, providing a walk on the wild side within the safe confines of photographs and words.
