Jean Hélion
by: Jean Hélion

Softcover. Paris / London, Paul Holberton, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 216 pages in color. Jean Helion (1904-1987) became a leading member of the international Abstraction-Creation group in the early 1930s. He then took abstraction to New York, where he advised the avant-garde collector A. E. Gallatin on purchases for his Gallery of Living Art, a crucial influence on the early phases of the developing New York School. In France after World War II, however, he evolved a unique language of painting, employing people and objects that are both contructivist and naturalistic--his own language of signs populated by shop-window dummies, newspaper readers, and startling nudes. In his return to figuration he may be compared to his close friends Balthus and Alberto Giacometti, even though his style is unique. This book is the first in English on the artist for some thirty years. Mild crease to front cover, otherwise a clean, bright copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Palazzo Te: Giulio Romano's Masterwork in Mantua
by: Ugo Bazzotti

Hardcover. NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 255 color plates. Built for Federico II Gonzaga Duke of Mantua between 1525 and 1536, Palazzo Te is the masterpiece of Renaissance artist, designer, and architect Giulio Romano, the most accomplished and favored of Raphael's pupils. The palace's interiors are replete with frescoes depicting imaginative scenes and trompe l'oeil fantasies of gods and heroes, fictive marble statues, and portraits of the Duke's favorite thoroughbreds. From the erotic scenes of the Sala di Psiche to the famous Sala di Giganti, based on the mythological defeat of the Titans by the gods of Olympus, the High Renaissance ideal of classical harmony and balance is overtaken by breathtaking illusionist techniques and images of giants, falling masonry, and the thunderbolts from the gods.

Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune: The Complete Sunday Newspaper Strips 1936-1937 (Vol. 2)
by: Crane, Roy

Hardcover. US, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 144 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to covers. In Captain Easy Vol. 2: The Complete Sunday Newspaper Strips, Roy Crane's Soldier of Fortune, Captain Easy, fights for gold in the frozen north, is mistaken for a bandit, protects a formula for artificial diamonds, is stranded on a desert island, visits the tiny Balkan country of Kleptomania, and faces a firing squad. Captain Easy hobnobs with millionaires and bums and beautiful girls (of course), and winds up in the middle of a full-scale war. In short, it's another rousing series of adventure and humor encapsulating the gallantry, derring-do, and rough-and-tumble innocence of a bygone era and a bygone genre, written and drawn with panache, and practically painted in a vibrant spectrum of colors that you have to see to believe.

Bootsie's Big '50s: a Dark Laughter collection
by: Ollie Harrington

Softcover. Camarillo CA, About Comics, 1st, 2021, Softcover, 154 pages, b&w cartoons. "Negro America's Favorite Cartoonist" That's what Langston Hughes called Ollie Harrington, whose cartoons and comic strips were a staple of America's Black newspapers for decades starting in the 1930s. In his single-panel series "Dark Laughter," Harrington brought out the vibrancy of Harlem life in its day, while serving some cutting looks at the politics of the time. At the heart of "Dark Laughter" is Bootsie, a cunning, conning, girl-chasing ne'er-do-well who is nonetheless beloved in his Harlem community... if often reluctantly. Bootsie is both the victim of the world's troubles and a frequent cause of them for others. Here's a collection of prime cartoons from the mid-1950s, drawn with the detailed joy that only Ol Harrington (who also worked as Oliver W. Harrington) could bring, finally available to a larger audience.

Gluck: Art and Identity
by: Amy de la Haye, Martin Pel, et al.

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Hannah Gluckstein (who called herself Gluck; 1895-1976) was a distinctive, original voice in the early evolution of modern art in Britain. This handsome book presents a major reassessment of Gluck's life and work, examining, among other things, the artist's numerous personal relationships and contemporary notions of gender and social history. Gluck's paintings comprise a full range of artistic genres--still life, landscape, portraiture--as well as images of popular entertainers. Financially independent and somewhat freed from social convention, Gluck highlighted her sexual identity, cutting her hair short and dressing as a man, and the artist is known for a powerful series of self-portraits that played with conventions of masculinity and femininity. Richly illustrated, this volume is a timely and significant contribution to gender studies and to the understanding of a complex and important modern painter.

