Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Rollby: Peter Guralnick

Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll
by: Peter Guralnick

Hardcover. NY, Little, Brown and Company, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 763 pages, b&w illustrations. From the author of the critically acclaimed Elvis Presley biography: Last Train to Memphis brings us the life of Sam Phillips, the visionary genius who singlehandily steered the revolutionary path of Sun Records. The music that he shaped in his tiny Memphis studio with artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, introduced a sound that had never been heard before. He brought forth a singular mix of black and white voices passionately proclaiming the vitality of the American vernacular tradition while at the same time declaring, once and for all, a new, integrated musical day. With extensive interviews and firsthand personal observations extending over a 25-year period with Phillips, along with wide-ranging interviews with nearly all the legendary Sun Records artists, Guralnick gives us an ardent, unrestrained portrait of an American original as compelling in his own right as Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, or Thomas Edison.

Sambo Sahib: The Story of Helen Bannerman author of Little Black Sambo by: Elizabeth Hay

Sambo Sahib: The Story of Helen Bannerman author of Little Black Sambo
by: Elizabeth Hay

Hardcover. NY, Barnes & Noble, reprint, 1981, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 194 pages. Includes a bibliography of Bannerman's books and 47 reproductions of the first British and first American editions and her illustrations for them. Phyllis Yuill and Justin Schiller helped with the publishing history and supplied illustrations. Hay shows that it was the illustrations of later artists that provoked the controversy over THE STORY OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO, not Bannerman's original text or pictures. Bound in the original gilt-stamped red boards. From the dust jacket: "This first biography of Helen Bannerman covers much new ground and is based on the vast collection of letters to the children, usually lovingly illustrated, in the possession of the Bannerman family. As well as telling the story of one of the most popular children's books of all time, Elizabeth Hay's biography offers an intimate picture of the daily life of a British memsahib in the heyday of the Raj." by: Ignacio Guti

Hardcover. Charta, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages, color and b&w photographs. In the introduction to this volume, Chicago-based photographer Sandro Miller writes, "The people of Cuba provided me with faces that told a million stories--stories of war, of love, of heartache and pain, of hard work and determination--faces beaten up by the sun and the heat, but most of all faces that still had pride running deep within the pores of their skin." Miller was granted official permission to photograph Cuban athletes despite the ban, in place since 1959, on photographing sports figures in that country. Imagine Cuba 1999-2007 collects Miller's lush color and black-and-white portraits of athletes, young and old, against the backdrop of Cuba's streets and gyms, along with his sensitive diaristic narrative.

Scoop. A Novel About Journalists by: Evelyn Waugh

Scoop. A Novel About Journalists
by: Evelyn Waugh

Hardcover. London, Chapman & Hall, 1st, 1938, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, publisher's red and black marble-patterned cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Scoop is a humorous novel in which Waugh satirizes foreign correspondence and sensational journalism. Specifically, it tells the story of William Boot, an inexperienced journalist and author of a nature column for The Beast. This real life reporter was identified as Lord Deeds. Boot is mistakenly identified as his novelist cousin and sent to the fictional East African country of Ishmaelia to cover its socialist insurrection. Ironically, Boot's naivete allows him to get the real "scoop" not reported by more experienced journalists. Notably, Scoop is based on Waugh's own experiences working as a journalist for the British Daily Mail during Mussolini's 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. Clean, square copy.

Scriptural Ecclesiastical and Historical View of Slavery from the Days of the Patriarch Abraham to the Nineteenth Century Addressed to The Right Rev. Alonzo Potter
by:

Hardcover. NY, W. I. Pooley & Co., 1st., 1864, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, embossed brown cloth with gilt design on spine, 376 pages. Hopkins was the first Protestant Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont. Writing after the Emancipation Proclamation had turned the sectional conflict into a war against slavery, he argues in detail that slavery is not forbidden by scripture and hence is not a sin. Deals with the history of slavery, beginning with the Biblical view and slavery of circumstances, and its comparison to the Southern system at this time during the Civil War. Chapter XXX deals with Man-stealing, of which, the author asserts, the Southern States had nothing to do, with the title of the Southern masters shown to be as good as the titles of the North to their lands taken from the Indians. Following chapters also deal specifically with the Golden Rule, the treatment of slaves, testimonies of the Southern clergy, and ultimately a view from the author in favor of the practice of slaveholding. Crease to front board hardly noticeable from the outside but visible inside front cover. Otherwise a tight, clean copy.
