Gahan Wilson 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons (3 Volumes)by: Wilson, Hugh Hefner(Ed.), Gahan

Gahan Wilson 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons (3 Volumes)
by: Wilson, Hugh Hefner(Ed.), Gahan

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Three hardcover volumes in a pictorial slipcase, 1056 pages. Few cartoonists ever had as lavish a tribute as a three-volume-slipcased collection, but few are as deserving as Wilson. Collecting 50 years worth of his monthly single page gag cartoons from Playboy, it's a definitive overview of a remarkable talent and viewpoint. Considering the timeframe, Wilson's fabled black humor and art style remain remarkably consistent--as time passes, the drawing renders into slightly blobbier shapes that retain all of their wit just the same--but the source and degree of the humor is a constant. Although best known for his slightly lugubrious subjects--monsters, witches, corpses, vampires and skeletons are frequent visitors to these pages--Wilson also targets consumerism, materialism, and other basic human foibles. As publisher Gary Groth writes in a biography in the third volume, He has constructed a world that is eerily family, unsettlingly recognizable and lethally consistent. Beautifully designed and printed, the books contain cut-out pages, and the slipcase itself becomes a window for a trapped photo of Wilson. Text extras include Wilson's prose short stories and an appreciation by Neil Gaiman.

Fables in Frames: La Fontaine and Visual Culture in Nineteenth-Century Franceby: Powell, Kirsten H.

Fables in Frames: La Fontaine and Visual Culture in Nineteenth-Century France
by: Powell, Kirsten H.

Hardcover. New York, Peter Lang Inc., International Academic Publishers , 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 180 pages, b&w illustrations. A very clean, tight copy. Fables in Frames argues that the increased interest in the fables of La Fontaine during the nineteenth century resulted largely from the activities of artists, who offered the seventeenth-century fables new contexts for a post-Revolution age. First in caricature and book illustration and later in Salon painting, artists transformed the fables to comment on contemporary issues. The goal of this study is to tackle the general issue of why La Fontaine's fables appeared in art at all during the nineteenth century and to explore the specific questions of how certain artists made those texts culturally normative.

Mariko Mori : Oneness by: Mori, Mariko

Mariko Mori : Oneness
by: Mori, Mariko

Hardcover. Ostfildern, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in a white cardboard slipcase, 352 pages. One of the best-known Japanese artists of the international scene, Mariko Mori, born in 1967 in Tokyo, envisions fantastical worlds and beings in spectacular photographs and videos--frequently casting herself amid these scenarios as a Bjork-esque avatar in biomorphic and technological symbiosis. Mori studied fashion design in Tokyo, worked briefly as a model and later studied fine art in England, and this early education is visible in her elaborately produced photographs, videos and sculpture that are as reminiscent of Hollywood as they are of contemporary art. Her recent work involves exotic landscapes, computer-generated images and choreographed performances for which the artist designs her own costumes and plays the central characters. This extraordinary and substantial publication offers a retrospective of Mori's entire oeuvre, and is the first to present the complete Beginning of the End: Past, Present, Future, a photographic cycle produced over a period of 11 years, in which Mori presents herself as a time traveler in a plexiglass capsule at significant symbolic locations, from Giza to New York to Shanghai.

Hardcover. Boston, David Godine, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 128 pages. Color illustrations. Edward Ardizzone, one of England's most beloved artists and illustrators, was also an artist who could never resist the temptation of filling his letters to family and friends with enchanting vignettes and sketches. John La Farge's Second Paradise: Voyages in the South Seas, 1890-1891 (Yale Art Gallery)
by: Hodermarsky, Elisabeth

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2010-11-09, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, 224 pages, profuse color and b&w illustrations and plates. The essays in John La Farge's Second Paradise explore the artist's reemergence as a plain air landscape painter, his use of the sketchbook, and his late decorative work, which was reinvigorated by the experience of light and color he discovered in the South Seas. Further discussions examine the prevailing notions of tropical paradise perpetuated since Captain Cook's "discovery" of Polynesia in the late 18th century, and offer the first extended comparison of the careers and art of La Farge and Paul Gauguin, who arrived in Tahiti only days after La Farge left in 1891. Featuring many previously unpublished works, this beautiful book is a major contribution to the study of La Farge's life and art. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap.

Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Designby: Jennifer Bass , Pat Kirkham , et al.

Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design
by: Jennifer Bass , Pat Kirkham , et al.

Hardcover. London, Laurence King, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 428 pages. This is the first book to be published on one of the greatest American designers of the 20th Century, who was as famous for his work in film as for his corporate identity and graphic work. With more than 1,400 illustrations, many of them never published before and written by the leading design historian Pat Kirkham, this is the definitive study that design and film enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating. Saul Bass (1920-1996) created some of the most compelling images of American post-war visual culture. Having extended the remit of graphic design to include film titles, he went on to transform the genre. His best known works include a series of unforgettable posters and title sequences for films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Otto Preminger's The Man With The Golden Arm and Anatomy of a Murder. He also created some of the most famous logos and corporate identity campaigns of the century, including those for major companies such as AT&T, Quaker Oats, United Airlines and Minolta. His wife and collaborator, Elaine, joined the Bass office in the late 1950s. Together they created an impressive series of award-winning short films, including the Oscar-winning Why Man Creates, as well as an equally impressive series of film titles, ranging from Stanley Kubrick s Spartacus in the early 1960s to Martin Scorsese s Cape Fear and Casino in the 1990s. Designed by Jennifer Bass, Saul Bass's daughter and written by distinguished design historian Pat Kirkham who knew Saul Bass personally, this book is full of images from the Bass archive, providing an in depth account of one of the leading graphic artists of the 20th century.