The Cindy Sherman Effect Identity and Transformation in Contemporary Art
by: Ingried Brugger / Paul Clinton

Hardcover. Schirmer Mosel, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket,, 171 pages. Since the 1970s Cindy Sherman (born in Glen Ridge, NJ, in 1954) has caused a stir in the art world with her photographic self-stagings. From the beginning, Neither her subjects nor her artistic realization of acting as the director, photographer, and performer of her motifs have lost their relevance to this day. Quite the contrary: her multilayered examination of themes of identity and social cliches are hot topics in our age of increasingly public gender and transgender discussions. Entitled 'The Cindy Sherman Effect', an exhibition organized by Kunstforum Wien explores the influence of Cindy Sherman?s work on artists such as Sophie Calle, Pipilotti Rist, Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing, Candice Breitz, Zanele Muholi, Markus Schinwald, Douglas Gordon, Samuel Fosso and many more. The reasons why, if speculative, surely include our imminent environmental collapse and increasingly digitally mediated existence. Landscape Painting Now is the first book of its kind to take a global view of its subject, featuring more than eighty outstanding contemporary artists-both established and emerging-whose ages span seven decades and who hail from twenty-five different countries. Klimt and the Women of Vienna's Golden Age, 1900-1918
by: Tobias G. Natter

Hardcover. NY, Prestel , 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 320 pages. This authoritative and generously illustrated book highlights Gustav Klimt's portrayals of women in his work. Klimt was a central figure in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, and a crucial link between nineteenth-century Symbolism and Modernism. His sensual portrayals of women are among his most celebrated works and the focus of this book. Highlights of the publication include Klimt's most important society portraits, such as Serena Lederer (1899); Gertrud Loew (1902); Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907); Mada Primavesi (1913); Elisabeth Lederer (1914-16); and Ria Munk III (1917). These works cover the gamut of Klimt's portrait style, from his early ethereal works influenced by Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelite movement to his so-called "golden style," as well as his almost Fauvist depictions.

Automatic Woman:The Representation of Women in Surrealism
by: Katharine Conley

Hardcover. University of Nebraska, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with minor fading to edges, b&w illustrations, 179 pages. Contemporary feminist critics have often described Surrealism as a misogynist movement. In Automatic Woman, Katharine Conley addresses this issue, confirming some feminist allegations while qualifying and overturning others. Through insightful analyses of works by a range of writers and artists, Conley develops a complex view of Surrealist portrayals of Woman. Conley begins with a discussion of the composite image of Woman developed by such early male Surrealists as Andre Breton, Francis Picabia, and Paul Eluard. She labels that image "Automatic Woman"--a term that comprises views of Woman as provocative and revolutionary but also as a depersonalized object largely devoid of individuality and volition. This analysis largely confirms feminist critiques of Surrealism. The heart of the book, however, examines the writings of Leonora Carrington and Unica Zurn, two women in the Surrealist movement whose works, Conley argues, anticipate much contemporary feminist art and theory. In concluding, Conley shows how Breton's own views on women evolved in the course of his long career, arriving at last at a position far more congenial to contemporary feminists.

by: Tom Gauld

Hardcover. Drawn & Quarterly;, Hardcover in oblong decorated orange cloth covers. color comics/cartoons throughout. Tom Gauld returns with his wittiest and most trenchant collection of literary cartoons to date. Perfectly composed drawings are punctuated with the artist's signature brand of humour, hitting high and low. After all, Gauld is just as comfortable taking jabs at Jane Eyre and Game of Thrones. Some particularly favoured targets include the pretentious procrastinating novelist, the commercial mercenary of the dispassionate editor, the willful obscurantism of the vainglorious poet. Quake in the presence of the stack of bedside books as it grows taller! Gnash your teeth at the ever-moving deadline that the writer never meets! Quail before the critic's incisive dissection of the manuscript! And most importantly, seethe with envy at the paragon of creative productivity!

