Robert Mapplethorpe: Black Bookby: Robert Mapplethorpe and Ntozake Shange

Robert Mapplethorpe: Black Book
by: Robert Mapplethorpe and Ntozake Shange

Softcover. NY, St Martin's Press, 3rd pr., 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 9 3/4 " - 12" tall. Foreword by Ntozake Shange. 91 full-page plates in black-and-white by Robert Mapplethorpe; from the inside of the front cover: "Mapplethorpe's exquisitely printed pictures of both gay and straight males are explicit and erotic. In their use of flattering lights and lavish deep-toned printing, they openly declare their bold belief in the esthetic equality of the male as model. But Mapplethorpe's pictures ironically confirm the Kenneth Clark doctrine: despite their smart, gleaming finish, they hail the body divine in the most traditional manner--with the sexes swapped." Robert Mapplethorpe: The Black Bookby: Robert Mapplethorpe and Ntozake Shange

Robert Mapplethorpe: The Black Book
by: Robert Mapplethorpe and Ntozake Shange

Hardcover. Schirmer/Mosel, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 108 pages. A classic, indeed perhaps the best of the Mapplethorpe books. And for many most certainly the most typical Mapplethorpe, now available once again thanks to this re-edition. The Black Book, first published in 1986, presents 96 formally stringent and highly erotic nudes, all of them photographs of black men, either as full figures, or staged as details, as fragments of their bodies. Stylized as classical statues or provocatively in all their presence and sensuous radiance. Black-and-white photography was Mapplethorpe's preferred medium. And his obsessive aesthetics was based on completely mastering it, as this enabled him to visualize any number of tonal gradations and penetrate deep into the very pores of the gleaming black skin. It is a method that reached a climax in these images. The Black Book, Mapplethorpe s homage to the black male body, has always been one of the most important visual contributions to the discussion on beauty, sensuality, and sexuality in photography.

Rolling Stones Fans
by: Joseph Szabo

Hardcover. Bologna IT, Damiani , 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 128 pages. In 1978 two of Joseph Szabo's high school students invited him to join them at a Rolling Stones concert at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Sensing a promising photo opportunity, Szabo agreed, packing three 35mm cameras and plenty of black-and-white film. Some 90,000 Rolling Stones fans converged on the stadium for the concert, where Szabo captured them drinking, kissing, smoking, dancing and hanging out. Their young subjects transported by the music, the drugs, the alcohol and the community, Szabo's Rolling Stones Fans photographs show unguarded moments of absorption and abandon in the sublimity of the rock and roll gig. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Roy Lichtenstein: The Black-and-White Drawings, 1961-1968by: Isabelle Dervaux , Graham Bader, et al.

Roy Lichtenstein: The Black-and-White Drawings, 1961-1968
by: Isabelle Dervaux , Graham Bader, et al.

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Between 1961 and 1968, at the height of the Pop art movement, Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) created about 50 large black-and-white drawings. Not only was their imagery, culled from consumer culture, entirely new--baked potatoes, ads for foot medication and BB Guns--but so was their treatment, which drew on the rudimentary character of cheaply printed commercial drawings. Conceived independently from Lichtenstein's paintings, these drawings recast illustrations from newspaper ads and comic books into works of keen visual intensity, curiously echoing the clean-edge aesthetic of 1960s geometric abstraction. "Drawing is the basis of my art," Lichtenstein later affirmed; "It is where my thinking takes place." Published for an exhibition at the Morgan Library in New York, this richly illustrated publication offers 120 color illustrations, plus essays on Lichtenstein's technique and on his little-known 1967 Aspen project, in which the artist transformed a room into a black-and-white cartoon drawing.

Roy Thomas Presents Rulah Jungle Goddess Vol. 2
by: Thomas, Roy

Hardcover. London, PS publishers, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with no dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to covers. Color and Black and white pictures throughout. Rulah first appeared in Zoot Comics #7 back in June 1947 and she's generally regarded as being the brainchild of Matt Baker and, some time later, Jack Kamen and Ghastly Graham Ingels. Collects Rulah #17-27, August 1948 to June 1949. These are typical Good Girl stories of simplistic morality and mega-violence, with a bit of erotic sizzle. Rulah defends people's rights and fights evil. But she was a bit different than the standard "Good Girl Art" stuff of that era. Most of her stories feature a bad girl so there are a lot of catfights.

Hardcover. UK, PS publishers, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with no dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to covers. Color and Black and white pictures throughout. She may still be everyone's favourite yellow-tressed leopard-skin-clad Jungle Jane but, having made her first appearance almost 80 years ago (courtesy of Will Eisner and 'Jerry' Iger in the British mag Wags #1), Sheena, Queen of the Jungle could be forgiven for being somewhat less spritely swinging through the trees righting wrongs and wielding her knife. In 1938, she made it Stateside with her first showing in Jungle Comics #1 where she settled happily in every issue (plus a decade in her own title) until April 1953. There have been other incarnations, of course, but it's this classic material that strikes at the very heart of Good Girl Art! Collects issues #11-18, Spring 1951 to Winter 1952.

Runaway Slaves: Rebels on the Plantation
by: Franklin, John Hope & Schweninger, Loren

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 455 pages, b&w illustrations. From John Hope Franklin, America's foremost African American historian, comes this groundbreaking analysis of slave resistance and escape. A sweeping panorama of plantation life before the Civil War, this book reveals that slaves frequently rebelled against their masters and ran away from their plantations whenever they could. For generations, important aspects about slave life on the plantations of the American South have remained shrouded. Historians thought, for instance, that slaves were generally pliant and resigned to their roles as human chattel, and that racial violence on the plantation was an aberration. In this precedent setting book, John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger demonstrate that, contrary to popular belief, significant numbers of slaves did in fact frequently rebel against their masters and struggled to attain their freedom. By surveying a wealth of documents, such as planters' records, petitions to county courts and state legislatures, and local newspapers, this book shows how slaves resisted, when, where, and how they escaped, where they fled to, how long they remained in hiding, and how they survived away from the plantation. Of equal importance, it examines the reactions of the white slaveholding class, revealing how they marshaled considerable effort to prevent runaways, meted out severe punishments, and established patrols to hunt down escaped slaves. Clean copy.
