Landscape Painting Now: From Pop Abstraction to New Romanticism
by: Barry Schwabsky (Author), Todd Bradway (Editor), Robert Shane (Contributor)

NY, D.A.P., 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 368 pages. Although the fact may be surprising to some, landscape painting is positively thriving in the 21st century-indeed, the genre has arguably never felt as vital as it does today. The reasons why, if speculative, surely include our imminent environmental collapse and increasingly digitally mediated existence. Landscape Painting Now is the first book of its kind to take a global view of its subject, featuring more than eighty outstanding contemporary artists-both established and emerging-whose ages span seven decades and who hail from twenty-five different countries. Clean copy.

Landscapes for the People: George Alexander Grant, First Chief Photographer of the National Park Serviceby: Ren Davis (Author), Helen Davis (Author), Timothy Davis (F

Landscapes for the People: George Alexander Grant, First Chief Photographer of the National Park Service
by: Ren Davis (Author), Helen Davis (Author), Timothy Davis (F

Hardcover. Athens GA, University of Georgia Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 254 pages, b&w illustrations. George Alexander Grant is an unknown elder in the field of American landscape photography. Just as they did the work of his contemporaries Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Eliot Porter, and others, millions of people viewed Grant's photographs; unlike those contemporaries, few even knew Grant's name. Landscapes for the People shares his story through his remarkable images and a compelling biography profiling patience, perseverance, dedication, and an unsurpassed love of the natural and historic places that Americans chose to preserve. A Pennsylvania native, Grant was introduced to the parks during the summer of 1922 and resolved to make parks work and photography his life. Seven years later, he received his dream job and spent the next quarter century visiting the four corners of the country to produce images in more than one hundred national parks, monuments, historic sites, battlefields, and other locations. He was there to visually document the dramatic expansion of the National Park Service during the New Deal, including the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Grant's images are the work of a master craftsman. His practiced eye for composition and exposure and his patience to capture subjects in their finest light are comparable to those of his more widely known contemporaries. Nearly fifty years after his death, and in concert with the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service, it is fitting that George Grant's photography be introduced to a new generation of Americans.

Language and Silenceby: George Steiner

Language and Silence
by: George Steiner

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, reprint, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 426 pages. How do we evaluate the power and utility of language when it has been made to articulate falsehoods in certain totalitarian regimes or has been charged with vulgarity and imprecision in a mass-consumer democracy? How will language react to the increasingly urgent claims of more exact speech such as mathematics and symbolic notation? These are some of the questions Steiner addresses in this elegantly written book, first published in 1967 to international acclaim. Clean, bright copy.

Larry Fink
by: Laurie Dahlberg

Softcover. NY, Phaidon Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, 55 photos. Born in 1941, Larry Fink was a teenager in the 1950s in an America on the cusp of radical social change. Growing up on Long Island in New York, Larry Fink was disinterested in the consumer-driven culture of 1950s' America. A disaffected teenager, his parents transferred him to art school where his career as a photographer began to flourish. His parents were supportive of his interest in the arts, and Fink would later drop out of college to join a circle of artists living in Greenwich Village. Fink spent the 1960s watching and learning from the prominent photographers of the time: Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith, and in many ways, his photographic aesthetic and rebellious spirit encapsulate the dramatic lose of innocence that the US underwent after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. photographic mentor.

Last Chance for Eden: Selected Art Criticism by Christopher Knight 1979-1994
by: Christopher Knight

Hardcover. Los Angeles, Art Issues Press, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 420 pages with index. Christopher Knight is the unprecedented five-time winner of the Chemical Bank Award for Distinguished Newspaper Art Criticism, and was a finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize in criticism. Writing first for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and now for the Los Angeles Times, Knight has developed a new journalistic approach to American art and culture, in which a radical defense of images stands alongside an incisive critique of cultural institutions. Among the 129 essays and reviews collected here are individual writings on internationally important historical figures, such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Tung Ch'i Ch'ang, and douard Manet; contemporary American masters like Edward Ruscha and Mike Kelley; and significant artists virtually forgotten today, such as California's Henrietta Shore and Mexico's Hermenegildo Bustos. Last Laughs: Cartoons About Aging, Retirement...and the Great Beyond by: Mort Gerberg (Editor)

Last Laughs: Cartoons About Aging, Retirement...and the Great Beyond
by: Mort Gerberg (Editor)

Hardcover. NY, Scribner, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, Twenty-six New Yorker cartoonists take on aging, retirement, death and the Great Beyond. George Booth, Edward Koren, Marisa Acocella Marchetto (creator of Cancer Vixen) and Gahan Wilson are among those confronting the Reaper. Some cartoons in the book have previously appeared in the New Yorker, but most are originals. Contributors range in age from their 30s to the 90-year-old Frank Modell. Various cartoons deal with the shock of baby boomers as their old age looms: Roz Chast depicts the body with a mind of its own, aging despite its owner's wishes; J.B. Handelsman draws an executive telling an older worker that the company encourages certain employees to die. But many of the cartoons celebrate the continuing vitality of seniors, such as Lee Lorenz's female astronaut who will be the first Gray Panther to walk on the moon. The hooded Grim Reaper is a continuing presence, but many cartoons are set in heaven or hell. In the back of the book, most of the contributors say who they would like to meet in the Great Beyond. In this life-affirming collection, even death can't halt the momentum of the human comedy. Clean copy.

