Softcover. Raleigh NC, TwoMorrows Publishing , 1st pbk, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Paperback, 256 pages, illustrated in color. From the 1940s to the '70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the "artist's artist" through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; the THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features. Comic art historian Roger Hill has compiled a complete and extensive history of Crandall's life and career, from his early years and major successes, through his tragic decline and passing in 1982. Reel Art: Great Posters from the Golden Age of the Silver Screen by: Rebello Stephen; Richard Allen

Reel Art: Great Posters from the Golden Age of the Silver Screen
by: Rebello Stephen; Richard Allen

Hardcover. New York, Abbeville Press, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, large format, 342 pages. "Each of the 300 posters included in Reel Art has been reproduced to the uncompromising standards of all Abbeville's fine art books. The selection of posters is world-class, many never been published, and the definite text, by screenwriter and film historian Stephen Rebello, tells the vastly entertaining story behind the posters and their creators." The four decades between 1910 and 1950 were the golden age of the American movie poster, an era when wonderful films wer promoted through the talents of legendary illustrators like Thomas Hart Benton, Norman Rockwell, Howard Chandler Christy and Jmes Montgomery Flagg, as well as a small army of unknowns. It was a time when big studios lavished fortunes on poster campaigns - from modest one-sheets posted on neighbourhood fences to the gargantuan forty-eight sheets that usurped entire sides of multi-storey buildings. Hollywood knew that the right image could seduce millions past the box office and into the theatre. Today such graphics fetch five-figure prices from collectors seeking a Casablanca or a King Kong.

Reflections in a Looking Glass: A Centennial Celebration of Lewis Carroll, Photographerby: Morton N. Cohen, Roy Flukinger, et al.

Reflections in a Looking Glass: A Centennial Celebration of Lewis Carroll, Photographer
by: Morton N. Cohen, Roy Flukinger, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages. Published on the one hundredth anniversary of the death of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Reflections in a Looking Glass presents Carroll's remarkable photography. Richly illustrated, this important book presents seldom-seen works-most of them formal portraits and staged scenes that combine Carroll's famous childlike sense of play with the Victorian propriety that characterized his age. Also included in Reflections are selected drawings by Lewis Carroll and by John Tenniel, who illustrated the original Alice books. The central text by Morton N. Cohen, the world's leading authority on Lewis Carroll, provides an in-depth account of Carroll's experimentations in the new medium of photography. His hobby opened the door to many of his "child friends" as well as to leading artistic and literary figures of the day, all of whom came to Carroll's studio to sit for their portraits. Excerpts from Carroll's diaries combine with Cohen's annotated captions to make this book an invaluable resource. The book also includes a Preface by Mark Haworth-Booth, curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Afterword is by Roy Flukinger, curator of photographs at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas, Austin, the source collection for much of the material in this extraordinary book.

Reflections On Fieldwork In Moroccoby: Paul Rabinow

Reflections On Fieldwork In Morocco
by: Paul Rabinow

Softcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, reprint, 1977, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 170 pages. Having previously published a more standard ethnographic study about Morocco, here Rabinow describes in straight-forward language a series of encounters with his informants, from a French innkeeper holding on to the vestiges of a colonial past to the rural descendants of a seventeenth-century saint. The unfolding of these encounters over the length of the author's stay in Morocco develops the book's main theme, that the collection of cultural data shapes and informs that material and its participant observer as well.

Reflections/Refractions: Self-Portraits in the Twentieth Century by: Reaves, Wendy Wick / Anne Collins Goodyear

Reflections/Refractions: Self-Portraits in the Twentieth Century
by: Reaves, Wendy Wick / Anne Collins Goodyear

Hardcover. Washington DC, Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press , 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. At least since the Renaissance, artists have created wonderful images of themselves. Some self-portraits are the equivalent of a painter's "signature," while others were inspired by the need to establish social status or gain a commission. In the twentieth century, however, self-representation turned inward, becoming a means by which artists sought to navigate passageways of the mind. In Reflections/Refractions, some of the greatest modern artists--including Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Jacob Lawrence, Louise Bourgeois, David Hockney, Alexander Calder, and Alex Katz--use sinuous line and gorgeous color to trace the intricacies of their personalities, whether dark and gloomy or bright and fanciful. The book is at once a catalog of twentieth-century self-portraits in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and an exploration of how modern artists view themselves and the world. Eighty color illustrations--drawings and paintings--are accompanied by lively and informative captions, making this volume an endlessly fascinating book. Clean copy.

Reframing Rembrandt: Jews and the Christian Image in Seventeenth-Century Amsterdamby: Zell, Michael

Reframing Rembrandt: Jews and the Christian Image in Seventeenth-Century Amsterdam
by: Zell, Michael

Hardcover. Berkeley, CA , University of California Press, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 283 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket edges. A tight copy. Black and white illustrations throughout. This richly detailed study reconceptualizes a striking but enigmatic moment in Rembrandt's art from the 1650s--one of the artist's most prolific and creative periods. Michael Zell identifies a significant theological shift in Rembrandt's use of religious imagery and interprets this shift in light of the unique religious and social conditions of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Rembrandt's biblical art has generally been regarded as the embodiment of a Protestant aesthetic. By looking closely at the artist's relationship with his patron Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel and the ideas of a group of "philosemitic" Protestants with whom the rabbi was engaged in an apologetic dialogue, Zell deepens and complicates our understanding of Rembrandt's sacred art from this period.

