Matisse's Sculpture: The Pinup and the Primitiveby: McBreen, Ellen

Matisse's Sculpture: The Pinup and the Primitive
by: McBreen, Ellen

Hardcover. New Haven, CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. 228 pages. Long perceived as a side pursuit to his celebrated painting career, Henri Matisse's sculpture receives an overdue critical examination in this book. Beginning in 1906, soon after the artist acquired his first African sculpture, Matisse found inspiration in erotic and ethnographic photography, which had become inexpensively mass-produced thanks to advances in halftone technology. Working with these two radically different depictions of the body--one hand carved, the other mechanically made--was a foundational method for Matisse and crucial to the development of his pre-World War I abstraction. Far from a simple narrative of the artist "discovering" Africa, the highly original readings of Matisse's Sculpture plot new coordinates of study for early 20th-century primitivism. It examines the larger constructs of thought at the time, with a penetrating analysis of anthropology, popular erotica, and the visual culture of French colonialism. In addition, the book repositions Matisse's sculptural practice, particularly in regard to its investigations of race and sexuality, as a cornerstone of his prolific career.

Matisse: In Search of True Paintingby: Rebecca Rabinow and Dorthe Aagesen

Matisse: In Search of True Painting
by: Rebecca Rabinow and Dorthe Aagesen

Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 260 pages. Throughout his long career, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) continually expanded the boundaries of his art. By repeating images in pairs, trios, and series, he conducted an ongoing dialogue with his earlier works in order to, as he put it, "push further and deeper into true painting." In this fresh approach to a much-studied artist, prominent scholars from the United States and Europe examine more than sixty works in concise chapters that focus on this aspect of Matisse's working process. From early pairs such as Young Sailor I and II (1907-8) through a series of late studio scenes from Venice (1946-48), Matisse is shown revisiting a given theme with the aim of devising innovative, often radical, solutions to such problems as how to portray light, handle paint, select colors, and manipulate perspective. New technical studies of the early paired works and photographs documenting the evolution of his later paintings help to elucidate Matisse's complex evolution. In numerous excerpts from letters and interviews, he is revealed as an artist who regularly questioned himself and his methods, a man of powerful intellect who regarded each new painting as an adventure. A significant addition to art historical literature, Matisse: In Search of True Painting is a revelatory study of a seminal figure in 20th-century modernism.

Matisse: The Books by: Lalaurie, Louise Rogers

Matisse: The Books
by: Lalaurie, Louise Rogers

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 320 pages. The livre d'artiste, or "artist's book," is among the most prized in rare book collections. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the greatest artists to work in this genre, and he created his most important during a period of intense personal and physical suffering. Brimming with powerful themes and imagery, these works are crucial to understanding Matisse's oeuvre. With deftness and sensitivity, Louise Rogers Lalaurie reintroduces us to Matisse by considering how in each volume, Matisse constructed an intriguing dialogue between word and image. Examining this page-by-page interplay, translating key sequences, and discussing the books' distinct themes and production histories, Lalaurie offers the thoughtful analysis these works deserve. Together Matisse's artist books reveal his deep engagement with questions of beauty and truth; his faith; his perspectives on aging, loss, and inspiration; and his relationship to his critics, the French art establishment, and the women in his life. In addition, Lalaurie illuminates Matisse's often misunderstood political affinities--though Matisse was vilified in his time for choosing to live in the collaborationist Vichy zone, his wartime books reveal a body of work that stands as a deeply personal statement of resistance. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Matisse: The Man and His Art, 1869-1918by: Flam, Jack

Matisse: The Man and His Art, 1869-1918
by: Flam, Jack

Hardcover. Ithaca NY, Cornell University, 1st, 1986, Hardcover, 523 pages. Flam, who translated Matisse's writings in Matisse on Art (Phaidon, 1973), presents a thorough and scholarly examination of the artist's life and stylistic development. Each painting is given a complete analysis, revealing Matisse's encounters with the prevailing styles and theories of art to arrive at work distinctly his own. Glimpses of his personal life combined with discussions of his paintings show the inner turmoil with which he struggled to find a style that would satisfy both his instinct and his intellect. Flam provides new documentary material, corrects earlier misconceptions, and redates several paintings. Heavily illustrated, often with fine color reproductions, this volume is an excellent successor to Alfred Barr's Matisse .

Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle (SIGNED)
by: Barney, Matthew; Spector, Nancy & Neville Wakefield

Hardcover. NY, Guggenheim Museum, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Hardcover First Edition SIGNED on title page by Matthew Barney. With essays by Nancy Spector and Neville Wakefield. Text in English. Published on the occasion of the exhibitions in Cologne, Paris and New York, 2002 - 2003. Cremaster Cycle is the definitive guide for 'The Cremaster Cycle', the Matthew Barney's epic five-part film series. The book is filled with hundreds of Barney's fantastical images which use the biological model of sexual difference as its conceptual departure point. Three essays by Barney experts articulate the series' diverse themes and explore the artist's innovative aesthetic vocabulary; interviews with key collaborators, a composer, costume designer, make-up artist, technicians and actors reveal his working process. A trailblazing essay by Curator of Contemporary Art Nancy Spector charts Barney's work from the 1990s to the present and provides critical insights into the aesthetic vocabulary of his five 'Cremaster' films, while Neville Wakefield's 'Cremaster Glossary' illuminates the films most far-flung references with citations from sources as diverse as Freud's psychoanalytic studies, Mormon law and lore, and hardcore music fanzines. In addition to stills from the five films, the book features related sculptures, photographs, drawings and storyboards. Barney himself collaborated on all aspects of this extraordinary publication, including the selection of over 700 images, most of them never before published. 530 pages. 32,2x23,5x6,2 cm Hardcover with plastic dust jacket with green and black cover title . Maurice Brazil Prendergastby: Prendergast, Charles

Maurice Brazil Prendergast
by: Prendergast, Charles

Hardcover. Munich, Williams College Museum of Art/Prestel, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 812 pages. Blue cloth slip case, 2193 illustrations including 100 color plates. Book still in shrink wrap, in excellent condition. If you think that Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) only produced decorative park and beach scenes rendered in an abstract style, these two new volumes will set the record straight. Thanks in large part to the generosity of the Eugenie Prendergast Foundation, Mathews has produced a splendid exhibition catalog that surveys the career of the American Impressionist. She also labored for over six years as part of a team of art historians to create a monumental, ten-pound, slip-cased tome that documents the total artistic output of the two Prendergast brothers, Maurice and Charles, A Catalogue Raisonne. A good balance has been struck between the books. The exhibition catalog, of interest to both lay people and scholars, offers a chronological discussion of Maurice's ever-evolving style along with selected works represented by 130 glorious color plates. In contrast, the comprehensive catalogue raisonne , with its highly detailed essays by eight art historians, features 2200 illustrations, 100 of which are in color. All works discussed are represented by an image and catalog entry and range from the sketchbooks, monotypes, and applied graphics of Maurice to the carved and painted panels and sculpture of Charles (1863-1948). A Herculean achievement, the catalogue raisonne will long serve as a cornerstone in the arena of American art history reference.

Maurizio Galimberti: New York Polaroid
by: Giuliana Scim

Hardcover. Damiani, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 260 pages. Italian photographer Maurizio Galimberti works exclusively in Polariod. His mosaics of square, white-bordered frames have captured personalities including Andres Serrano, Wim Wenders, Monica Bellucci and Sting, among many others, piece by piece. When he doesn't scratch designs onto the developing pictures with a stick or even a toothbrush, preemptively disrupting any sense that his work directly reflects the real, he takes hundreds of shots of the same subject and eventually assembles up to 140 in a single finished grid. His patrons have included Conde Nast, Rizzoli and Time, and, in advertising, Cartier, Rolex, Nokia, Fiat and Veuve Cliquot. This personal portfolio of the city of New York is full of clean-edged skyscrapers and bridges, limitless streets, multicolored signs, vivid people and limpid skies. Galimberti's Big Apple is thoroughly deconstructed and reconstructed, and the resulting unreal city corresponds perfectly with the soul of New York.

Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Musicby: Michael Broyles

Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Music
by: Michael Broyles

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 398 pages. From colonial times to the present, American composers have lived on the fringes of society and defined themselves in large part as outsiders. In this stimulating book Michael Broyles considers the tradition of maverick composers and explores what these mavericks reveal about American attitudes toward the arts and about American society itself. Broyles starts by examining the careers of three notably unconventional composers: William Billings in the eighteenth century, Anthony Philip Heinrich in the nineteenth, and Charles Ives in the twentieth. All three had unusual lives, wrote music that many considered incomprehensible, and are now recognized as key figures in the development of American music. Broyles goes on to investigate the proliferation of eccentric individualism in all types of American music-classical, popular, and jazz-and how it has come to dominate the image of diverse creative artists from John Cage to Frank Zappa. The history of the maverick tradition, Broyles shows, has much to tell us about the role of music in American culture and the tension between individualism and community in the American consciousness. Maverix and Lunatix features 101 full page portraits (and more) by a cartooning icon in his own right, Drew Friedman, spotlighting the essential artists, writers, and editors who defined one of the great art and countercultural movements of the 20th century. Featuring R. Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson, Melinda Gebbie, Art Spiegelman, Vaughn Bode, Trina Robbins, Bill Griffith, Jay Lynch, Sharon Rudahl, Larry Gonick, Rick Veitch, Joyce Farmer, Justin Green, "Grass" Green, George DiCaprio, Diane Noomin, Harvey Pekar, Robert Williams, Howard Cruse, Dan O'Neill, Spain Rodriguez, Shary Flenniken, Richard Corben, and so many others... all of whom helped to reinvent an entire artistic medium and became icons of underground comix. Featuring a foreword by Marc Maron (WTF with Marc Maron) and an afterword by historian Patrick Rosenkranz (Rebel Visions: The Underground Comix Revolution 1963-1975), each portrait in Maverix and Lunatix is also accompanied by a short biography of its subject by Friedman, making the book both a gorgeous art book and a valuable historical resource.

Max Baur: In the Bauhaus Spirit: Photographs 1925-1960by: Stephan Steins

Max Baur: In the Bauhaus Spirit: Photographs 1925-1960
by: Stephan Steins

Hardcover. Edition Stemmle, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 136 pages. Bauhaus photography is well served by this first monograph on Max Baur, with many of the previously unpublished photographs also serving as a new source for Bauhaus studies. Working in Germany, at first providing images for postcards, Baur expanded his efforts to encompass landscape, portrait, and architectural images. In each of these genres, his work reflects the cool, objective approach of the Bauhaus style combined with the artist's elegant handling of light and perspective. In photos of stairways and colonnades, factories, and everyday objects, Baur was able to eliminate the extraneous and offer the essential nature of his subject. The book covers a period of vast changes in the world and in the life of the artist, but throughout there is a consistency of vision. An essay by William Ewing, director of the Mus e de l'Elys e (which specializes in photography), gives a brief description of the life and career of Baur with enthusiasm and warmth, while Edelmann-Pomplitz writes movingly about her experience as his student. In a letter to her, Baur expresses his credo most eloquently: "it is with light alone that we create images." This lovely work is a fine example of excellent printing and composition in harmony with content.

Hardcover. London/NY, Prestel/DelMonico Books, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 272 pages. Richly illustrated and filled with detailed information about one of the leading artists of the 20th century, this is the first book to explore in depth the Saint Louis Art Museum's outstanding holdings of paintings by Max Beckmann-the largest collection of its kind in the world. One of the greatest German painters of the 20th century, Max Beckmann came to America in the mid-1940s and settled in St. Louis. There he met the retailer and collector Morton D. May. By the time May died, in 1983, he had amassed a comprehensive collection of Beckmann's oeuvre, most of which he bequeathed to the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM). The stunning breadth and power of Beckmann's work are explored in this volume, which examines all thirty-nine paintings in SLAM's collection. Featuring some of Beckmann's most celebrated images, this book offers fascinating insights into Beckmann's life and art-in particular his underappreciated early work and previously unexplored aspects of his final years in the United States.

INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHORS on the half-title page. Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century. His unmistakable paintings, characterized by "Parrish Blue" water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and exquisite young women in flowing classical robes, are infused with a romantic Eden-like quality so entrancing that reproductions are as enthusiastically received today as the prints were when they first appeared. A wonderful selection of his work with brilliant reproductions. Clean copy.