Le Corbusier in America: Travels in the Land of the Timidby: Bacon, Mardges

Le Corbusier in America: Travels in the Land of the Timid
by: Bacon, Mardges

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, MIT Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 406 pages, Hardcover with dust jacket. B&w illustrations. Clean, tight copy. How Le Corbusier's first trip to the United States shaped his critique of the country and affected both his work and the diffusion of his ideas. Le Corbusier's first trip to the United States in 1935 is generally considered a failure because it produced no commissions. The experience nevertheless had a profound effect on him, both personally and professionally. Sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Le Corbusier promoted his ideas through a lecture tour, exhibition, and press conferences, as well as in meetings with industrialists, housing reformers, New Deal technocrats, and editors. His lectures were watershed events that advanced the cause of European modernism. Yet he returned to France empty-handed and published a bittersweet account, Quand les Cathedrales etaient blanches: Voyage au Pays des Timid Personnes (When the Cathedrals Were White: Journey to the Country of Timid People), which faulted America for lacking the courage to adopt his ideas.

Le Corbusier Le Grandby: Jean-Louis Cohen (Editor), Tim Benton (Contributor)

Le Corbusier Le Grand
by: Jean-Louis Cohen (Editor), Tim Benton (Contributor)

Hardcover. NY, Phaidon Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, This slip-cased, oversized book, weighing 20 pounds and containing over 2000 illustrations, summarizes the life and work of the most important modern architect of the 20th century: the legendary, controversial, and confrontational Le Corbusier. Le Corbusier was not exclusively an architect but an artist (painter and sculptor), urbanist, author, furniture designer, world traveler, and media figure. What is most impressive in this volume are the huge-scale photographs drawn from the Le Corbusier archives at the Fondation Le Corbusier in France. These photographs are personal, professional, indicative, anecdotal, illustrative, and symbolic of the entire saga of Le Corbusier's life and career over 60 years. They make this book an absolute gold mine for anyone wanting to understand and steep themselves in the spirit and character of this greatest modern architect of the last century. The written material is also first-rate: Jean-Louis Cohen, France's best-known historian of modern architecture, contributes an informative introduction, and Tim Benton, a well-known British architectural historian, writes opening texts for individual chapters. Recommended for architecture and art libraries as well as public libraries with serious art collections.--Peter S. Kaufman, Boston Architectural Ctr. NOTE; DUE TO SIZE AND WEIGHT THIS VOLUME CANNOT BE SHIPPED OUTSIDE THE U.S.

Le Corbusier: The City of Refuge, Paris 1929/33by: Taylor, Brian Brace

Le Corbusier: The City of Refuge, Paris 1929/33
by: Taylor, Brian Brace

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 200 pages. The City of Refuge complex--commissioned by the Salvation Army as part of its program to transform social outcasts into spiritually renewed workers--represents a significant confluence of design principles, technological experiments, and attitudes on reform. It also provides rare insights into the work of one of the twentieth century's greatest architects, Le Corbusier. Brian Brace Taylor draws on extensive archival research to reconstruct each step of the architect's attraction to the commission, his design process and technological innovations, the social and philosophical compatibility of the Salvation Army with Le Corbusier's own ideas for urban planning, and finally, the many modifications required, first to eliminate defects and later to accommodate changes in the services the building provided. Throughout, Taylor focuses on Le Corbusier's environmental, technological, and social intentions as opposed to his strictly formal intentions. He shows that the City of Refuge became primarily a laboratory for the architect's own research and not simply a conventional solution to residents' requirements or the Salvation Army's program.

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale School of Architecture/Norton, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 194 pages illustrated in color and b&w. The fifth in a series documenting the Edward P. Bass Visiting Fellowship in Architecture at Yale, this book chronicles the collaboration of Fellow Chuck Atwood, the former vice chairman of Harrah's board of directors, with Davenport Visiting Professor David M. Schwarz, assisted by Brook Denison and Darin Cook. Focusing on Las Vegas's lack of pedestrianism, they asked the students to investigate vital urban sites around the world and then apply theses lessons learned to the automobile-centric Strip. The students met with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Harrah's CEO Gary Loveman, and private-equity managers David Bonderman and Marc Rowman as they devised ways to transform the world's premiere themed playground into a livable and pedestrian-oriented city. Documents the development of plans for a campus of resorts on the Las Vegas Strip by a studio of ten Yale students. Clean copy.
