Felicien Rops, Graphics, Irreverent and Erotic
by: Felicien Rops, Lee Revens, J. K. Huysmans

Hardcover. NY, Land's End Press, 1st, 1968, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Fair, Hardcover, 1968 stated on both the cover and copyright pages. 13 x 9.5 inches, black cloth with gilt design and lettering to the cover and spine. 288 pages. This book provides a selection of Rops' graphics with notes on his life by Lee Revens. Felicien Rops (1833 1898) was a prominent figure in 19th-century Belgium. His art is characterized by satirical, demonic, and erotic themes, often challenging societal norms and hypocrisy. Rops works hold a mirror to contemporary society, exposing its repressive standards and moral contradictions. His art oscillates between sensuality, death, and satanism, making him a key figure in the late 19th-century decadent movement. No markings.

The Figurative Pollockby: Josef Helfenstein , Nina Zimmer, et al.

The Figurative Pollock
by: Josef Helfenstein , Nina Zimmer, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, gray cloth with yellow band, 248 pages. This beautiful book focuses on the distinctive and expressive power of Jackson Pollock's figurative paintings, drawings, and prints; a rarely studied aspect of his artistic career. Jackson Pollock's name has become synonymous with the abstract drip paintings that he famously created on the floor of his studio. Before these paintings, from the 1930s to the late 1940s, Pollock created figurative works, studying at one time under the painter Thomas Hart Benton and with the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Pollock took up figuration again after his famous drip paintings. This book starts with the early decades and also treats Pollock's re-adoption of the figuration after his renowned abstract paintings. The Figurative Pollock features 100 paintings and works on paper. From rolling landscapes to experiments in non-Western totemic painting to sketches and drawings fueled by Jungian analysis, the enormous range of Pollock's early and late work is presented here. Brimming with confidence and a sense of freedom, distinct yet so easily related to Pollock's most famous oeuvre, these works contribute to an understanding of how the artist found his voice.

Stilettoby: Caroline Cox

Stiletto
by: Caroline Cox

Hardcover. NY, Harper Design, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 176 pages illustrated in color. Caroline Cox presents the various incarnations of the stiletto since its invention as a fantasy shoe brought to life by the flair and skill of shoemakers Vivier, Perugia, Ferragamo, and Jourdan in the early 1950s. Assertively modern, stilettos released women from the utilitarian wartime fashion of the 1940s, offering streamlined sophistication and glamour to women the world over. As the decade progressed the heel became saucier and higher, worn by starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. By the end of the 1950s the heel was being worn by "bad girls" and had become a weapon of female power. The 1970s took the stiletto's associations with sex and death and turned it into a fetish object, eulogized by artists Allen Jones and Eric Stanton. 1980s power dressers brought the stiletto back into the fashion arena, and today heels designed by Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, and Gina are the badge of celebrity status and fashion savvy. Mild wear to dust jacket, clean copy.

Origins of Comics, The: From William Hogarth to Winsor McCayby: Smolderen, Thierry/Bart Beaty, et al.

Origins of Comics, The: From William Hogarth to Winsor McCay
by: Smolderen, Thierry/Bart Beaty, et al.

Hardcover. Jackson MS, University Press of Mississippi, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Hardcover, 168 pages. In The Origins of Comics: From William Hogarth to Winsor McCay, Thierry Smolderen presents a cultural landscape whose narrative differs in many ways from those presented by other historians of the comic strip. Rather than beginning his inquiry with the popularly accepted "sequential art" definition of the comic strip, Smolderen instead wishes to engage with the historical dimensions that inform that definition. His goal is to understand the processes that led to the twentieth-century comic strip, the highly recognizable species of picture stories that he sees crystallizing around 1900 in the United States. Featuring close readings of the picture stories, caricatures, and humoristic illustrations of William Hogarth, Rodolphe Topffer, Gustave Dore, and their many contemporaries, Smolderen establishes how these artists were immersed in a very old visual culture in which images--satirical images in particular--were deciphered in a way that was often described as hieroglyphical. Across eight chapters, he acutely points out how the effect of the printing press and the mass advent of audiovisual technologies (photography, audio recording, and cinema) at the end of the nineteenth century led to a new twentieth-century visual culture. In tracing this evolution, Smolderen distinguishes himself from other comics historians by following a methodology that explains the present state of the form of comics on the basis of its history, rather than presenting the history of the form on the basis of its present state. This study remaps the history of this influential art form.

