A BLOODY BUSINESSby: Dylan Struzan

A BLOODY BUSINESS
by: Dylan Struzan

Hardcover. London, Hard Case Crime, 1st , 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, colorful dust jacket with a retro-style illustration by the author. In 1919, the National Prohibition Act was passed, making it illegal across America to produce, distribute, or sell liquor. With this act, the U.S. Congress also created organized crime as we know it. Italian, Jewish, and Irish mobs sprang up to supply the suddenly illegal commodity to the millions of people still eager to drink it. Men like Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, Dutch Schultz and Bugsy Siegel, Al Capone in Chicago and Nucky Johnson in Atlantic City, waged a brutal war for power in the streets and on the waterfronts. But if you think you already know this story...think again, since you've never seen it through the eyes of one the mobsters who lived it. Called "one of the most significant organized crime figures in the United States" by the U.S. District Attorney, Vincent "Jimmy Blue Eyes" Alo was just 15 years old when Prohibition became law. Over the next decade, Alo would work side by side with Lansky and Luciano as they navigated the brutal underworld of bootlegging, thievery and murder. Alo's later career included prison time and the ultimate Mob tribute: being immortalized as "Johnny Ola" in The Godfather, Part II. Introduced to the 91-year-old Alo living in retirement in Florida, Dylan Struzan based this book on more than 50 hours of recorded testimony--stories Alo had never shared, and that he forbid her to publish until "after I'm gone." Alo died, peacefully, two months short of his 97th birthday. And now his stories--bracing and violent, full of intrigue and betrayal, hunger and hubris--can finally be told. With cover art and 24 interior illustrations by Drew Struzan, one of the most acclaimed movie poster painters of all time. Small remainder dot bottom edge, otherwise like new.

A Chronicle of Gods and Sovereigns
by: Shotoki Jinno of Kitabatake Chikafusa translated H. Paul Verley

Hardcover. NY, Columbia University, 1st, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, lightly worn dust jacket, 300 pages. Book from 1980, being one of the most influential works of Japanese history and political theory. With its glorification of Japan's system of imperial succession, the author's 14th century tract became the catechism of loyalty to the throne for generations of Japanese. Beginning with recounting of Japan's divine origins, it tells of the early deities who ruled before heaven and earth were separated. Then the lives of the human sovereigns are chronicled who ruled over Japan in the 21 centuries following the founding of the empire in the year 606 BC. This first complete English translation of this landmark work gives an extensive introduction placing the chronicle in the context of 14th century Japan and exploring its powerful legacy of Japan before the Tokugawa period. A Common Destiny: A Photographic Journey Through a Changing World
by: Cedric Delsaux (Photographer), Bill McKibben (Introduction), James Lovelock (Contributor)

Hardcover. Monacelli Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 216 pages. An artful photographic voyage documenting the impact of modern industry and consumerism on our planet, A Common Destiny presents a hauntingly beautiful vision of a world perched on the edge of an abyss. Juxtaposing images of pristine wilderness with photos of mines, abandoned nuclear reactors, large industrial farms, and spaces that exemplify artificiality and our increasing distance from nature--such as indoor ski slopes in Dubai, large-scale suburban housing development sites, and lavish casinos--Cedric Delsaux creates a powerful meditation on our ruthless hunger for mass production and energy.

A Critical Introduction to Khomeiniby: Arshin Adib-Moghaddam

A Critical Introduction to Khomeini
by: Arshin Adib-Moghaddam

Hardcover. NY, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 318 pages. As the architect of the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini remains one of the most inspirational and enigmatic figures of the twentieth century. The revolution placed Iran at the forefront of Middle East politics and of the Islamic revival. Twenty years after his death, Khomeini is revered as a spiritual and political figurehead in Iran and in large swathes of the Islamic world, while in the West he is remembered by many as a dictator and as the instigator of Islamist confrontation. Arshin Adib-Moghaddam brings together both distinguished and emerging scholars in this comprehensive volume, which covers all aspects of Khomeini's life and critically examines Khomeini the politician, the philosopher, and the spiritual leader. The book details Khomeini's early years in exile from Iran, the revolution itself, and events that took place thereafter including the hostage crisis and the Iran-Iraq war. Lastly, the book considers his legacy in Iran - where Khomeini's image has been used by both reformist and conservative politicians to develop their own agendas - and further afield in other parts of the Islamic world and in the West. Written by scholars from varying disciplinary backgrounds, the book will prove invaluable to students and general readers interested in the life and times of Khomeini and the politics of Islam that he inspired.

A Dangerous Woman: American Beauty, Noted Philanthropist, Nazi Collaborator - The Life of Florence Gould by: Susan Ronald

A Dangerous Woman: American Beauty, Noted Philanthropist, Nazi Collaborator - The Life of Florence Gould
by: Susan Ronald

Hardcover. NY, St. Martin's Press, 2nd pr., 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 388 pages, b&w illustrations. A revealing biography of Florence Gould, fabulously wealthy socialite and patron of the arts, who hid a dark past as a Nazi collaborator in 1940's Paris. Born in turn-of-the-century San Francisco to French parents, Florence moved to Paris at the age of eleven. Believing that only money brought respectability and happiness, she became the third wife of Frank Jay Gould, son of the railway millionaire Jay Gould. She guided Frank's millions into hotels and casinos, creating a luxury hotel and casino empire. She entertained Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, Joseph Kennedy, and many Hollywood stars-like Charlie Chaplin, who became her lover. While the party ended for most Americans after the Crash of 1929, Frank and Florence stayed on, fearing retribution by the IRS. During the Occupation, Florence took several German lovers and hosted a controversial Nazi salon. As the Allies closed in, the unscrupulous Florence became embroiled in a notorious money laundering operation for Hermann Goring's Aerobank. Yet after the war, not only did she avoid prosecution, but her vast fortune bought her respectability as a significant contributor to the Metropolitan Museum and New York University, among many others. It also earned her friends like Estee Lauder who obligingly looked the other way. A seductive and utterly amoral woman who loved to say "money doesn't care who owns it," Florence's life proved a strong argument that perhaps money can buy happiness after all.

