Fearless Fosdick: The Hole Storyby: Capp, Al

Fearless Fosdick: The Hole Story
by: Capp, Al

Softcover. Kitchen Sink Press, 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages. "Fearless Fosdick", a ruthless parody of Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy", was one of Al Capp's many brilliant creations within his comic strip masterpiece "Li'l Abner". It was also one of the funniest things ever to appear in the funny pages. Fosdick, a skinny, hatchet-jawed detective who is frequently riddled with enormous bullet holes (hence the title of this book), is the ideal of Abner Yokum and every red-blooded American boy, and stars in their favorite comic strip, within the "Abner" strip itself. Fosdick endures a world of corruption and his seventeen-year engagement to the beastly Prudence Pimpleton in order to slaughter members of the criminal underword for twenty-two-fifty a week. This handsome paperback from Capp's faithful re-publisher Denis Kitchen picks up where an earlier volume left off, collecting a handful of Fosdick stories (and one about Fosdick's fictional creator, Lester Gooch) from the late fifties and early sixties, as well as a few of Fosdick's "Wildroot Cream Oil" ads from the period. Dave Shreiner's commentary is, as always, insightful and intelligent.

Ferruccio Vitale: Landscape Architect of the Country Place Era
by: Schnadelbach, R. Terry

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 326 pages, illustrated with b&w photographs, several color plates and architectural drawings by Vitale. Foreword by Horace Havemeyer III. Ferruccio Vitale is America's forgotten landscape architect. Though his works like Skylands and Longwood Gardens are well known, his name has been eclipsed by his contemporary, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Yet Vitale's influence on the modern direction of landscape design and his promotion of it as a profession is arguably more significant than Olmsted's. His unique designs and philosophy, which challenged the then-dominant pictorial mode of landscape architecture, influenced generations of followers, and is still felt today. Vitale (1875-1933) developed his rationale designs, based on the principles of composition from the fine arts and architecture, in both civic commissions and, most notably, at the country estates of captains of industry and finance. He introduced an idealized and abstracted type of formal design that created beautiful spaces, structured large sites, and reflected informal and relaxed plant compositions. Ferruccio Vitale tours over 40 of his masterworks, photographed by some of the best landscape photographers of the time, including Samuel Gottscho. It recounts the compelling story of a life in the early twentieth century, influenced by immigrant dreams, social clubs, and professional connections, and its culmination in some of the greatest landscapes of the 20th century.

Feynman's Thesis: A New Approach to Quantum Theory by: Brown, Laurie M (Editor)

Feynman's Thesis: A New Approach to Quantum Theory
by: Brown, Laurie M (Editor)

Softcover. London, World Scientific Publishing, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 121 pages. Richard Feynman?s never previously published doctoral thesis formed the heart of much of his brilliant and profound work in theoretical physics. Entitled "The Principle of Least Action in Quantum Mechanics," its original motive was to quantize the classical action-at-a-distance electrodynamics. Because that theory adopted an overall space?time viewpoint, the classical Hamiltonian approach used in the conventional formulations of quantum theory could not be used, so Feynman turned to the Lagrangian function and the principle of least action as his points of departure. The result was the path integral approach, which satisfied ? and transcended ? its original motivation, and has enjoyed great success in renormalized quantum field theory, including the derivation of the ubiquitous Feynman diagrams for elementary particles. Path integrals have many other applications, including atomic, molecular, and nuclear scattering, statistical mechanics, quantum liquids and solids, Brownian motion, and noise theory. It also sheds new light on fundamental issues like the interpretation of quantum theory because of its new overall space?time viewpoint. Clean copy.

Black and white pictures throughout. Throughout her career, Eve Arnold alternated between serious documentary photography and working behind the scenes on numerous films. At a time when Hollywood studios controlled every aspect of their actors' image, Arnold's candid photographs showed them at their most intimate and their most compelling: Marilyn Monroe sharing a private moment with Arthur Miller, Marlene Dietrich, uncharacteristically girlish in the recording studio, Michael Caine and Candice Bergen doing an impromptu tango number and an exhausted Richard Attenborough stealing a nap in between shooting. Eve Arnold: Film Journal is a collection of these famous film stills along with the notes and impressions made by Arnold during the shoot. As her camera revealed the unseen sides of Hollywood legends, Arnold also became privy to their private lives. In her Film Journal, she writes memorably about the tensions and dramas on the film sets, of Marilyn Monroe combing her pubic hair during an interview, Simone Signoret discussing her husband Yves Montand's infidelities, Joan Crawford sneaking in vodka in a Pepsi cooler, and Marlene Dietrich recounting her night with John F. Kennedy. With 80 previously unpublished photographs, including many old favorites, Eve Arnold: Film Journal is a classic from one of the great photographers of our time.

Final Cutby: Burns, Charles

Final Cut
by: Burns, Charles

Hardcover. NY, Pantheon, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with red cloth spine. The beloved and award-winning author's haunting and visually arresting story of an artist's obsessions, and the value and cost of pushing the boundaries of creativity. As a child, Brian and his friend Jimmy would make sci-fi films in their yards, convincing their friends to star as victims of grisly murders, smearing lipstick on the "bodies" to simulate blood. Now a talented artist and aspiring filmmaker, Brian, along with Jimmy, Jimmy's friend Tina, and Laurie--his reluctant muse--sets off to a remote cabin in the woods with an old 8 millimeter camera to make a true sci-fi horror movie, an homage to Brian's favorite movie: Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But as Brian's affections for Laurie go seemingly unreciprocated, Brian writes and draws himself into a fantasy where she is the girl of his dreams, his damsel in distress, and his savior wrapped into one. Rife with references to classic sci-fi and horror movies and filled with panels of stunning depictions of nature, film and the surreal, Burns blurs the line between Brian's dreams and reality, imagination and perception. A master of the form at his finest, Final Cut is an astonishing look at what it means to truly express oneself through art. Clean, bright copy.

Final Victory: FDR's Extraordinary World War II Presidential Campaignby: Stanley Weintraub

Final Victory: FDR's Extraordinary World War II Presidential Campaign
by: Stanley Weintraub

Hardcover. NY, Da Capo Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. When the wartime 1944 presidential election campaign geared up late that spring, Franklin D. Roosevelt had already occupied the White House years longer than any other president. Sensing likely weakness, the Republicans mounted an energetic and expensive campaign, hitting hard at FDR's liberal domestic policies and the war's ongoing cost. Despite gravely deteriorating health, FDR and his feisty running mate, the unexpected Harry Truman, campaigned vigorously against young governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York and old-line Ohio governor John Bricker. Roosevelt's charm and wit, as well as the military successes in Europe and the Pacific, contributed to his sweeping electoral victory. But the hard-fought campaign would soon take its toll on America's only four-term president. Preeminent historian and biographer Stanley Weintraub recaptures FDR's striking "last campaign" and the year's momentous events, from the rainy city streets where Roosevelt, his legs paralyzed by polio since 1922, rode in an open car, to the battlefronts where the commander-in-chief's forces were closing in on Hitler and Hirohito.
