Daniele Buetti: Maybe You Can Be One of Usby: Jacqueline Burckhardt, Gianni Jetzer, et al.

Daniele Buetti: Maybe You Can Be One of Us
by: Jacqueline Burckhardt, Gianni Jetzer, et al.

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 240 pages. Swiss artist Daniele Buetti is notorious for his defaced photographs of supermodels, which feature scars, tattoos and disenchanted fragments of text. Buetti has been questioning the socially determined constructs of beauty and the commodification of sexuality and glamour since the 1980s. His altered photographs--large-scale C-prints on aluminum or light-boxes--have messages like "How much is my body worth?" and "What shall I hope for?" scrawled across them in electric colors. Buetti also often energetically scratches out or draws over portions of the image in a manner that recalls the destructive doodling of a truculent adolescent. Maybe You Can Be One of Us focuses on Buetti's recent drawings, videos, sculptures and installations. In these newer pieces, the fashion models give way to enigmatic illustrative symbols, such as two disembodied hands conjuring a puff of smoke. This publication accompanies an exhibition of new work at the Swiss Institute for Contemporary Art in New York.

VIP: The Mad World of Virgil Partchby: Virgil Partch and Jonathan Barli

VIP: The Mad World of Virgil Partch
by: Virgil Partch and Jonathan Barli

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 240 pages. Only a few months after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor and the same year that Albert Camus offered the world his bleak vision of man's existence by introducing his philosophical dictum of The Absurd, Virgil Partch burst onto the scene with his own twist on the phrase. Partch was a cartoonist who offered comic counterpoint to the grim headlines and a unique perspective on human nature in the pages of the nation's most popular magazines. Known to millions by his jazzy signature, VIP, this comic genius ushered in a new era of the gag cartoon-zany, sometimes surreal, always hilarious-that inspired a generation of fellow cartoonists starting in the 1940s and '50s. His madcap style of humor was reflected in the cutting-edge comedic sensibilities of Burns & Allen, Jack Benny, Ernie Kovacs, Bob & Ray, Stan Freberg, and Jean Shepherd, and would position Partch as one of the most prolific "gag-men" of his day. VIP contributed to an astonishing array of magazines, wrote gags for other cartoonists, illustrated books, album covers, and advertisements, and adorned merchandise including, appropriately, cocktail glasses.VIP: The Mad World of Virgil Partch is the first time Partch's life and career has been treated in full, collecting amazing artwork from the entire range of his inspired career and featuring his own writings.

Andy Warhol: Shadows and Other Signs of Life: Anniversary Notes for Andy Warhol
by: Buchloh, Benjamin

Hardcover. Koln GR, Walther Konig, 1st, 2008, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: None, Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. Hardcover, 118 pages, no dust jacket issued. English and French text. On the occasion of what would have been Andy Warhol's eightieth birthday, in 2008, this exquisitely produced volume examines one essential but miraculously under-studied element of the artist's work: The shadow. Beginning with photographic still lifes of skulls and taxidermied animals, then moving on to male nudes, tabletops and table settings, celebrity portraits, gems, fruits and many amazing still lifes of hammers, sickles, shoes and other ordinary objects that presage Fischli & Weiss' Equilibres by several years, Shadows and Other Signs of Life concludes with Warhol's photographs of actual shadows and an outstanding selection of abstract silkscreens, stenciled works and piss paintings. Published to accompany the eponymous exhibition at Paris' Galerie Chantal Crousel, this volume contains illuminating short texts--Anniversary Notes for Andy Warhol--by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh.

Art in Timeby: Nadel, Dan

Art in Time
by: Nadel, Dan

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 304 pages. Art In Time is a companion to Dan Nadel's previous book, Art Out of Time. In this engaging and smart volume, Nadel focuses on the lesser-known comic works by celebrated icons of the industry, like H.G. Peter (the artist behind Wonder Woman), John Stanley (the writer and artist for Little Lulu), Harry Lucey (one of the artists behind Archie), Jesse Marsh (the artist for Tarzan), and Bill Everett (best know for his characters Sub Mariner and Dr. Strange). Art In Time reprints a wonderful selection of complete comic book stories that represent some of the best, but obscure adventure stories from the 1940s through the 1980s. Each comic highlights the fully developed style unique to each artist and celebrate these little known comic gems. Art In Time is designed as a reading book, allowing fans to catch up on some of best, but forgotten, work in comics' history.

Hardcover. NY, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2nd pr., 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with orange cloth spine. 232 pages. From the prize-winning author of The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt, a stunning graphic narrative of newly discovered stories from Jewish teens on the cusp of WWII.When I Grow Up is New Yorker cartoonist Ken Krimstein's new graphic nonfiction book, based on six of hundreds of newly discovered, never-before-published autobiographies of Eastern European Jewish teens on the brink of WWII-found in 2017 hidden in a Lithuanian church cellar. Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographsby: William F. Stapp

Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographs
by: William F. Stapp

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press , 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 184 pages. ARTnews, the oldest art magazine in America and the most widely circulated art magazine in the world, is celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary in 2002. This attractive book celebrates and commemorates this milestone event, presenting one hundred of the best photographic portraits commissioned by and reproduced in the magazine since its origin. These fascinating photographs chronicle the history of the magazine and present a "who's who" of people who have shaped the art world over the last century. Portrait of the Art World includes photographs of many of the great European and American artists of the twentieth century, including George Bellows, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, and Alice Neel. The photographers-often as fascinating as their subjects-range from Zaida Ben-Yusuf, Alice Boughton (early members of Alfred Stieglitz's circle), and Jessie Tarbox Beals (perhaps the first woman photojournalist) to Stieglitz himself, Man Ray, and Cecil Beaton. Contemporary photographers featured in the book include Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Arnold Newman, Richard Avedon, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The book also presents an essay by William F. Stapp exploring the historical context of portrait photography in ARTnews; an essay on the history of ARTnews by Pete Hamill; and an essay by Milton Esterow, the current editor and publisher of ARTnews, discussing his personal view of the magazine. This handsomely illustrated book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the New-York Historical Society from September 27, 2002, to January 5, 2003, which will then travel to Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco

Erwin Blumenfeld: Nothing but a Berliner: Dada Montages 1916-1933
by: Adkins, Helen

Hardcover. Ostfildern GR, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2009-03-01, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages, 227 photographic illustrations, including 97 in color. Like new in publisher's shrinkwrap. Most people are unfamiliar with Blumenfeld's early work, the often bitingly satiric Dada photomontages and collages he produced between 1916 and 1933. This book, put together by Helen Adkins, renowned expert on the Berlin Dada movement, is the first to provide a study and a survey of these early works. Blumenfeld did not intend for these works to be shown publicly, as they were primarily personal gifts to his friends and acquaintance, or were enclosed in love letters to his fiancee.