A Dissertation on Matter and Spirit (18th & 19th Century Works)by: Jackson, John

A Dissertation on Matter and Spirit (18th & 19th Century Works)
by: Jackson, John

Hardcover. Thoemmes Press, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, dark blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 56 pages. A facsimile reprint of a pamphlet originally published in 1735 in London. Introduction by John Yolton. Although not a particularly well-known figure in the history of philosophy, the importance of Jackson's work as representative of some of the major controversies in the first half of the 18th century should not be overlooked. With the dualism of matter and spirit firmly established, many thinkers struggled for an explanation of mind/body interaction. In "A Dissertation on Matter and Spirit" Jackson attacks the argument that God is the only genuine cause of the influence of matter on mind, and is significantly swayed by Locke's belief in thinking matter. However, as might be expected of a clergyman, he maintains that matter and spirit are essentially different, but continually qualifies this as based only on conjecture. Clearly examining the key elements involved, this pamphlet is a significant contribution to the materialism-immaterialism debate. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

A Dutch Family in the Middle Colonies, 1660-1800 by: Fabend, Firth

A Dutch Family in the Middle Colonies, 1660-1800
by: Fabend, Firth

Hardcover. New Brunswick, Rutgers University Press, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket, 326 pages. Firth Haring Fabend has studied a large colonial American family over five generations. The Haring family settled in the Hackensack Valley (on the New York/New Jersey border), where they lived, prospered, and remained throughout the eighteenth century. Fabend looks at how this ordinary family of independent, middle-class farmers coped with immigration, established themselves in a community, acquired land and capital, and took part in the social, political, economic, and religious changes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As she traces the lives of the Harings and their neighbors, Fabend focuses on their marriage and childbearing patterns, living conditions, agricultural methods, and relative economic position. She investigates inheritance patterns, concluding that the position of women deteriorated under English law. She is equally interested in the political and religious life of the family. A Great Place to Dieby: Connolly, Sean

A Great Place to Die
by: Connolly, Sean

Hardcover. Hanover NH, University Press of New England, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 161 pages. Carousing at the Black Dog Inn, Charles recounts to a friend the recent events of his life - "an endless soap opera" now centered on his chance meeting with hitchhiker William Cutshall, who weaves a tale of intrigue about his attempt to find his missing son. Connolly structures this novel as a kind of My Dinner with Andre, a nonstop conversation during which Charlie spins the tale of William Cutshall and Garth interrupts with observations, questions, and rebuttals. Surreal and darkly comic, A Great Place to Die can overwhelm at times, but Sean Connolly's faultless prose and offbeat characters keep things moving along until the end.

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 288 pages. This substantial and unusual volume is not an encyclopedic summary of names, dates, and images but a roughly chronological series of scholarly, sometimes provocative essays by specialists in various aspects of the medium's history. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914by: Marcella D. Genz

A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914
by: Marcella D. Genz

Hardcover. New Castle DE, Oak Knoll, 1st, 2004, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is a full and exceptionally well-researched account of the Press. It begins with a brief survey of Lucien Pissarro's early career in France in order to establish the influences and motivations for his book designs and proceeds to examine Lucien's association with Charles Ricketts, the establishment of the Eragny Press, and the Press' relationship to the publishers Hacon & Ricketts. Eragny was not a commercial publisher, yet profits was an important motivation for the Pissarros. Included here is the first major account for a private press of the costs of production, profits, and marketing and distribution practices. Eragny Press books were promoted and sold in England, the Continent, and the United States. Two of the Eragny Press books were the results of commissions from French bibliophile clubs. This history of the Eragny Press includes a discussion of the influences and artistic theories that are the basis for the Pissarros' books and provides a critical reassessment of their significance within the history of the English Arts and Crafts Private Press movement. About half the book is devoted to an exhaustive and detailed bibliography of all the Eragny Press publications, with critical commentary on each. Accompanying the text and the descriptive bibliography are more than seventy-five reproductions of rare Eragny wood engravings ( by Lucien Pissarro, T. Sturge Moore, and others), title pages, borders and decorated initials, binding papers, and book covers. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is an important book for anyone interested in the history of printing, the Arts and Crafts movement, Impressionism, private presses, the art of wood engraving, and illustrated and fine books.

A is for Archive: Warhol

A is for Archive: Warhol

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) remains an icon of the 20th century and a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. He also was an obsessive collector of things large and small, ordinary and quirky. Since 1994, The Andy Warhol Museum has studied and safeguarded the artist's archive encompassing hundreds of thousands of these objects, at turns strange, amusing, and poignant. From this array, many of these items have been researched and described in this book for the first time. For the myriad fans of Warhol and his quixotic world, as well as those who never understood the artist before, this volume is essential and unforgettable. Written by Matt Wrbican, the foremost authority on Warhol's personal collection, A is for Archive features curated selections from this collection, shedding light on the artist's work and motivations, as well as on his personality and private life. The volume is organized alphabetically, honoring Warhol's own use of a whimsical alphabetical structure: "A is for Autograph" (a selection of signed objects, many of which influenced his most popular works), "F is for Fashion" (featuring his collections of cowboy boots, neckties, and jackets), "S is for Stamp" (works of art by Warhol and others relating to stamps and mailed items), and "Z is for Zombie" (a grouping of photographs and ephemera of Warhol in various disguises: drag, robot, zombie, clown). The book also features an insightful essay by renowned art critic and Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik.