Blown Covers: New Yorker Covers You Were Never Meant to Seeby: Mouly, Francoise

Blown Covers: New Yorker Covers You Were Never Meant to See
by: Mouly, Francoise

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 128 pages. Francoise Mouly takes us behind the scenes at the New Yorker and reveals how the magazine creates its signature covers commenting on the most urgent political and cultural events of the day. She shows the shocking and hilarious sketches that didn't make the cut and explains how these are essential stages in the evolution of a cover that stands the test of time but retains its edge. Her book captures contemporary history--from the farce of Monica Lewinsky to the adventures of Michelle and Barack to nuclear meltdown in Japan--in images that are as acute as they are outrageous. More than that, it shows how the magazine that exemplifies journalistic excellence in America also dares to cultivate a sense of humor when grappling with complex moral and political issues.

Danger Is My Businessby: Lee Server

Danger Is My Business
by: Lee Server

Softcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 144 pages. An illustrated history of the fabulous pulp magazines from 1896 to 1953. After tracing the birth of the pulps back to the 1882 launching of Golden Argosy magazine, printed on pulpwood pages, Server organizes his unwieldy subject into categories of pulps: adventure, romance and sex, horror and fantasy, private eye, weird menace, science fiction. Each receives a lively capsule history that covers trends, reader (and sometimes, as in the case of the ``Spicys,'' government) response, and writers' bios--which, though sketchy (Hammett's Hollywood experience gets one sentence), resurrect a number of relatively obscure but seminal and fascinating figures, like Conan- creator Robert E. Howard, who shot himself dead at age 30 on the day his mother died, and Frederick Faust (a.k.a. Max Brand), who sometimes wrote around the clock, piling up two or three million words a year. Server attributes the pulps' demise to, among other factors, the advent of TV, paperbacks, and comic books, and he winds up with a note on pulp-collecting. For all of the author's savvy, though, it's above all the eye- popping illustrations (100 color, 57 b&w) that will have readers beaming. Magazine covers (some lurid, some of eerie beauty), sample pages of text and ads (``Raise Giant Frogs'')--the pulps come alive once again here, in all their eccentric glory.

R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collectionby: Crumb, R.

R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection
by: Crumb, R.

Hardcover. New York, W. W. Norton & Company, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hard cover in slipcase. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. A landmark work that pays splendid homage to a forgotten era of seminal American music. Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her album Cheap Thrills. It was an invitation the budding artist couldn't resist, especially since he had been fascinated with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country, and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a teen. This early collaboration proved so successful that Crumb went on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb's artistic interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s. Including such classics as Truckin' My Blues Away, Harmonica Blues, and Please Warm My Weiner, Crumb's opus also features more recent covers done for CDs. R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection is a must-have for any lover of graphics and old-time music. 450 four-color illustrations

Lust For The Devil: The Erotic-Satanic Art Of Felicien Ropsby: Joris-Karl Huysmans and Felicien Rops

Lust For The Devil: The Erotic-Satanic Art Of Felicien Rops
by: Joris-Karl Huysmans and Felicien Rops

Softcover. Wet Angel Books, reprint, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 96 pages. The first true flowering of Satanism in erotic art came with the Belgian artist Felicien Rops (1833-1898). Rops, who had met Charles Baudelaire in Paris in 1864 and subsequently become a devoted disciple, thereafter commingled elements of death, prostitution and the Satanic in his work, particularly in his 5-picture series Les Sataniques of 1882. Pictures in this series such as The Sacrifice and Calvary are clear and explicit representations of Black Mass and Satanism which still retain their original power to shock and disturb. These images, as well as the others in Les Sataniques, can be found in Lust For The Devil, which collects around 80 of Rops' most outlandish and confrontational works, including a section of 30 colour plates.

Betsy and Meby: Cole, Jack

Betsy and Me
by: Cole, Jack

Softcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st thus, 2007-12-05, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 90 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. Having mastered comic books and gag cartoons, in 1958 Jack Cole set his sights on the cartoonist's pot of gold--a syndicated newspaper strip. He hit the bull's-eye with Betsy and Me, a breezy domestic farce focusing on a middle-class urban couple and their smart-aleck genius son. Betsy and Me was an instant success and newpapers were lining up to buy it. Then, with only two-and-a-half month's worth of strips completed, Cole purchased a .22 caliber pistol and ended his life. For Betsy and Me, featuring city dweller Chet Tibbit's day-to-day stuggles and achievements, Cole stripped his style down to its bare essentials, creating a strip that sparkles with economy, wit, and charm. What gave the strip its edge, however, was Cole's innovative storytelling. As R.C. Harvey writes in his introduction, "Cole's storytelling manner was unique: the comedy arose from the pictures' contradicting the narrative prose. Cole's fatuous protagonist and narrator would say one thing in the captions accompanying the drawings, but the pictures of his actions showed the opposite, revealing [him] to be a trifle pretentious and wholly delusional." Harvey's intro also serves as a biographical sketch and sheds light on the circumstances surrounding Cole's suicide.