Religious and Poetic Experience in the Thought of Michael Oakeshott (British Idealist Studies, Series 1: Oakeshott)by: Worthington, Glenn

Religious and Poetic Experience in the Thought of Michael Oakeshott (British Idealist Studies, Series 1: Oakeshott)
by: Worthington, Glenn

Hardcover. Exeter UK, Imprint Academic, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 179 pages. Light shelf-wear and scratching to dust jacket, else a clean, tight copy. Much of the scholarly attention attracted by Michael Oakeshott's writings has focused upon his philosophical characterisation of the relations that constitute moral association in the modern world. A less noticed, but equally significant, aspect of Oakeshott's moral philosophy is his account of the type of person (or persona) required to enter into and enjoy moral association. Oakeshott's best known characterisation of the persona best suited to moral association occurs in his identification of a 'morality of the individual'. The book argues that Oakeshott's characterisations of religious and poetic experience provide a more detailed account of the type of persona that emerged in response to what it perceived as an invitation to participate in moral association in the modern world.

Rembrandt's Religious Prints: The Feddersen Collection at the Snite Museum of Art by: Rosenberg, Charles M.

Rembrandt's Religious Prints: The Feddersen Collection at the Snite Museum of Art
by: Rosenberg, Charles M.

Hardcover. Indiana University Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 475 pages. Rembrandt's stunning religious prints stand as evidence of the Dutch master's extraordinary skill as a technician and as a testament to his genius as a teller of tales. Here, several virtually unknown etchings, collected by the Feddersen family and now preserved for the ages at the University of Notre Dame, are made widely available in a lavishly illustrated volume. Building on the contributions of earlier Rembrandt scholars, noted art historian Charles M. Rosenberg illuminates each of the 70 religious prints through detailed background information on the artist's career as well as the historical, religious, and artistic impulses informing their creation. Readers will enjoy an impression of the earliest work, The Circumcision (1625-26); the famous Hundred Guilder Print; the enigmatic eighth state of Christ Presented to the People; one of a handful of examples of the very rare final posthumous state of The Three Crosses; and an impression and counterproof of The Triumph of Mordecai. From the joyous epiphany of the coming of the Messiah to the anguish of the betrayal of a father (Jacob) by his children, from choirs of angels waiting to receive the Virgin into heaven to the dog who defecates in the road by an ancient inn (The Good Samaritan), Rembrandt's etchings offer a window into the nature of faith, aspiration, and human experience, ranging from the ecstatically divine to the worldly and mundane. Ultimately, these prints? modest, intimate, fragile objects?are great works of art which, like all masterpieces, reward us with fresh insights and discoveries at each new encounter. Clean copy.

by: Ira Berlin/Marc Favreau/Steven Miller

Hardcover. NY, The New Press , 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover book with a bright dust jacket in a slipcase that also includes interview tapes. A startling first-person history of slavery. Using excerpts from the thousands of interviews conducted with ex-slaves in the 1930s by researchers working with the Federal Writers' Project, the astonishing audiotapes made available the only known recordings of people who actually experienced enslavement-recordings that had gathered dust in the Library of Congress until they were rendered audible for the first time specifically for this set. Two sixty-minute audiotapes: the first is original recordings of former slaves recorded in the 1930s, the second features dramatic readings by Esther Rolle, James Earl Jones and other black artists. Foreword by Robin D. G. Kelley.

Remote Control: Power Cultures and the World of Appearancesby: Kruger, Barbara

Remote Control: Power Cultures and the World of Appearances
by: Kruger, Barbara

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, MIT Press, 2nd Pr., 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 251 pages, with her photo-illustrated dust jacket. Who speaks? Who is silent? Who is seen? Who is absent? These questions focus on how cultures are constructed through pictures and words, how we are seduced into a world of appearances: into a pose of who we are and aren't. On both an emotional and an economic level, images and texts have the power to make us rich or poor. In these essays and reviews, written over the last decade, Barbara Kruger addresses that power with intelligence and wit, in the hope of engaging both our criticality and our dreams of affirmation. Barbara Kruger is an artist whose pictures and words engage issues of power, sex, money, difference, and death. Her work has appeared throughout America, Europe, and Japan in galleries, newspapers, magazines, and museums and on billboards, matchbooks, TV programs, t-shirts, postcards, and shopping bags. She has written about television, film, and cultures for Artforum, Esquire, the New York Times, and the Village Voice.

Rene Herbst: Pioneer of Modernismby: Guillemette Delaporte

Rene Herbst: Pioneer of Modernism
by: Guillemette Delaporte

Hardcover. NY, Flammarion, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages, color and b&w illustrations. Rene Herbst's enduring furniture designs provide fundamental lessons for today's interior designers. A staunch modernist, Herbst was a founding member and later president of the Union des artistes modernes (UAM) in France, which sought to make domestic comfort accessible to all, regardless of class. The diversity of his work is testament to his prolific and creative output, and his design is marked by its simplicity and functionality. The French architect turned designer was nicknamed the "man of steel" because he pioneered the use of the material for furniture years before mass production on a large scale was possible. In 1929 he created several versions of his celebrated Sandow Chair, which ignited his research into serial production and inaugurated the era of mass production. This book presents a selection of the best works from the Herbst Collection held by the library of the Musee des Arts decoratifs in Paris, and demonstrates how Herbst was the catalyst of a new style of living that spurred the birth of modernity.
