The stories in the latest volume of vintage Spirit exploits catch the masked crime fighter nine years into the series. Eisner, ever inventive, was still finding ways to keep things fresh, and a four-week arc sees the hero wandering exotic Pacific islands. There are some signs that Eisner may have been wearying of his headliner. In many tales here, including the celebrated "Ten Minutes," which counts down the final moments of a young man's life, the Spirit barely makes an appearance. As always, Eisner's much-imitated "cartoon noir" style finds him moving seamlessly from broad humor to high melodrama. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

George Booth, Edward Koren, Marisa Acocella Marchetto (creator of Cancer Vixen) and Gahan Wilson are among those confronting the Reaper. Some cartoons in the book have previously appeared in the New Yorker, but most are originals. Contributors range in age from their 30s to the 90-year-old Frank Modell. Various cartoons deal with the shock of baby boomers as their old age looms: Roz Chast depicts the body with a mind of its own, aging despite its owner's wishes; J.B. Handelsman draws an executive telling an older worker that the company encourages certain employees to die. But many of the cartoons celebrate the continuing vitality of seniors, such as Lee Lorenz's female astronaut who will be the first Gray Panther to walk on the moon. The hooded Grim Reaper is a continuing presence, but many cartoons are set in heaven or hell. In the back of the book, most of the contributors say who they would like to meet in the Great Beyond. In the late 1940s, the first half of the Venus series from Marvel Comics predecessors Timely and Atlas Comics was published as a lighthearted romance comic about the goddess Venus taking a job on Earth at a beauty magazine. Never a company to miss a trend, Atlas began introducing more science fiction elements in the 1950s, and eventually turned Venus' dating adventures into a straight-out horror anthology. Collected here, 70 years later and for the first time ever, is that swift-changing second half of the 19-issue run. Future Marvel stars Bill Everett (seven issues) and Werner Roth (three issues) take Venus to heights of four-color weirdness and pre-Code horror ghastliness. Everett in particular is given free rein and seizes the opportunity: writing, drawing, and lettering twenty ghoulish and goofy masterpieces, including classics like "Hangman's House," "The Day Venus Vanished," "The House of Terror," "The Sealed Spectors," Tidal Wave of Terror," and the phantasmagorical "Cartoonist's Calamity!" These stories showcase the brilliant draftsmanship and storytelling of Everett, one of the giants of the 1940s and '50's comic book industry. His slick, fluid line rendered at Timely/Atlas, from his seminal god-child Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, to the atomic age Marvel Boy, is some of the finest pre-Code horror this side of E.C.'s Graham Ingels. He is best known for his robust paintings of urban life in New York and London, a hallmark of Ashcan art, and for his theater and residential murals and interior-design projects. His style varied considerably over the years, from gritty and realistic to decorative and rococo.

While the dialogue and artwork and plots are very basic and crude which is normal for early comics, it does show how Batman started with the basic familiar origin story still there. This issue concentrates on the work of just two artists, Gustaf Tenggren (1896-1970) & Frank Brangwyn (1967-1956). Tenggren originated in Sweden but emigrated to the USA in 1920, where he continued to provide illustrations for Swedish illustrated editions. Frank Brangwyn hailed from Bruges, Belgium. He moved to England with his English family to complete his education. Both artists work is illustrated with detailed texts to accompany the many illustrations. Clean copy.
