Ford Madox Brown: Pre- Raphaelite Pioneer by: Treuherz, Julian

Ford Madox Brown: Pre- Raphaelite Pioneer
by: Treuherz, Julian

Hardcover. London, Philip Wilson Publishers, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 336 pages, color and other plates, chronology, catalogue, bibliography, index. Approx. size 11" by 9". Small tape repair to verso of rear panel otherwise excellent condition. Ford Madox Brown had already pioneered a style of painting which came to be known as Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848. His beautifully observed landscapes anticipated the open-air effects of the Impressionists. His art was anti-academic, rejecting easy solutions, prettiness, and conventional Victorian formulae. He depicted children without sentimentality and poor people without condescension. This major monograph provides a general introduction to Brown's art based on new research; all of his important paintings are included, and each one is illustrated and described.

Forged: Why Fakes are the Great Art of Our Age by: Keats, Jonathon

Forged: Why Fakes are the Great Art of Our Age
by: Keats, Jonathon

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 2nd pr., 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 197 pages. Forged explores art forgery from ancient times to the present. In chapters combining lively biography with insightful art criticism, Jonathon Keats profiles individual art forgers and connects their stories to broader themes about the role of forgeries in society. From the Renaissance master Andrea del Sarto who faked a Raphael masterpiece at the request of his Medici patrons, to the Vermeer counterfeiter Han van Meegeren who duped the avaricious Hermann G?ring, to the frustrated British artist Eric Hebborn, who began forging to expose the ignorance of experts, art forgers have challenged "legitimate" art in their own time, breaching accepted practices and upsetting the status quo. They have also provocatively confronted many of the present-day cultural anxieties that are major themes in the arts. Keats uncovers what forgeries --and our reactions to them-- reveal about changing conceptions of creativity, identity, authorship, integrity, authenticity, success, and how we assign value to works of art. The book concludes by looking at how artists today have appropriated many aspects of forgery through such practices as street-art stenciling and share-and-share-alike licensing, and how these open-source "copyleft" strategies have the potential to make legitimate art meaningful again. Clean copy.

Form and Fancy: Factories and Factory Buildings by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, 1916-1939by: Skinner, Joan S.

Form and Fancy: Factories and Factory Buildings by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, 1916-1939
by: Skinner, Joan S.

Softcover. Liverpool Univeristy Press, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pages. In 1916 Thomas Wallis founded a new practice, Wallis, Gilbert & Partner, primarily to collaborate with an American company in the design of factories to be constructed of reinforced concrete. Designing factories was not then popular among architects and many manufacturers regarded the employment of an architect a wanton extravagance. Wallis's move could be seen as a reckless gamble, but his and his partners' subsequent achievements suggest that his choice had been well considered; some of the best known inter-war industrial building - Firestone, Hoover, The Gramophone Company, Glaxo Laboratories - were their work. In Form and Fancy, Dr Skinner looks first at the biographical background of Wallis, at the history and organisation of the partnership he founded, and at the many factors that contributed to its reputation in the inter-war years. She then offers a perspective on architectural thought and activity in that period, and of the attitudes and influences on factory design. Designs by the partnership for over one hundred factories and factory buildings have been discovered and at the core of the book is a third chapter which analyses and assesses them. Dr Skinner concludes with an evaluation of the design philosophy of Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, the aim of which was to contribute to the successful pursuit of business by the companies that commissioned them.

Four Corners of Nightby: Holden, Craig

Four Corners of Night
by: Holden, Craig

Hardcover. NY, Delacorte, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. It's 9:00 A.M. in an unnamed Midwestern city. Bank Arbaugh and Mack Steiner have just come off a typical night shift--patrolling the city, scaring off prostitutes, shaking up the usual suspects. Sitting in Denny's, waiting for bacon and eggs, they get a call over the radio: A teenage girl is missing. With a glance, the two cops--best friends since childhood, as close as brothers-- know their lives have shifted off balance, because seven years before, Bank's own daughter went missing and has not been found to this day. Two parallel stories: two girls from opposite sides of town, seven years separating them. As evidence mounts, one case begins to illuminate the other, until finally, the inevitable conclusion is revealed. Craig Holden takes us on a harrowing journey into the night, and exposes not only the heart of a tattered American city, but also of two men whose lives are intertwined in loss, envy, and love.

Fragonard: Drawing Triumphant
by: Stein, Perrin

Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. An exquisitely illustrated volume that emphasizes the importance of drawing in Fragonard's creative process One of the most forward-looking artists in 18th-century France, Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) is considered the preeminent draftsman of his time. This fresh assessment of the artist focuses on the role of drawing in his creative process and showcases Fragonard's mastery and experimentation with drawing in a range of media, from vivid red chalk to luminous brown wash, as well as etching, watercolor, and gouache. Unlike many old master painters, Fragonard explored the potential of drawings as works of art in their own right, ones that permitted him to work with great freedom and allowed his genius to shine. Still in publisher's shrink wrap.

Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan
by: Toby Jurovics, Carol Johnson, et al.

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 272 pages. In a lightly worn dust jacket with mild fading to spine. The image of the untamed American West persists as one of our country's most enduring cultural myths, and few photographers have captured more compelling images of the frontier than Timothy H. O'Sullivan. Trained under Mathew Brady, O'Sullivan accompanied several government expeditions to the West--most notably with geologist Clarence King in 1867 and cartographer George M. Wheeler in 1871. Along these journeys, O'Sullivan produced many beautiful photographs that exhibit a forthright and rigorous style formed in response to the landscapes he encountered. Faced with challenging terrain and lacking previous photographic examples on which to rely, O'Sullivan created a body of work that was without precedent in its visual and emotional complexities. The first major publication on O'Sullivan in more than thirty years, Framing the West offers a new aesthetic and formal interpretation of O'Sullivan's photographs and assesses his influence on the larger photographic canon. The book features previously unpublished and rarely seen images and serves as a field guide for O'Sullivan's original prints, presenting them for the first time in sequence with the chronology of their production.