R. Crumb Sketchbook. Volume 4: Dec. 1982-Dec, 1989by: Crumb, Robert

R. Crumb Sketchbook. Volume 4: Dec. 1982-Dec, 1989
by: Crumb, Robert

Hardcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, 2025, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Color frontispiece. Black & white illustrations throughout on every page. 11" high X 8" wide, 448 pages. The perfect tribute to the world's favorite dirty old man. It spans the years 1982 to 1989, a period when the artist was comfortably ensconced in rural California, raising his young daughter Sophie, who appears throughout this volume. But Crumb was still Crumb, declaring in one drawing, above a lovingly rendered tree, "As I get older I get more twisted, convoluted, depraved, cynical, embittered, self-centered, jaded, debauched, ruthless, greedy, conceited, set-in-my-ways, long-winded, absent-minded, prejudiced, closed-minded, misanthropic, nervous..." To prove this self-flagellating analysis he fills the pages with his signature perversions (in country settings), scathing social commentary, cruel self-portraits, experimental cubism... and some lovely sylvan landscape. His mastery of the Rapidograph pen is at its zenith here in his 40s, Clean, still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

A is for Archive: Warhol

A is for Archive: Warhol

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) remains an icon of the 20th century and a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. He also was an obsessive collector of things large and small, ordinary and quirky. Since 1994, The Andy Warhol Museum has studied and safeguarded the artist's archive encompassing hundreds of thousands of these objects, at turns strange, amusing, and poignant. From this array, many of these items have been researched and described in this book for the first time. For the myriad fans of Warhol and his quixotic world, as well as those who never understood the artist before, this volume is essential and unforgettable. Written by Matt Wrbican, the foremost authority on Warhol's personal collection, A is for Archive features curated selections from this collection, shedding light on the artist's work and motivations, as well as on his personality and private life. The volume is organized alphabetically, honoring Warhol's own use of a whimsical alphabetical structure: "A is for Autograph" (a selection of signed objects, many of which influenced his most popular works), "F is for Fashion" (featuring his collections of cowboy boots, neckties, and jackets), "S is for Stamp" (works of art by Warhol and others relating to stamps and mailed items), and "Z is for Zombie" (a grouping of photographs and ephemera of Warhol in various disguises: drag, robot, zombie, clown). The book also features an insightful essay by renowned art critic and Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik.

Softcover. London, Unicorn Press Ltd, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 96 pages. Softcover. Very clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrapper edges. Many color illustrations and photographs throughout. Artist David Shillinglaw is as comfortable in the street as in the studio, as likely to paint on found objects as on canvas, as interested in tiny hand-made artist's books as in large-scale public murals. His mural in the Olympic Park in East London is the longest mural ever commissioned in Great Britain, while his brilliantly inventive creations enliven construction hoardings throughout London's changing cityscape. The Dance of 1000 Faces is the first book to gather a significant number of Shillinglaw's works. It presents his art in full color in all its many forms: not only paintings and murals, but journals drawings, sketches, and more. It reveals Shillinglaw's particular genius for depictions--and distortions--of the human face, grimacing and grinning, shifting and shaping as it becomes no one and everyone at once.

American Goddess: Jean Patchettby: Lilly, Robert & Lois

American Goddess: Jean Patchett
by: Lilly, Robert & Lois

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrink wrap. Jean Patchett was both model and muse, a famous face from New York's vibrant midcentury popular culture and the most successful high-fashion model of her time. A small-town girl from rural Maryland, Patchett had no firm ambitions until a friend suggested she drop out of college and go to New York and become a model. Within a year Jean had left school, met model agent Eileen Ford, and begun a career that saw her photographed by the greatest photographers of her era, with more than 58 magazine covers over 14 years. "A young American goddess in Paris couture," was Irving Penn's epitaph for the model he photographed for a classic series in Lima, Peru where, pushed past their limits, Patchett and Penn created passionate art with a possible passionate relationship as well. Penn would go on to create stunning images of Patchett forVogueand later, for a series of nudes he called "the major artistic experience of my life." Letters from Patchett to her family show a young woman in love with her life and eager to share the thrills and struggles of her career. Quotes from photographers Cecil Beaton, John Rawlings, William Helburn, Jerry Schatzberg, and Francesco Scavullo reflect their admiration for her technical skills as a model as well as her unique beauty. A work diary from 1951 allows us to see how-and with whom-she worked from day to day.

Julian Opie: Recent Worksby: Timothy Clark (Author), Sandy Nairne (Author), Peter Noever (Editor)

Julian Opie: Recent Works
by: Timothy Clark (Author), Sandy Nairne (Author), Peter Noever (Editor)

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 160 pages. Known for his cool, clean, comics-inspired pictorial language, Julian Opie has been one of the leading figures in contemporary British art since the early 1980s. Equally at home in museum settings--like Tate Modern, the ICA Boston and MCA Chicago, where he has mounted recent one-person exhibitions and projects--and in collaboration with mainstream rock bands like Blur and U2, his work crosses media and genres with quiet, computer-assisted abandon. In the early days, Opie transgressed the boundaries between painting and sculpture by applying paint to the everyday articles he used in his steel objects. More recently he has experimented with digital technologies in the applied arts. Now, he is probably best-known for his hypnotically low-tech moving images generated by LCD and LED technologies. This volume assembles a representative collection of portraits, half-length figures and new works that draw from the motifs of baroque portraiture.
