Infantaby: Ralph Gibson

Infanta
by: Ralph Gibson

Hardcover. Takarajima Books, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 119 pages. The female nude has long been an important subject for photographer Gibson, but in earlier books, his nudes appeared as elements in sequences of all kinds of images. With Infanta, Gibson abandons the sequencing, presenting instead a collection of big, rather simplified black-and-white images. Like Lee Friedlander in his Nudes (1991), in middle age Gibson expresses an intense fascination with the bodies of young women. Whereas Friedlander used the camera to awkwardly describe specific details, Gibson uses his to idealize beautiful body fragments. Gibson's high-contrast, grainy printing style and abstract compositions have hardly changed in two decades. Alexandra Anderson-Spivy's accompanying essay perceptively responds to Gibson's work, but Mary Gaitskill's vulgar afterword (the memoir of a stripper) seems jarringly inappropriate to the idealism of the photographs.

Innocence and Seduction: The Art of Dan DeCarlo - Expanded Editionby: Morrison, Bill

Innocence and Seduction: The Art of Dan DeCarlo - Expanded Edition
by: Morrison, Bill

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, Revised Ed., 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 272 pages. The definitive retrospective of Dan DeCarlo, the great Archie Comics artist -- a fitting tribute to the life and art of one of the world's all-time best cartoonists, lavishly designed and now expanded with nearly 350 illustrations, including rare cartoons and strips, and of course, lots of those fabulous DeCarlo ladies! Dan DeCarlo worked mostly on wholesome all-American features like Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica and My Friend Irma, but he populated these innocent stories with his irresistibly attractive women. His unique blend of hilarious homespun humor and libido-sparking art made DeCarlo's work outshine the competition. Though best known as the definitive Archie Comics artist and creator of Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, DeCarlo also brought his unique style to dozens of other characters including Millie the Model, Big Boy, Batman, and The Simpsons. Fan, friend, and fellow cartoonist Bill Morrison has produced the ultimate book on this remarkable artist, lavishly designed with nearly 350 illustrations. Included are rare World War II-era cartoons, original Humorama pinups, seldom-seen newspaper strips, examples of his justly famous commercial comics work, and of course, lots and lots of those fabulous DeCarlo ladies! Full color and black-and-white illustrations and photographs throughout. First published in 2006 with 40 fewer pages, this is the new, revised and expanded edition. Clean, bright copy.

Innocents In Africa: An American Family's Storyby: Pifer, Drury

Innocents In Africa: An American Family's Story
by: Pifer, Drury

Hardcover. NY, Harcourt Brace , 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Illustrated with 16 pages of black and white photographs, 338 pages. With wry humor and sharp observation, playwright Pifer elegantly mixes memory and research to reconstruct the world of his South African boyhood from 1933 to 1945. Pifer's father, an idealistic mining engineer in search of challenge and stability during the Depression, found it in Africa, but his earnest American egalitarianism soon put him in conflict with Afrikaner mine overseers, and his career under magnate Sir Ernest Oppenheimer stalled. The author deftly evokes his family--"my mother had the freedom of a disobedient daughter"--and the isolation of the desert town of Oranjemund. The book is even more resonant in its snapshots of mid-century Southern Africa: the still-simmering enmity between Afrikaners and the English; the ripples from Hitler's war in what prior to WW I had been the German territory of South West Africa (currently Namibia). Pifer's knowing account of the travails of servants--"the chasm that exists between white mistress and African maid"--still rings true today. Clean copy.

Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity, and Adoption by: Kennedy, Randall

Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity, and Adoption
by: Kennedy, Randall

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. With the same piercing intelligence as the bestselling Say it Loud!, Interracial Intimacies hits a nerve at the center of American society: race relations and our most intimate ties to each other. Analyzing the tremendous changes in the history of America's racial dynamics, Randall Kennedy challenges us to examine how prejudices and biases still fuel fears and inform our sexual, marital, and family choices. He takes us from the injustices of the slave era up to present-day battles over race matching adoption policies, which seek to pair children with adults of the same race. He tackles such subjects as the presence of sex in racial politics, the historic role of legal institutions in policing racial boundaries, and the real and imagined pleasures that have attended interracial intimacy. James Ensor: The Complete Paintingsby: Tricot, Xavier

James Ensor: The Complete Paintings
by: Tricot, Xavier

Hardcover. Germany, Hatje Cantz, reprint, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 480 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket with slip case. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Color/ Black and white pictures throughout. Coinciding with renewed interest in James Ensor, this catalogue raisonne comes as an essential and definitive volume for Ensor buffs and all serious libraries of modern art. A legend in his own lifetime, Ensor (1860-1949) was--alongside Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch--a fearless independent whose work led directly to the development of German Expressionism and French Surrealism. Ensor achieved fame as the "painter of masks," and for his bizarre still lifes and grotesque carnival scenes, in harsh, contrasting, brilliant colors, evolving out of the traditional Flemish dance of death. Now, the reader can explore the Belgian painter's oeuvre thoroughly, in this opulently illustrated, full-color, slipcased catalogue raisonne. A comprehensive illustrated chronology offers additional details about the artist's life and work, and forms an integral part of this splendid, highly valuable contribution to art historical research, ensuring the legacy of a great artist who continues to inspire contemporary art.
