L.A. Raw: Abject Expressionism in Los Angeles, 1945-1980: From Rico Lebrun to Paul McCarthy
by: Michael Duncan , Peter Selz, et al.

Hardcover. 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 208 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Until recently, the figurative artists who dominated the Los Angeles art scene of the 1940s and 50s had largely been written out of art history. L.A. Raw is an attempt to right that wrong. Bringing together works by 41 artists in a variety of media, it traces a lineage that connects postwar figurative expressionism to the 1960s and 70s investigations of politics, gender and ethnicity in art. The featured artists include John Altoon, Wallace Berman, William Brice, Hans Burckhardt, Chris Burden, Cameron, Judy Chicago, Connor Everts, Llyn Foulkes, Charles Garabedian, David Hammonds, Robert Heinecken, John Paul Jones, Kim Jones, Ed and Nancy Kienholz, Rico Lebrun, Paul McCarthy, Arnold Mesches, Betye Saar, Ben Sakoguchi, Barbara Smith, James Strombotne, Jan Stussy, Edward Teske, Joyce Treiman, Howard Warshaw, June Wayne, Charles White and Jack Zajac. Modern Worlds: Austrian and German Art, 1890-1940
by: Price, Renee / Lauder, Ronald S./Peters, Olaf/ Staggs, Janis

Hardcover. Munch/London/NY, Prestel, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. 656 pages. Published on the twentieth anniversary of the founding of Neue Galerie New York, this stunning volume celebrates the varied achievements of modern art history in the German-speaking world by examining historical developments in Austria and Germany from 1890 to 1940. Illustrated throughout with exquisite reproductions of the museum's holdings, this book considers the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche and his writings on the fine arts and examines the founding of the Secessionist artists' organizations in Germany and Austria. Insightful essays trace the emergence of Expressionism and abstraction, as well as the development of such movements as Dada and New Objectivity. Evolutions in architecture and design are appraised through the legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the establishment of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony and the Wiener Werkstatte. The book also examines the role of the German Werkbund and the founding of the Bauhaus school. Finally, the book briefly addresses the horrific impact of the National Socialists' degenerate art campaign, which resulted in incalculable damage and led to the exile and death of artists and designers of the era. From well-known artists such as Otto Dix, Josef Hoffmann, Vasily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, and Egon Schiele, to lesser recognized but equally important figures, including Albert Birkle, Alfred Kubin, Felix Nussbaum, and Dagobert Peche, this book offers an authoritative and kaleidoscopic look at a crucial moment in history and a portrait of radical thought that changed forever the way we experience art in our lives. Walter Crane as a Book Illustrator
by: Crane, Walter

Softcover. New York, St. Martins Press , 1st US, 1975, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 122 pages. Softcover. Small marking to front cover. Otherwise clean copy with minor edgewear. 107 illustrations, including 16 in color. Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but is possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. Rodney Engen, American-born painter and lecturer, discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design.

The Dakota: A History of the World's Best-Known Apartment Buildingby: Andrew Alpern/Christopher Gray/Kenneth Grant (Photos)

The Dakota: A History of the World's Best-Known Apartment Building
by: Andrew Alpern/Christopher Gray/Kenneth Grant (Photos)

Hardcover. NY, Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 224 pages. The Dakota is arguably the best-known residential address in the world, home to dozens of New York City's most famous artists, performers, and successful executives. The rare sale of an apartment there, usually at jaw-dropping prices, is newsworthy, as is the financial and architectural health of the building itself, a landmark in every sense of the word. The first true luxury apartment house built in New York City, more than 130 years ago, the Dakota is still the gold standard against which all other apartment buildings are weighed. Historian Andrew Alpern tells the fascinating story of how the Dakota came to be, how Singer sewing magnate Edward Clark dared to build an apartment building luxurious enough to coax the city's wealthy from their mansions downtown for ultra-modern living on what was then the swamplands of the Upper West Side. Redrawn plans of the entire building, published here for the first time, show how Clark created apartments glamorous enough that they made living under a shared roof as acceptable in Manhattan as it already was in Europe's grand capitals, forever revolutionizing apartment life in New York City.

Michael Rakowitz
by: Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev

Hardcover. Milan, Silvana Editoriale, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz's (b. 1973, USA) first major European survey presents a sequence of installations drawing on architecture, cultural artifacts and cuisine to tell stories of social ritual, conflict and loss. It encompasses work considering the citizen visionaries of post Soviet Hungary, Middle Eastern Beatles fans and the stonecarvers of Afghanistan, with Rakowitz's casts of players and objects revealing the legacy of colonization, modernism and globalism. The artist's life-size replica of the gigantic lamassu, one of two monumental winged bulls that once guarded the gates of Nineveh in Iraq, currently features on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth. This recreation of an ancient mythological creature is made from everyday date syrup cans and is part of an epic endeavour to recreate all 7,000 objects looted from the Iraq Museum in 2003, as well as those destroyed more recently at archaeological sites like Nimrud, also presented here. Matisse's Sculpture: The Pinup and the Primitiveby: McBreen, Ellen

