Tasha Tudor: The Direction of Her Dreamsby: Hare, William John and Priscilla

Tasha Tudor: The Direction of Her Dreams
by: Hare, William John and Priscilla

Hardcover. Oak Knoll Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 559 pages. First comprehensive bio-bibliography of one of the most loved children's book authors and illustrators in America and around the world. Not only does this book describe Tudor's sixty-year career, but also readers will enjoy the poignant stories about Tudor written by her two daughters, Bethany and Efner, and her editors, Patricia Gauch and Dorothy Haas. The daughter of naval architect, W. Starling Burgess, and portrait painter, Rosamond Tudor, Tasha Tudor, as a child, was greatly influenced by her father's engineering background and her mother's artistic life. She became particularly fascinated by life in the 1830's, which inspires her art, writing, and her own life. From 1938 onward, Tudor's children's books captivated a wide audience. Her fans are still intrigued by her magical stories and her romantic illustration of New England's countryside, drawn from her own experiences of family life. Her work is published in more than 90 books, which have been reprinted and republished many times. Through her eighties, Tudor remained active in publishing, meeting her fans, and autographing her books. In loving tribute, this work is illustrated with many drawings by Tudor's daughter, Bethany, as well as rare early photos of Tudor as a young woman, by Nell Dorr, and 16 pages of color photos of Tudor's book covers. The bibliography includes every known book illustrated and/or written by Tudor, including those published in the first half of 1998.

Tastemaker: Elizabeth Gordon, House Beautiful, and the Postwar American Homeby: Monica Penick

Tastemaker: Elizabeth Gordon, House Beautiful, and the Postwar American Home
by: Monica Penick

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 260 pages, in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. A riveting and superbly illustrated account of the enigmatic House Beautiful editor's profound influence on mid-century American taste From 1941 to 1964, House Beautiful magazine's crusading editor-in-chief Elizabeth Gordon introduced and promoted her vision of "good design" and "better living" to an extensive middle-class American readership. Her innovative magazine-sponsored initiatives, including House Beautiful's Pace Setter House Program and the Climate Control Project, popularized a "livable" and decidedly American version of postwar modern architecture. Gordon's devotion to what she called the American Style attracted the attention of Frank Lloyd Wright, who became her ally and collaborator. Gordon's editorial programs reshaped ideas about American living and, by extension, what consumers bought, what designers made, and what manufacturers brought to market. This incisive assessment of Gordon's influence as an editor, critic, and arbiter of domestic taste reflects more broadly on the cultures of consumption and identity in postwar America. Nearly 200 images are featured, including work by Ezra Stoller, Maynard Parker, and Julius Shulman. This important book champions an often-neglected source--the consumer magazine--as a key tool for deepening our understanding of mid-century architecture and design.

Telling Stories: Philip Guston's Later Works
by: Kaufmann, David

Softcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 118 pages, illustrations in color. Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. In Telling Stories, David Kaufmann focuses on Philip Guston's controversial figurative paintings of the late 1960s and 1970s. He looks at the early critical reception of these works to see what the artist was actually doing and, at another level, to investigate the odd alchemy of artists and their audiences. Grounding his historical approach in careful readings of the paintings, Kaufmann pays close attention to Guston's intense and complicated relationship to Judaism. At the same time, by situating Guston in the context of the fashions of the New York art world, Kaufmann provides unique insight into the workings of that world at the moment when the strictures of artistic modernism began to fade.

Telling Times: Writing and Living, 1954-2008by: Gordimer, Nadine

Telling Times: Writing and Living, 1954-2008
by: Gordimer, Nadine

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 752 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket edges. A tight copy. Never before has Gordimer, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991, published such a comprehensive collection of her nonfiction. Telling Times represents the full span of her works in that field-from the twilight of white rule in South Africa to the fight to overthrow the apartheid regime, and most recently, her role over the past seven years in confronting the contemporary phenomena of violence and the dangers of HIV. The range of this book is staggering, and the work in totality celebrates the lively perseverance of the life-loving individual in the face of political tumult, then the onslaught of a globalized world. The abiding passionate spirit that informs "A South African Childhood," a youthful autobiographical piece published in The New Yorker in 1954, can be found in each of the book's ninety-one pieces that span a period of fifty-five years.

Ten-Cent Plague, The: The Great Comic Book Scare and How It Changed America
by: Hajdu, David

Hardcover. New York, Farrar Straus and Giroux, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 434 pages, b&w illustrations. Like new condition. When we picture the 1950s, we hear the sound of early rock and roll. The Ten-Cent Plague shows how -- years before music -- comics brought on a clash between children and their parents, between prewar and postwar standards. Created by outsiders from the tenements, garish, shameless, and often shocking, comics spoke to young people and provided the guardians of mainstream culture with a big target. Parents, teachers, and complicit kids burned comics in public bonfires. Cities passed laws to outlaw comics. Congress took action with televised hearings that nearly destroyed the careers of hundreds of artists and writers.

Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Fleshby: John Lahr

Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh
by: John Lahr

Hardcover. NY, W. W. Norton, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 765 pages, b&w illustrations. John Lahr has produced a theater biography like no other. Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh gives intimate access to the mind of one of the most brilliant dramatists of his century, whose plays reshaped the American theater and the nation's sense of itself. This astute, deeply researched biography sheds a light on Tennessee Williams's warring family, his guilt, his creative triumphs and failures, his sexuality and numerous affairs, his misreported death, even the shenanigans surrounding his estate. With vivid cameos of the formative influences in Williams's life-his fierce, belittling father Cornelius; his puritanical, domineering mother Edwina; his demented sister Rose, who was lobotomized at the age of thirty-three; his beloved grandfather, the Reverend Walter Dakin-Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh is as much a biography of the man who created A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof as it is a trenchant exploration of Williams's plays and the tortured process of bringing them to stage and screen. The portrait of Williams himself is unforgettable: a virgin until he was twenty-six, he had serial homosexual affairs thereafter as well as long-time, bruising relationships with Pancho Gonzalez and Frank Merlo. With compassion and verve, Lahr explores how Williams's relationships informed his work and how the resulting success brought turmoil to his personal life. Lahr captures not just Williams's tempestuous public persona but also his backstage life, where his agent Audrey Wood and the director Elia Kazan play major roles, and Marlon Brando, Anna Magnani, Bette Davis, Maureen Stapleton, Diana Barrymore, and Tallulah Bankhead have scintillating walk-on parts. This is a biography of the highest order: a book about the major American playwright of his time written by the major American drama critic of his time.

Terence Donovan Fashionby: Hillman, David (Editor)

Terence Donovan Fashion
by: Hillman, David (Editor)

Hardcover. London, Art / Books Publishing, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 240 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, like new in publishers shrink-wrap. A tight copy. Terence Donovan was one of the foremost photographers of his generation--among the greatest Britain has ever produced. He came to prominence in London as part of a postwar renaissance in art, fashion, graphic design and photography, and--alongside David Bailey and Brian Duffy (photographers of a similar working-class background)--he captured and helped create the Swinging London of the 1960s. Donovan socialized with celebrities and royalty, and found himself elevated to stardom in his own right, and yet, despite his success and status, there has never been a serious evaluation of Donovan's fashion work: he allowed no monographs to be published during his lifetime. Terence Donovan Fashion is therefore the first publication of his fashion photographs. Arranged chronologically, and with an illuminating text by Robin Muir (ex-picture editor of Vogue), the book considers Donovan in the social and cultural context of his time, showing how his constant experimentation not only set him apart, but also influenced generations to come. Designed by former art director of Nova magazine and Pentagram partner David Hillman, and with images selected by Hillman, the artist's widow Diana Donovan and Grace Coddington, creative director of American Vogue, this volume is indisputably a landmark publication in the history of fashion photography.

"In the first few years of Terry and the Pirates, Milton Caniff invented the visual and textual language that defines the very vocabulary of all adventure and character-based comic art. It is the greatest adventure comic strip ever done--a genuine masterpiece of its artform."

Terry and the Pirates: The Master Collection Vol. 2: 1936 - The Burma Blues
by: Milton Caniff/Dean Mullaney (Editor)

Hardcover. Clover Press, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards. 11 X 14". Volume 2 of this landmark series-reproduced from Milton Caniff's personal set of color syndicate tabloid proofs-features the iconic 1936 daily and Sunday adventures, which continue their separate paths until the end of August when the stories-and cast of characters-are happily united once and for all. In the Sunday Saga, Pat and Cap'n Blaze have it out across a checker board! Then things get really hot when the Dragon Lady and her men lay siege to Blaze's encampment! A twist of fate puts Pat in charge of the Dragon Lady's forces, but they're mistaken for soldier-of-fortune pirates when the Chinese Army storms their position. It takes timely intervention from a surprising source to gain their freedom. Meanwhile, in the Daily Saga, fists fly when Terry, Connie, and Pat are taken prisoner by the insidious Captain Judas-and sparks fly when the boys have their first meeting with beautiful, blonde Burma! The famous strips from March 16-21 steamed up the national audience and became one of the most imitated sequences in comic strip history. Later, cat claws are unsheathed against the backdrop of plague on the planation run by Stan and Wendy Wingate, Burma takes a dive, and with the daily and Sunday strips integrated into a unified storyline the boys once again confront the Dragon Lady before running afoul (accent on the foul!) of Papa Pyzon.

Texas By the Tailby: Jim Thompson

Texas By the Tail
by: Jim Thompson

Softcover. NY, Little, Brown & Company, reprint, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 237 pages. Clean, unread copy. Originally published in paperback by Fawcett Gold Medal Books, February 1965. To everyone he's every played dice with, Mitch Corley seems like the luckiest guy around. But in truth, Corley's fast hands are the only gift fate's ever given him. He's never held down a steady job, and when it comes to women, his luck might just be the worst of all -- his girlfriend and partner-in-crime Red would double-cross him in a heartbeat if she knew just how short on cash they really were. And if Red ever finds out about the wife Corley neglected to mention, there's a good chance that Corley might not survive the night. At first, Mitch was sure Texas would be the perfect place for him and Red to run their game -- there are players in nearly every back room and side-street across the state and here, the pockets run just a little deeper. But Corley forgot about one thing: Texans don't forgive easily. And there's nothing they hate more than a cheater. Texas by the Tail is a high-spirited, sexy, and ingeniously plotted novel of the grifting life, by a writer who is a virtual encyclopedia of the con, the scam, and the double cross.

Textiles of South-East Asiaby: Thompson, Angela

Textiles of South-East Asia
by: Thompson, Angela

Hardcover. Crowood Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 222 pages., color plates. This impressive work encompasses history, anthropology, and an expert exposition of textile arts from this region where textiles may denote group identity and may represent a large portion of a family's wealth. The author draws upon both published information and her own extensive travels in the area, describing practices and techniques that she observed in use in situ. She illustrates cultural and historical patterns in costume, often with the aid of temple paintings, sculpture, and historic photographs to supplement current images. Her descriptions of techniques, for example of weaving, are admirably balanced -- detailed enough to inform while presented with sufficient general information for a non-specialist reader. The illustrative material is good, often her own or her son's photographs, that shows the labor-intensive processes and world-class skills as well as the resulting spectacular museum pieces.