Hardcover. NY, Marvel, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 248 pages. Collects Marvel Westerns from the 1960s: Marvel Comics has a long history of producing comics in the western genre, going back as far as the 1940s, before the company was even called Marvel. Some of their most popular gunfighters, like the Rawhide Kid, Two-Gun Kid, and Kid Colt, even hung on well after the superhero explosion of the 1960s, but it's been a long time since Marvel put any effort into its western universe. In this volume they attempt to harken back to their cowboy glory days by publishing a four-issue series called Marvel Westerns, which combines classic 1960s stories by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby with 21st-century interpretations of Marvel's classic western heroes. This hardcover contains the four issues of that series, along with some supplemental material. The Later Paintings and Drawings of John Constable (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art) (2 Volumes)
by: Graham Reynolds /John Constable

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Two large hardcover volumes in bright dust jackets. 940 total pages. John Constable, one of the most beloved of British painters, is renowned for his poetic approach to nature and his extraordinary use of broken color. In this beautiful two-volume set, the dean of Constable scholars, Graham Reynolds, discusses all the paintings and drawings the artist produced between 1790 and 1816, both before and after his breakthrough into the original style that is the basis of his fame. Together with Reynolds`s award-winning The Later Paintings and Drawings of John Constable (1984), the books are a catalogue raisonne, of this artist`s monumental oeuvre. The two volumes, one of text and one of plates, describe and reproduce 1370 paintings and drawings in chronological order. They begin with Constable`s juvenilia and tentative experiments before he went to London in 1799 to become a professional artist. Next are some lesser-known works-elegant figure studies of girls, Constable`s first portraits, and his Lake District watercolors. Finally are the works after 1808-Dedham Vale: morning, Flatford Mill from a Lock on the Stour, A Summerland, The Stour Valley and Dedham Village, and the recently rediscovered The Wheatfield-works that made Constable a major force in British landscape painting. The volumes also include Constable`s numerous sketches of his homeland around East Bergholt and Dedham from this period, drawings on which he based his later masterpieces. An appendix records and reproduces, as addenda to The Later Paintings and Drawings, 94 works produced between 1817 and 1836 that have come to light since those books were published. Small 1/2" closed tear to front corner of dust jacket, otherwise a clean, crisp set. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossroads
by: Lee Jaffe, Franklin Sirmans, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrinkwrap. A rare and poignant compilation of photography and written anecdotes by American photographer and artist Lee Jaffe that captures his close friendship, collaboration, and travels with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat as they traversed Japan, Thailand, and Switzerland in 1983. Lee Jaffe, a cross-disciplinary visual artist, musician, and poet, took photos of his friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, when they traveled abroad in 1983. As a photographer, Jaffe had a connection to Basquiat, and their time spent together resulted in an archive of imagery that captured one of the art world's true legends through an unfiltered and authentic lens. Basquiat and Jaffe connected over reggae music at a mutual friend's art show. It was the early 1980s in New York, when the art scene was raw, complicated, and thriving, and Jaffe cultivated strong connections with cultural figures such as Basquiat, Bob Marley, and Peter Tosh. "For me, watching him [ Jean] paint reminded me of the times I would sit and play harmonica while Bob Marley, with his acoustic guitar, would be writing songs that were eventually to become classics," Jaffe says. "With Jean and Bob, it seemed like they were channeling inspiration coming from an otherworldly place." This beautiful volume presents snapshots of Basquiat: from the artist smiling on a bullet train to Kyoto and behind-the-scenes documentation of Basquiat creating artwork in St. Moritz, to poignant portraits that mirror his undeniable magnetism. These rare depictions of Basquiat come to life with Jaffe's unforgettable experiences of their friendship, collaborations, and travels detailed in private written memories and anecdotes. This insightful and moving illustrated volume captures the soul of the unedited, ambitious, young artist during the height of his short yet unprecedented artistic career.
