Fabric of Enchantment: Batik from the North Coast of Javaby: Heringa Rens & Harmen C. Veldhuisen

Fabric of Enchantment: Batik from the North Coast of Java
by: Heringa Rens & Harmen C. Veldhuisen

Hardcover. Weatherhill, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 239 pages. 266 illustrations including 163 in full color. The batik designs of Java's North Coast are particularly varied in both design and color. With their fanciful, highly imaginative motifs and luminous tints, they are more immediately appealing than the sombre blue and brown batik of Central Java. It was a chance encounter in a Hong Kong antique shop that inspired photojournalist Inger McCabe Elliot to devote over three decades to assembling one of the world's finest collections, which she presented to the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in 1991. This volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum, celebrates Elliott's gift and presents her collection. Essays by authorities on the subject examine the 82 featured batik textiles from historical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives. The essays are followed by biographies of some of the most distinguished batik designers and entrepreneurs and a descriptive catalogue of the batiks. Appendices document design formats and motifs, as well as the complete production process of North Coast batiks. Clean copy,

Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Fashionby: Alfons Kaiser

Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Fashion
by: Alfons Kaiser

NY, Cernunnos/Abrams, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Fashion, journalist Alfons Kaiser, who knew Lagerfeld personally for many years, introduces readers to the public and private life of the charismatic fashion designer. Kaiser explores the many eras of Lagerfeld's life: the youthful outsider in the north German flatlands; the urbane genius in Paris; the tireless draftsman; the enthusiastic photographer; the passionate book collector; and the disciplined Prussian workaholic. What is behind this larger-than-life figure who, despite a massively public persona, kept his own life story a secret? Drawing from many previously untapped sources, this biography investigates the man behind the persona: the precocious boy who preferred to draw in the attic than play with his peers; the son who quarreled with his parents but never got away from them; Yves Saint Laurent's competitor, whom he outshone in the end; the brother, uncle, friend--and finally the partner of Jacques de Bascher, the great love of his life. Remainder dot top edge otherwise like new.

Heaven on Earth: Tiepolo Masterpieces of the Wurzburg Years by: Kruckmann, Peter O.

Heaven on Earth: Tiepolo Masterpieces of the Wurzburg Years
by: Kruckmann, Peter O.

Hardcover. Munich/NY, Prestel, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 143 pages with 100 color and 79 b&w illustrations. In 1750 the Venetian painter Giambattista Tiepolo arrived in Wurzburg, capital of the small German principality of Franconia. Its ruler, Prince-Bishop Carl Philipp von Greiffenclau, had commissioned him to decorate the Kaisersaal, one of the state rooms in his palace, the Residenz. Later extended to include the decoration of the Residenz's staircase, the commission resulted in a series of frescos that are numbered among the greatest glories of Baroque painting. Created by the last major representative of the Venetian tradition in painting, the frescos in the Wurzburg Residenz are a truly epochal work of art. They form the culmination of a venerable tradition of fresco decoration initiated by Giotto over four hundred years earlier and, in their marriage of mythological and historical subject-matter, constitute a monument to the dying age of absolutism. In his highly readable text Peter O. Kruckmann tells the story of how Tiepolo came to receive the commission, explores in detail the thematic and artistic intricacies of the frescos, and documents their genesis as a continuous process, from the preliminary sketches to the finished works. Revoliutsiia! Demonstratsiia!: Soviet Art Put to the Test
by: Matthew S. Witkovsky, Devin Fore, et al.

Hardcover. Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Hardcover,324 pages. Published on the centenary of the Russian Revolution, this landmark book gathers information from the forefront of current research in early Soviet art, providing a new understanding of where art was presented, who saw it, and how the images incorporated and conveyed Soviet values. More than 350 works are grouped into areas of critical importance for the production, reception, and circulation of early Soviet art: battlegrounds, schools, the press, theaters, homes and storefronts, factories, festivals, and exhibitions. Paintings by El Lissitzky and Liubov Popova are joined by sculptures, costumes and textiles, decorative arts, architectural models, books, magazines, films, and more. Also included are rare and important artifacts, among them a selection of illustrated children's notes by Joseph Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Allilueva, as well as reproductions of key exhibition spaces such as the legendary Obmokhu (Constructivist) exhibition in 1921; Aleksandr Rodchenko's 'Workers' Club in 1925; and a Radio-Orator kiosk for live, projected, and printed propaganda designed by Gustav Klutsis in 1922. Bountifully illustrated, this book offers an unprecedented, cross-disciplinary analysis of two momentous decades of Soviet visual culture.

Kirby: King of Comics by: Evanier, Mark

Kirby: King of Comics
by: Evanier, Mark

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. Color illustrations. Jack Kirby created or co-created some of comic books' most popular characters including Captain America, The X-Men, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, The Mighty Thor, Darkseid, and The New Gods. More significantly, he created much of the visual language for fantasy and adventure comics. There were comics before Kirby, but for the most part their page layout, graphics, and visual dynamic aped what was being done in syndicated newspaper strips. Almost everything that was different about comic books began in the forties on the drawing table of Jack Kirby. This is his story by one who knew him well-the authorized celebration of the one and only "King of Comics" and his groundbreaking work.

Pop Art Portraitsby: Paul Moorhouse and Dominic Sandbrook

Pop Art Portraits
by: Paul Moorhouse and Dominic Sandbrook

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Reaching its pinnacle during the era of Marilyn Monroe and James Bond, Haight-Ashbury and Swinging London, Pop art reflected the ideals and aspirations of a generation. By the 1960s the movement's bold imagery and style had become inseparable from the new consumer culture. This important book looks at British and American Pop art through the lens of portraiture, providing a fresh perspective on the movement and its innovative artists. Blurring the boundaries between "high" and "low" culture, Pop artists including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, and Peter Blake elevated portraiture to a new position. Author Paul Moorhouse explores the artists' engagement with portraits; their shared fascination with fame; their use of images from advertisements, rock music, films, and print sources; and the ways in which the British and American schools of Pop evolved and influenced one another. Bringing together key works from the peak years of Pop, this extensively illustrated book demonstrates how the conventions of portraiture were redefined as Pop artists transformed familiar images into transcendent works of art.
