Collects the earliest adventures of Batman and Robin as they battle a variety of villains including the Monk and the Joker. The early adventures of Batman including his very first appearance in Detective Comics and his first solo comic are included in Volume 1, the first of a series that prints every Batman story in order. While the dialogue and artwork and plots are very basic and crude which is normal for early comics, it does show how Batman started with the basic familiar origin story still there. The action is set in New York, not Gotham and the art is by Bob Kane, the original creator. The first 7 volumes in the series are offered here.

Roy Crane created the first American adventure strip: Wash Tubbs. The character Captain Easy spun off into his own Sunday page in 1933, and Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune: The Complete Sunday Newspaper Strips Vol. 1 collects these full-color strips from that point until 1935. In Volume One, Captain Easy visits a lost city, battles pirates, dons a diving suit in search of treasure; everywhere he goes, he finds beautiful women. Captain Easy not only influenced roles for the likes of Hollywood actors such as Cary Grant or Errol Flynn, he influenced virtually every comics hero who followed him - Gil Kane once said "Superman was Captain Easy; Batman was Captain Easy." Crane combined adventure and humor in a Bigfoot cartooning style: according to comic-strip historian Richard Marschall, Crane "develop[ed] expressive techniques and a whole dictionary of conventions and signs for future comic strip artists. Volume One also features some of the best and rarest Roy Crane art, as well as illustrations from his sketchbooks. It will also contain biographical and critical introductions to Crane and his work.

Volume I of the set, "Documentation: Reviews" is 485 pages in length and is divided into eight sections, one for each of the original impressionists. Volume II of the set, "Documentation: Exhibited Works" is 300 pages in length and consists of black and white photographic illustrations of the works that were presented at the eight exhibitions, along with annotations and references to the original reviews, as well as other sources of documentation.

A commercial artist who started out sketching in the 1930s for pulp magazines, Lovell advanced to the glossier "slicks" in the 1950s and has since specialized in Old West, Plains Indian, and Civil War themes. He here presents from that long career his best canvases, among them his famed depictions of Lee's surrender and the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts' assault (in film, the climax of Glory). His spark of inspiration is usually to visualize an incident he has read of in the journals of the first white explorers and trappers, such as those of Lewis and Clark. Whether it's Clark firing his rifle or Indians encountering a cannon lost by Fremont, Native Americans are generally presented as wary but curious about the newcomers; Lovell puts the warfare outside of the frame. Themes aside, he works expertly with natural color, and though not a modern George Caitlin, his attention to the detail of Indian dress, carriage, and equipage is quite affecting, fully reflective of his respect for the cultures of Apache, Sioux, etc. A rich tribute to a captivating artist who evokes the West's vast landscape and its individual braves and traders in moods of exuberance and perseverance.

Abbey had the rarefied appeal to everyone from the average reader to the most prestigious artists of the day. The inclusion of Abbey's illustrations in these periodicals helped to expand the reach of the poetry, stories and essays that they accompanied to a massive audience. This book focuses on Abbey's line art for the magazines and books published by Harper & Brothers, beginning with his earliest works as a new professional in the field. The collection contains over 350 drawings. These delineated the poetry of Robert Herrick and enhanced such books as The Deserted Village, Old Songs, She Stoops to Conquer and The Quiet Life. Drawings created for numerous short stories and poetry are displayed here as well. Also collected are Abbey's exquisite series of drawings done over the course of twenty years for The Comedies of William Shakespeare, followed by The Shakespeare Tragedies. His painstaking devotion to research while securing the appropriate costumes, props and models for his drawings was legendary. The results are some of the most revered illustrations ever created, which continue to astound aficionados and inspire artists generations after Abbey's last drawing was made.