Matisse's Sculpture: The Pinup and the Primitive
by: McBreen, Ellen

Hardcover. New Haven, CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. 228 pages. Long perceived as a side pursuit to his celebrated painting career, Henri Matisse's sculpture receives an overdue critical examination in this book. Beginning in 1906, soon after the artist acquired his first African sculpture, Matisse found inspiration in erotic and ethnographic photography, which had become inexpensively mass-produced thanks to advances in halftone technology. Working with these two radically different depictions of the body--one hand carved, the other mechanically made--was a foundational method for Matisse and crucial to the development of his pre-World War I abstraction. Far from a simple narrative of the artist "discovering" Africa, the highly original readings of Matisse's Sculpture plot new coordinates of study for early 20th-century primitivism. It examines the larger constructs of thought at the time, with a penetrating analysis of anthropology, popular erotica, and the visual culture of French colonialism. In addition, the book repositions Matisse's sculptural practice, particularly in regard to its investigations of race and sexuality, as a cornerstone of his prolific career.

Thomas Kinkade: The Artist in the Mall
by: Boylan, Alexis L. [Editor]

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 284 pages, color and b&w illustrations.Often featuring lighthouses, bridges, or quaint country homes, Thomas Kinkade's soft-focus landscapes have permeated American visual culture during the past twenty years, appearing on everything from Bibles to bedsheets to credit cards. Kinkade sells his work through his shopping-mall galleries, QVC, the Internet, and Christian stores. He is quite possibly the most collected artist in the United States. While many art-world and academic critics have dismissed him as a passing fad or marketing phenomenon, the contributors to this collection do not. Instead, they explore his work and its impact on contemporary art as part of the broader history of American visual culture. They consider Kinkade's imagery and career in relation to nineteenth-century Currier and Ives prints and Andres Serrano's Piss Christ, the collectibles market and the fine-art market, the Thomas Kinkade Museum and Cultural Center, and "The Village at Hiddenbrooke," a California housing development inspired by Kinkade's paintings. The conceptual artist Jeffrey Vallance, the curator of the first major museum exhibition of Kinkade's art and collectibles, recounts his experiences organizing that show. All of the contributors draw on art history, visual culture, and cultural studies as they seek to understand Kinkade's significance for both art and audiences. Along the way, they delve into questions about beauty, class, kitsch, religion, and taste in contemporary art. Clean copy.

Raphael: The Stanza Della Segnatura, Rome
by: Beck, James

Hardcover. NY, George Braziller , 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 95 pages. Oblong format. 33 color plates of the artist's fresco in the Vatican. Other b&w illustrations. Recognizing the precocious talent of Raphael, then age twenty-six, Pope Julius II commissioned the artist in 1509 to paint four monumental murals and numerous smaller scenes that gave visual form to the enlightened world of the Renaissance. Guided by the leading scholars of his day, Raphael chose themes that glorified the four branches of learning required for a general education, particularly that of a pope: Theology, Poetry, Jurisprudence, and Philosophy. The painting of the latter, perhaps best known today as "The School of Athens," shows Plato and Aristotle striding through a vast, open hallway and flanked by scientists and philosophers of the ancient world; rediscovered in the Renaissance, they hold a convention where they discuss issues that will inspire a new age. Short inscription on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

ART OF ROBERT CREMEAN, THE : Selected Works, 1952-2005 (SIGNED COPY)by: Shields, Scott A.; ROBERT CREMEAN

ART OF ROBERT CREMEAN, THE : Selected Works, 1952-2005 (SIGNED COPY)
by: Shields, Scott A.; ROBERT CREMEAN

Softcover. Sacramento CA, Crocker Art Museum, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 47 pages, illustrated throughout in color. SIGNED BY ARTIST on front end paper. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrappers. Robert Cremean (1932 - Present) is a sculptor (and occasional painter) born in Ohio, now based in Tomales Bay, California. Cremean does superlative figurative work. However, he has largely isolated himself from the American art mainstream to the extent that any showing is a considerable rarity. He's developed, via a benefactor, an "arrangement" with the Fresno Art Museum whereby it displays most of his new work. This book is from a show at the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, in 2005. Now 88, Cremean was early--and unsurprisingly-- influenced by medieval art, particularly the illuminated Chaucer manuscript at the Huntington Library. "I was amazed at the way the words and pictures met one another on the page." Most of his painted words are transcribed from his own notebooks.

Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture, 1878-1976by: Philippe Garner

Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture, 1878-1976
by: Philippe Garner

Hardcover. Taschen, reprint, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. Though her work has often been overshadowed by that of her peers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, Irish designer, lacquer-artist, and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now widely recognized as a designer of great talent and individuality. She first excelled in the exacting craft of lacquer, creating screens, panels, furniture, and objects of technical virtuosity and poetic strength. Eileen Gray then developed an interest in architecture, designing two houses, "E-1027" (completed 1929) and "Tempe a Pailla" (completed 1934) in the south of France, which are seminal examples of the spirit of the Modern movement. This book analyses and illustrates the full range of her furniture, interiors, and completed architectural projects. Reprint of the edition of 1993.
