Knickerbocker's History of New York (2 Volumes)
by: Irving, Washington

Hardcover. New York, G. P. Putnam's Sons, reprint, 1894, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Two hardcover volumes. Van Twiller Edition, with b&w illustrations by Edward W. Kemble throughout both volumes. In 1809, New Yorkers were buzzing about a series of classified ads concerning the whereabouts of Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker. They were unaware that Washington Irving had invented the man entirely and placed the ads himself. Knickerbocker's purported manuscript, A History of New York, was Irving's own. Told from Knickerbocker's point of view, A History of New York is a chronicle of New York's fifty years under Dutch rule in the 1600s that plays fast and loose with the facts, to uproarious effect. A History of New York propelled Irving to the heights of literary stardom. Gilt and blue design on beveled covers, spine. Top edge gilt, decorated pages, frontispiece with tissue guard. Slight corner bump, edge wear, age darkening to spine, otherwise, very clean and tight copies.

L.A. Raw: Abject Expressionism in Los Angeles, 1945-1980: From Rico Lebrun to Paul McCarthy
by: Duncan, Michael

Hardcover. US, Foggy Notion Books/Pasadena Museum of California Art, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 208 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to boards. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Until recently, the figurative artists who dominated the Los Angeles art scene of the 1940s and 50s had largely been written out of art history. L.A. Raw is an attempt to right that wrong. Bringing together works by 41 artists in a variety of media, it traces a lineage that connects postwar figurative expressionism to the 1960s and 70s investigations of politics, gender and ethnicity in art. The featured artists include John Altoon, Wallace Berman, William Brice, Hans Burckhardt, Chris Burden, Cameron, Judy Chicago, Connor Everts, Llyn Foulkes, Charles Garabedian, David Hammonds, Robert Heinecken, John Paul Jones, Kim Jones, Ed and Nancy Kienholz, Rico Lebrun, Paul McCarthy, Arnold Mesches, Betye Saar, Ben Sakoguchi, Barbara Smith, James Strombotne, Jan Stussy, Edward Teske, Joyce Treiman, Howard Warshaw, June Wayne, Charles White and Jack Zajac.

SIGNED BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT on a tipped-in page following the front fly leaf. This publication by Mrs. Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok came well after their days in the White House together. It tracts the activities of women in politics from Stanton to 1952 but concentrates on the 1948-1952 period where Hickok's journalistic experience would be particularly useful. Lafayette
by: Harlow Giles Unger

Softcover. NY, John Wiley & Sons, 1st pbk, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover,452 pages, b&w illustrations. Harlow Unger's Lafayette is a remarkable and dramatic account of a life as fully lived as it is possible to imagine, that of Gilbert de Motier, marquis de Lafayette. To American readers Unger's biography will provide a stark reminder of just how near run a thing was our War of Independence and the degree to which our forefathers' victory hinged on the help of our French allies, marshaled for George Washington by his 'adopted' son, Lafayette. But even more absorbing and much less well known to the general reader will be Unger's account of Lafayette's idealistic but naive efforts to plant the fruits of the American democracy he so admired in the unreceptive soil of his homeland. Short inscription to half-title page, otherwise a clean, bright copy.
