Industrial Strength Design: How Brooks Stevens Shaped Your World by: Glenn Adamson / David Gordon (Preface)

Industrial Strength Design: How Brooks Stevens Shaped Your World
by: Glenn Adamson / David Gordon (Preface)

Softcover. The MIT Press , reprint, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, The first publication documenting the work of Brooks Stevens, one of America's most influential twentieth-century designers. A long overdue introduction to the work of visionary industrial designer Brooks Stevens (1911-1995). Believing that an industrial designer "should be a businessman, an engineer, and a stylist, in that order," Stevens created thousands of ingenious and beautiful designs for industrial and household products--including a clothes dryer with a window in the front, a wide-mouthed peanut butter jar, and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. ("There's nothing more aerodynamic than a wiener," he explained.) He invented a precursor to the SUV by turning a Jeep into a station wagon after World War II, and streamlined steam irons so that they resembled aircraft. It was Brooks Stevens who, in 1954, coined the phrase "planned obsolescence," defining it as "instilling in the buyer the desire to own something a little newer, a little better, a little sooner than is necessary." This concept has since been blamed for everything from toasters that stop working to today's throwaway culture, but Stevens was simply recognizing the intentionally ephemeral nature of a designer's work. Asked once to name his favorite design, he replied, "none, because every one would have to be restudied for the tastes of tomorrow." Clean copy still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

by: Glenn O' Brien

Softcover. Taschen, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in a pictorial slipcase. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin's work has graced the walls and pages of some of the world's finest galleries and fashion magazines, and if it is surprising that their photographs easily float between these worlds, it is by virtue of their ease in creating imagery that seeks homes in both culturally elite and mainstream outlets. For some of their photographs, such as their portrait of Bjork or campaign for Givenchy, van Lamsweerde and Matadin have worked in collaboration with the art directors M/M (Paris), who have also designed this retrospective that looks back at pretty much everything? that the photographers have been working on for over two decades and that has brought them to the forefront in the fields of both art and fashion. 702 pages. 11 x 11 inches.

Infinite Ice: The Arctic and the Alps from 1860 to the Presentby: Schroder, Klaus Albrecht

Infinite Ice: The Arctic and the Alps from 1860 to the Present
by: Schroder, Klaus Albrecht

Hardcover. US, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Photographs of glaciers and Arctic regions have existed almost as long as photography itself, as a function of documentary and mapmaking endeavors. As early as the 1860s, the medium was used to assess topology, capturing Arctic landscape at a distance and at close quarters, or producing stereoscopic images or panoramas. Glaciologists needed photographs to be taken year after year in order to assess the growth or contraction of the ice, and today repeat photography has become a valuable tool for documenting and demonstrating the real effects of global warming. In Infinite Ice, historical images are reproduced alongside the responses of contemporary artists who have addressed photography and landscape--for example, long, nighttime exposures by Darren Almond, aerial photographs by Olafur Eliasson or panoramic views by Walter Niedermayr. Featuring approximately 100 images, this volume presents a broad variety of glacial photography from 1860 to the present.

Ingo Maurer: Designing with Light
by: Bernhard Dessecker and Frank Koschembar

Hardcover. Prestel, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. The first overview of the work of lighting designer Ingo Maurer, the "poet of light." Ingo Maurer has been illuminating lives since 1966, when he designed his first light fixture for an installation at the Herman Miller showroom in Munich. His creation was entitled Bulb and featured a light bulb within a light bulb. The design was so successful that Maurer had to produce more to match the demand. Since then, his fascination with lighting, his pursuit of simplicity of form, and his talents as a graphic designer and typographer have brought him to the forefront of his field. His work has been exhibited in countless museums and it has brightened urban bridges, artistic exhibitions, retail and commercial spaces as well as numerous private homes. Arranged thematically, this dazzling retrospective brings together an extensive and representative selection of Maurer's lamps and lighting systems. Contributions by design experts, including Issey Miyake and Paola Antonelli, round out this portrait of a creative mind who continues to push the boundaries of lighting design.

Ingres and his Critics
by: Shelton, Andrew Carrington

Hardcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 334 pages. Spanning his renunciation of the Salon in 1834 until his large retrospective at the crucial 1855 Universal Exposition, this book examines the critical writing and journalistic reportage on Jean-Auguste-Dominque Ingres. It demonstrates how Ingres shaped his career in the rapidly evolving art world of mid-nineteenth century Paris. While enjoying the benefits of his affiliation with the Academy, the artist also pursued certain modes of presentation, most notably the single-artist exhibition and illustrated monograph, through which he distanced himself from the embattled world of artistic officialdom.

Ingres and the Studio: Women, Painting, Historyby: Betzer, Sarah

Ingres and the Studio: Women, Painting, History
by: Betzer, Sarah

Hardcover. Penn State University Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 328 pages illustrated in color. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres has long been recognized as one of the great painters of the modern era and among the greatest portraitists of all time. Over a century and a half of scholarly writing on the artist has grappled with Ingres's singular identity, his relationship to past and future masters, and the idiosyncrasies of his art. Ingres and the Studio: Women, Painting, History makes a unique contribution to this literature by focusing on the importance of Ingres's training of students and the crucial role played by portraits-and their subjects-for Ingres's studio and its developing aesthetic project. Rather than understanding the portrait as merely a screen onto which the artist's desires were projected, the book insists on the importance of accounting for the active role of portrait sitters themselves. Through careful analysis of familiar and long-overlooked works, Ingres and the Studio traces a series of encounters between painters and portrait subjects in which women sitters-such as the artist Julie Mottez, art critic, salonniere, and historian Marie d'Agoult, and tragic actress Rachel-emerge as vital interlocutors in a shared aesthetic project. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

This book takes the reader on an alternative ride through "the happiest place on earth" while asking "What makes this forty-three-square-mile theme park the quintessential embodiment of American leisure?" Turning away from the programmed entertainment that Disney presents, the authors take a peek behind the scenes of everyday experience at Disney World. In their consideration of the park as both private corporate enterprise and public urban environment, the authors focus on questions concerning the production and consumption of leisure. Featuring over fifty photographs and interviews with workers that strip "cast members" of their cartoon costumes, this captivating work illustrates the high-pressure dynamics of the typical family vacation as well as a tour of Disney World that looks beyond the controlled facade of themed attractions. Intellectuals and Societyby: Thomas Sowell

Intellectuals and Society
by: Thomas Sowell

Hardcover. NY, Basic Books , 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. This title offers a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large. It has not been by shaping the opinions or directing the actions of the holders of power that modern intellectuals have most influenced the course of events, but by shaping public opinion in ways that affect the actions of power holders in democratic societies, whether or not those power holders accept the general vision or the particular policies favored by intellectuals. In "Intellectuals and Society", Thomas Sowell not only examines the track record of intellectuals in the things they have advocated but also analyzes the incentives and constraints under which their views and visions have emerged. Ultimately, he shows how often intellectuals have been proved not only wrong, but grossly and disastrously wrong in their prescriptions for the ills of society. Clean copy.
