Caspar David Friedrichby: Hofmann, Werner

Caspar David Friedrich
by: Hofmann, Werner

Hardcover. New York, Thames and Hudson, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 299 pages, 193 illustrations, 150 in color. Clean copy in a bright dust jacket with a mild crease to the dust jacket. Werner Hofmann vividly demonstrates Caspar David Friedrich's extraordinary ability to reproduce the natural world in faithful detail, while at the same time imbuing it with spiritual and religious significance. Caught between the near and the distant, the finite and the infinite, his human figures find a space in which to engage in the thoughtful contemplation of nature and the divine. Carefully placing the artist in a wider context, Hofmann examines contemporary judgments and influences on Friedrich's work. The beautiful illustrations include many of Friedrich's drawings and watercolors as well as over ninety of his works in oils.

The Rohan Master:A Book of Hoursby: Marcel Thomas [Editor]; Millard Meiss [Introduction];

The Rohan Master:A Book of Hours
by: Marcel Thomas [Editor]; Millard Meiss [Introduction];

Hardcover. NY, George Braziller, 1st, 1973, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, red cloth covers stamped in gilt, in a black cardboard slipcase. Color illustrations throughout. This powerful and breathtakingly beautiful Book of Hours was designed in the fifteenth century by one of the greatest masters of expressionism in France at the time, and executed by him (together with members of his workshop) for a royal patron. A relatively unknown masterpiece, it emerged from artistic obscurity in 1904 to widespread acclaim and critical appreciation. As Millard Meiss points out in his Introduction: "The Rohan Master cared less about what people do than what they feel. . . .Whereas his great predecessors, the Boucicaut Master and the Limbourgs, excelled in the description of novel aspects of the natural world, he explored the realm of human feeling." Introduction by Liz Smith. Related articles laid-in. Light shelf wear to dust jacket, otherwise clean, tight copy. With former New York Times fashion editor Morris, fashion designer Scaasi looks back over his glittering career. Born Arnold Isaacs, the son of a Montreal fur merchant, he first made his mark in 1955 when, at the age of 20, he revolutionized the American fashion industry with luxurious imported fabrics and dramatic designs featuring almond-shaped coats and split-level jackets. Changing his name to Scaasi (Isaacs spelled backwards), he quickly rose to fame, first with ready-to-wear creations and later with extravagant couture for women willing to spend $6000 -$20,000 for a dress-stars such as Joan Crawford, Barbra Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor; socialites Charlotte Ford, Blaine Trump and Brooke Astor. First ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Barbara Bush have been dressed by him. Replete with 100 color photographs of models and celebrities wearing the designer's exuberant clothes, this lavish book, which includes brief descriptions of Scaasi's working methods and accounts of his friendships with his affluent clients, provides a tantalizing glimpse of the world of high fashion.

Great Comic Cats
by: Malcolm Whyte

Softcover. San Francisco, Pomegranate, Revised Ed., 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 168 pages. Many cans of tuna have been opened and emptied since the collection's first mostly black-and-white edition, in 1981; the revised edition adds more color art as well as coverage of classics including The Cat in the Hat, Bill the Cat, and pets penned by B. Kliban and Edward Gorey. The volume covers cartoon depictions of the cat dating back to 1100 B.C., though the bulk of the images date to the 20th century. Brief essays about printing, literature, contemporary society, and other historical facts are interspersed with the goods selections from the comics themselves. Editor Whyte is a publisher who founded the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco.
